COASTER Fact Sheet (March 2021) Fact Sheet What is the COASTER? The COASTER began in 1995 as a means of added connectivity within San Diego County providing train service north and south between Oceanside and downtown San Diego. More than 125 trains operate each week taking passengers along the coastal corridor. How much does it cost? Quick Facts The fare varies depending on the number of zones traveled. Regular one-way fares begin at $5.00. Senior/Disabled/Medicare* and youth+ fares begin Previous Name at $2.50, and children ages five and under ride free. Monthly passes are COAST Express Rail available for regular passengers ($140.00 to $182.00, depending on zones traveled), youth ($58.00), and Senior/Disabled/Medicare ($58.00). First Day of Service February 27, 1995 * Senior = 65+ (Customers who turn 60 prior to September 1, 2019 will remain eligible for the reduced fare) + Youth = Ages 6 through 18 (5 & under ride free) Annual Ridership 1.4 Million for FY19 Why should I ride it? • The COASTER is an alternative to congested highways. Average Weekday Ridership • COASTER passengers have increased mobility through access to Amtrak, 4,886 for FY19 Metrolink, BREEZE buses, SPRINTER trains, San Diego MTS buses, Length of Route and the San Diego Trolley. 41 Miles • The COASTER improves air quality by reducing the number of vehicles on roadways. Number of Stations • COASTER connects passengers to popular tourist and 8 commuter destinations such as Sorrento Valley, Santa Fe Depot and the San Diego International Airport. Equipment • The Guaranteed Ride Home Program is available to regular 7 Locomotives and commuters.     UNECE Tram and Metro Statistics Metadata Introduction This file gives detailed country notes on the UNECE tram and metro statistics dataset. These metadata describe how countries have compiled tram and metro statistics, what the data cover, and where possible how passenger numbers and passenger-km have been determined. Whether data are based on ticket sales, on-board sensors or another method may well affect the comparability of passenger numbers across systems and countries, hence it being documented here. Most of the data are at the system level, allowing comparisons across cities and systems. However, not every country could provide this, sometimes due to confidentiality reasons. In these cases, sometimes either a regional figure (e.g. the Provinces of Canada, which mix tram and metro figures with bus and ferry numbers) or a national figure (e.g. Czechia trams, which excludes the Prague tram system) have been given to maximise the utility of the dataset. File Structure The disseminated file is structured into seven different columns, as follows: Countrycode: These are United Nations standard country codes for statistical use, based on M49. The codes together with the country names, region and other information are given here https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/overview/ (and can be downloaded as a CSV directly here https://unstats.un.org/unsd/methodology/m49/overview/#). BACKGROUND The North County Transit District (NCTD) holds safety as its highest priority in the INFORMATION: provision and operation of public transit services throughout its service area. NCTD takes every opportunity to incorporate the fundamental principles of safety in all of its operational plans, procedures, and processes. NCTD also takes steps to proactively communicate the concept of public safety awareness and education near and at its rail grade crossings and rail right-of-way to members of the communities it serves. This is done through public outreach and educational efforts throughout the year. According to statistics kept by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and Operation Lifesaver, Incorporated (OLI), the State of California has been identified as having the highest number of preventable railroad trespasser fatalities of all states in the nation. There were 358 tragic rail incidents recorded statewide in 2016. From these rail incidents, there were 101 trespasser fatalities and 52 highway rail crossing fatalities. In an effort to reduce these tragedies, state legislators passed a bill in 2009 that designated September as "Rail Safety Month." Each year, passenger and freight rail operators team up to remind pedestrians and motorists to exercise caution when near tracks, to heed the warning signals when crossing railroad tracks, and to always "See Tracks, Think Trains". NCTD is affirming its commitment to safety and saving lives through the prevention of needless tragedy by this proclamation recognizing September 2017 as State of California Rail Safety Month.

    SPRINTER Light Rail Project Before- and-After Study (2011) Oceanside, California Learn more: www.transit.dot.gov/before-and-after-studies SPRINTER Light Rail – Oceanside, California The North Coast Transit District’s (NCTD) 22-mile, 15-station SPRINTER light-rail line connects the cities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido via an alignment that parallels California State Route (SR) 78, the primary east-west corridor in northern San Diego County. Figure 2 is a map of the corridor and the project. Much of the alignment is a rehabilitated freight rail line that continues to serve freight traffic during overnight hours. Twelve of the stations have park-ride lots that provide a total of 1,755 spaces. The scope of the project also includes 12 diesel multiple unit (DMU) light-rail vehicles, a maintenance and storage facility for the rail vehicles, and centralized train control. Figure 2 SPRINTER Light Rail and Surrounding Areas Studies of passenger rail service in the SR 78 corridor began in 1978. During the 1980s, SPRINTER (known at the time as the Oceanside-Escondido Rail Project) was identified as part of a multimodal strategy to address traffic congestion and projected growth in population and employment in the SR 78 corridor. In 1987, San Diego County voters approved Proposition A, a half-cent sales tax dedicated to local transportation projects, including SPRINTER. The “before” conditions for the Before-and-After Study are from 2003, while the “after” conditions are from 2010. The San Diego Association of Governments prepared the Before-and- After Study for the project. Project Scope: Broadly, SPRINTER was built largely as conceptualized in the advanced planning: a DMU-based light rail service along the rehabilitated freight corridor.
