Project #3: Inspired by… - Description Critique Date - 3/29/19 (Fri) "The world is filled to suffocating. Man has placed his token on every stone. Every word, every image, is leased and mortgaged. We know that a picture is but a space in which a variety of images, none of them original, blend and clash." – Sherrie Levine Conceptual Requirements: In this project, you will do your best to interpret the style of a particular photographer who interests you. You will research them as well as their work in order to make photographs that have a signature aesthetic or approach that is specific to them, and also contribute your ideas. Technical Requirements: 1. Start with the list on the back of this page (the Project Description sheet), and start web searches for these photographers. All the ones listed are masters in their own right and a good starting point for you to begin your search. Select one and confirm your choice with me by the due date (see the syllabus). 2. After choosing a photographer, go on the web and to the library to check out books on them, read interviews, and look at every image you can that is made by them. Learn as much as you can and take notes on your sources. 3. Type your name, date, and “Project 3: Inspired by...” at the top of a Letter sized page. Then write a 2 page research paper on your chosen photographer. Be sure to include information such as where and when they were born, where it is that they did their work, what kind of camera and film formats they used, their own personal history, etc. -

Abstract The aim of my research is to demonstrate how a practice of hand made books based on the materiality of the photographic print and photo-reprography, could engage with notions of touch in the digital age. We take for granted that most artists’ books are made from paper using lithography and bound in the codex form, yet this technology has served neither producer nor reader well. As Hayles (2002:22) observed: We are not generally accustomed to thinking about the book as a material metaphor, but in fact it is an artifact whose physical properties and historical usage structure our interactions with it in ways obvious and subtle. -

From 14 May to 20 Octobe r 2019 For its twelfth contemporary art event, the Palace of Versailles invites 5 photographers from around the world to the Estate of Trianon, from 14 May 2019 to 20 October 2019. The next contemporary art exhibition at Versailles will be held in the intimate setting of Trianon. For the 2019 event, Dove Allouche, Nan Goldin, Martin Parr, Eric Poitevin and Viviane Sassen unveil new commission that echo the spirit of the venue. Their works, which combines creation and heritage, reveal a new Versailles. For the first time, the Château of Versailles has commissioned artists to produce new works. In this instance, images that condense and pare down their thoughts on this elusive place. Nearly two hundred years after its invention, photography and its new techniques make Versailles itself as “new” a subject now as it was at the turn of the 20th century. -

Alec Soth’s Journey: Materiality and Time Emily Elizabeth Greer Introduction The photographer Alec Soth is known for series of images and publications that encapsulate his travels through time and place within the American landscape. Each grouping of photographs uses a specific medium and geographical orientation in order to explore unique journeys and themes, such as the loneliness and banality of strangers in a public park, religion and debauchery in the Mississippi Delta, and the isolation of hermits in the valleys of rural Montana. Yet how are we to understand the place of these smaller journeys within Soth’s larger artistic career? How are these publications and series connected to one another, and how do they evolve and change? Here, I will consider these questions as they relate to the specific materials within Soth’s work. Using material properties as a framework illuminates the way in which each series illustrates these specific themes, and also how each grouping of images holds a significant place within the artist’s larger photographic oeuvre. Throughout Alec Soth’s career, his movement between mediums has evolved in a manner that mirrors the progression of themes and subject matter within his larger body of work as a whole. From his earliest photographic forays in black and white film to his most recent digital video projects, Soth creates images that depict a meandering passage through time and place.1 His portraits, still lifes, and landscapes work together to suggest what one might call a stream of conscious wandering. The chronological progression of materiality in his works, from early black and white photography to large format 8x10 color images to more recent explorations in digital photography and film, illuminates the way in which each medium is used to tell a story of temporality and loneliness within the American landscape. -

David Seaton – showed us his own work photographing air force jets which were components of his LRPS and ARPS panels and explained how he got hooked to this genre of photography 2. Andrew Wood – with memories of the moon landing and role of Kodak film 3. Jeff Poole showed a couple of images from a book ’Remembering Cheetahs’ by Wildlife Photographers Union part of a series of fundraising books for conservation https://rememberingwildlife.com/remembering-cheetahs/ 4. Will Ikins presented a postcard from Mallorca (Caves of Drach I think) with memories of happy times and holidays 5. Tony Capper presented some famous Hollywood portraits and explored the history of glamour photography with famous photographers and how and why the Hollywood styles and techniques developed. 6. Lesley Moran brought an image of her treasured print ‘El Capitan’ by Ansel Adams which explains her love of landscape photography. Juliet Collins presented a photograph by Saul Leiter – perhaps a less well known American street photographer (and painter), now in his 80’s, famous for compressing images by using long focal length lenses. Juliet felt that his photographs displayed the painter’s eye with use of colour and composition. I found some of his interesting quotes – Juliet ‘Perfection is not something I admire. -

We’ve decided to look backwards and forwards. We’ve included an article about our past and some of the magazine we have handled over the years. To the right is a picture of where it all started. Central Books continues to be Europe’s largest distributor of magazines to the book trade, galleries and other specialist outlets. Central Books have been handling magazines since we were established in 1939 and we’re delighted to note that Indie magazines and print are thriving, We – and our colleagues at Antenne Books - hope to continue bringing something different to your shelves for many years to come.
