They are neither brown dwarfs nor planets. In this paper, their nomenclature, history of discovery, sites of detection, formation mechanisms, and future directions of research are reviewed. Most free-floating, non-deuterium-burning, substellar objects share the same formation mechanism as low-mass stars and brown dwarfs, but there are still a few caveats, such as the value of the opacity mass limit, the minimum mass at which an isolated body can form via turbulent fragmentation from a cloud. The least massive free-floating substellar objects found to date have masses of about 0.004 Msol, but current and future surveys should aim at breaking this record. Urton‟s research findings allow us to visualize the information in the pairing quadrants, which are determined by the distribution of S- and Z-knots, to provide overall information that is helpful for identifying the celestial coordinates of the brightest stars in the Pleiades cluster. In the present study, the linear regression attempts to model the relationship between two variables (which are determined by the distribution of the S- and Z-knots). The scatter plot illustrates the results of our simple linear regression: suggesting a map of the Pleiades represented by seven points on the Cartesian coordinate plane. -

2011 Peeling the Onion & Binocular Asterisms
The Eldorado Star Party 2011 Binocular and Telescope Observing Clubs by Blackie Bolduc San Antonio Astronomical Association Purpose and Rules Welcome to the Annual ESP Binocular and Telescope Clubs! Their purpose is to give you the opportunity to observe some Fall showcase objects under the pristine Southwest Texas skies, thus displaying them to their best advantage. Binocular Club. In response to many requests for “something different”, you are offered the opportunity to chase down some lovely asterisms. There is a listing of twenty-five objects, all observable with binoculars of modest dimension. While the location center of mass of each object is specified, some imagination on your part will be required in order to “see” the figure suggested. Most will pop out easily, but others may be elusive. If you get stumped, you can always consult the “cheat sheets” posted in the registration/warming tent on the observing field. You need only observe any 15, your choice. Telescope Club. Since most of the readily accessible objects have already been included in one or more of the annual listings since this Party got underway in 2004, it is time to try to spice up our challenges. This year we offer “Peeling the Onion”: beginning with a relatively easy to identify major object, then turning to a sub-object just a bit harder, and on to another sub-sub-object ... peeling them off one at a time. There are five major groups, with on “onion” at the head of each, and six to eleven “peels” in close order behind. Of a total of forty objects, you need only “find” 25, your choice. -

Physics 10263 Lab #3: The Pleiades Introduction In the constellation Taurus, a familiar sight in the evening sky during the spring, there is a small asterism known as “The Pleiades”, which marks the location of a cluster of stars. In legend, the Pleiades are the seven sisters, daughters of Atlas, the titan who holds up the sky, and the Oceanid named Pleione. The sisters are Alcyone, Maia, Electra, Taygeta, Celaeno, Merope and Asterope. The great hunter known as Orion fell in love with them and chases them across the sky as they ride on the back of Taurus the bull. Today there are only six stars in the Pleiades that are easily visible to the naked eye. There are many theories about what happened to the 7th one. Celaeno has often been called the “Lost Pleiad” because she was hit by lightning according to Greek mythology. In reality, the star we call Celaeno is just at the limit of human vision in terms of brightness. In today’s lab, we’ll take a closer look at this small cluster of stars with the help of some observational data collected by astronomers at Kitt Peak National Observatory. !17 From lecture, you may be familiar with the equation that relates the apparent luminosity and absolute luminosity of a star. This relationship is known as the inverse square law: 100 - L app = 2 L abs X r ! where “r” is the distance to the star (in parsecs) and “X” is the reduction factor that accounts for the extinction and reddening of starlight due to the intervening interstellar medium. -

Very faint echoes of the alternative history can be found in the mythology surrounding the Pleiades, especially regarding Merope. The Pleiades In mythology, the Pleiades were the seven daughters of the titan Atlas and the sea-nymph Pleione, and were born on Mount Cyllene. They are the siblingss of Calypso, Hyas, the Hyades, and the Hesperides. The Pleiades were nymphs in the train of Artemis, and together with the seven Hyades were called the Atlantides, Dodonides, or Nysiades, nursemaids and teachers to the infant Bacchus. The Seven Sisters 1) Maia , eldest of the seven Pleiades, was mother of Hermes by Zeus and Iris by Thaumas. 2) Electra was mother of Dardanus and Iasion by Zeus. 3) Taygete was mother of Lacedaemon, also by Zeus. 4) Alcyone was mother of Hyrieus by Poseidon. 5) Celaeno was mother of Lycus and Eurypylus by Poseidon. 6) Sterope (also Asterope) was mother of Oenomaus by Ares. 7) Merope , youngest of the seven Pleiades, was wooed by Orion. In other mythic contexts she married Sisyphus and, becoming mortal, she faded away. She bore to Sisyphus several sons. How Did The Seven Sisters Become Stars? The Seven Sisters received their "Catasterismi" (placement among the stars) when they all committed suicide because they were "so saddened" by either the fate of their father, Atlas, or the loss of their siblings, the Hyades (also daughters of Zeus). -

Your Guide to the CONSTELLATIONS INSTRUCTOR'S HANDBOOK Lowell L. Koontz 2002 ii Preface We Earthlings are far more aware of the surroundings at our feet than we are in the heavens above. The study of observational astronomy and locating someone who has expertise in this field has become a rare find. The ancient civilizations had a keen interest in their skies and used the heavens as a navigational tool and as a form of entertainment associating mythology and stories about the constellations. Constellations were derived from mankind's attempt to bring order to the chaos of stars above them. They also realized the celestial objects of the night sky were beyond the control of mankind and associated the heavens with religion. Observational astronomy and familiarity with the night sky today is limited for the following reasons: • Many people live in cities and metropolitan areas have become so well illuminated that light pollution has become a real problem in observing the night sky. • Typical city lighting prevents one from seeing stars that are of fourth, fifth, sixth magnitude thus only a couple hundred stars will be seen. • Under dark skies this number may be as high as 2,500 stars and many of these dim stars helped form the patterns of the constellations. • Light pollution is accountable for reducing the appeal of the night sky and loss of interest by many young people as the night sky is seldom seen in its full splendor. • People spend less time outside than in the past, particularly at night. • Our culture has developed such a profusion of electronic devices that we find less time to do other endeavors in the great outdoors.
