BUSINESS BEAT Goodbye Georgetown, Hello Senate - Plus a Few Tidbits

Georgetown Sports Pub 2005 – 2017

As many of you are aware, we will be ending operations on Thursday evening, June 8. To everything there is a season, and our time to retire is now. This is our founder Mike’s birthday. It has been an honour to participate in, and contribute to, the community of Old Ottawa South. Thanks for the many, many memories over nearly 12 years. We will miss you all. ARTS AND CULTURE Seventeen Voyces Enchants with Venus and Adonis, with a Little Help from Makin’ Moves Children’s Dance Theatre By Matt House

On Friday and Saturday, May 26th and 27th, the Ottawa’s own Seventeen Voyces chamber choral ensemble enchanted Old Ottawa South audiences with a performance of the baroque opera “Venus and Adonis”. They were accompanied by the Ottawa Baroque Consort, and joined by some very special (and excited) collaborators: Old Ottawa South’s very own Makin’ Moves Children’s Dance Theatre. Since 1997, Seventeen Voyces has been performing choral music in Ottawa under the direction of Kevin Reeves. “Venus and Adonis”, an opera by Dr. John Blow originally presented around 1683, is typical of the “hidden musical gems” that the ensemble focuses on. For this performance, Seventeen Voyces was joined by three young, rising, professional opera singers in the lead roles, and accompanied the Ottawa Baroque Consort, a professional baroque orchestra who perform a regular concert series in Ottawa on period instruments. But the opera also needed dancers. As luck would have it, PHOTO BY MICHELLE MCKERNAN Kevin Reeves had read about a Makin’ Moves Children’s Dance singing in such a soaring falsetto, We are truly lucky to have the Theatre performance in this very in a live performance. Windsor Park is in For a Fool-ishly Good Summer The Fools strive to make theatre accessible to all by condensing the famous plays into 90 minute performances, engaging and interacting with their audience, and creating a fun and energetic environment for theatre goers of all ages. They also operate on a pass the hat payment system, which opens up the experience to everyone. A typical show can have anywhere between three and ten professional actors playing an array of characters, which makes for a hilarious, fast-paced, highly physical show. Behind the scenes is a group of seasoned designers, and production hands that bring Shakespeare’s vision to life with elaborate costumes, set design and direction. This year’s production is A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Mary Ellis. Set in a mystical forest, it tells the tale of young love, and what happens when the person you love loves someone else. Combined with Victorian era influences, Kings, Queens and fairies, the production promises to transport you to another world. Kerry Kaiser, Coordinator at the Centretown Emergency Food Centre.

PHOTOS BY ERIN FELAK Interview by Kristine Burr

Tell us a bit about the Food Centre’s operation. The Centre began in 1978 as a short-term project! Unfortunately, we still have a job to do. We serve those in need in the Centretown area bordered by Wellington Street on the north, Billings Bridge to the south, Lyon Street to the west and Main Street, including Lees Avenue, to the east. While the nature of our clientele has shifted over the years as the demographics of our catchment area have changed, demand for food from people living on social assistance, with disabilities and in low-income jobs has remained throughout the years and, in recent years, has started to grow again.

And what about you – why do you do this? I have been working at the Centretown Emergency Food Centre for over 30 years and I feel honoured to work with the volunteers and the clients. Every day I see miracles and watch the volunteers make a positive impact in someone’s life. Every month, we offer our clients a three-to-four day food supply, depending on their family size.

Tell us about your volunteers. We are very lucky that most of our volunteers have been here long term and when we recruit new volunteers, we ask our member churches first and they usually fill the void but we have volunteers from all walks of life and all ages. We have students, retired individuals, stay-at-home moms, people who do shift work, government employees on volunteer days, and volunteers recruiting their neighbours (including a number who live in Old Ottawa South). As with everything else in the Centre, when we have a need, it seems to fill itself.

And what about your clients? In the past few years we have seen an increase in working poor families and a large jump in parents with children accessing our services. We serve all of our neighbours who are in need, including new Canadians, the old and the young, people on benefits, those who have mental and physical challenges, people who have just lost their jobs, seasonal workers and those in the three emergency shelters in our catchment area.

Where do you get your support? We get our support from the Centretown Church Social Action Committee (CCSAC), member churches, the City of Ottawa, the Ottawa Food Bank, local schools and businesses and individuals. Our local grocery stores support us by allowing our volunteers to do several food drives on their premises each year, and they were all active as sponsors for last year’s walk-a-thon.
