Agonimia Opuntiella
Pertusaria scutellifera is a New Zealand endemic corticolous on several species of Dracophyllum and Nothofagus. Its asci are one-spored, and its spores can reach more than 180 µm in length. The photomicrograph on the cover looks like a differential interference image, but in fact was produced simply by sliding a piece of opaque paper partway across the condenser lens of the microscope to generate shadows. Graeme Gillespie 23 February 2010 Qualifications and Experience Please see my curriculum vitae (Appendix I) for my general qualifications and experience. My Ph.D. in zoology focussed specifically on the conservation biology and ecology of frog species in south-eastern Australia. I have 23 years of field and scientific experience studying amphibians and their conservation and management in south- eastern Australia. I have published 24 refereed scientific papers and 38 technical reports on amphibian ecology, conservation and management. I am recognised throughout Australia as an authority on the frog fauna of Victoria, specifically with respect to conservation issues, and I am regularly asked to provide advice on such matters to individuals, government conservation and land management agencies, and non-government organisations. With regard to the Giant Burrowing Frog, I encountered this species on several occasions between 1986 and 1992 while undertaking and supervising pre-logging biodiversity surveys in East Gippsland, Victoria. These records are documented in the Victorian Wildlife Atlas. During this period, I gained knowledge of the species’ habitat associations, breeding biology, some aspects of its behaviour and an appreciation of its conservation status in Victoria (see Opie et al. 1990; Westaway et al.1990; Lobert et al. 1991). Because of my research into amphibian conservation and management, I am highly familiar with the existing literature on the impact of various forest management activities on amphibians and the implications of these activities for amphibian conservation. -

The disappearing native mammals of northern Australia 1 SUMMARY Since European settlement, the deepest loss of Australian biodiversity has been the spate of extinctions of endemic mammals. Historically, these losses occurred mostly in inland and in temperate parts of the country, and largely between 1890 and 1950. A new wave of extinctions is now threatening Australian mammals, this time in northern Australia. Many mammal species are in sharp decline across the north, even in extensive natural areas managed primarily for conservation. The main evidence of this decline comes consistently from two contrasting sources: robust scientifi c monitoring programs and more broad-scale Indigenous knowledge. The main drivers of the mammal decline in northern Australia include inappropriate fi re regimes (too much fi re) and predation by feral cats. Cane Toads are also implicated, particularly to the recent catastrophic decline of the Northern Quoll. Furthermore, some impacts are due to vegetation changes associated with the pastoral industry. Disease could also be a factor, but to date there is little evidence for or against it. Based on current trends, many native mammals will become extinct in northern Australia in the next 10-20 years, and even the largest and most iconic national parks in northern Australia will lose native mammal species. This problem needs to be solved. The fi rst step towards a solution is to recognise the problem, and this publication seeks to alert the Australian community and decision makers to this urgent issue. -

Easy Reference Sheet Caring for Gliders Version: January 2021 There are six species of gliders in Australia, five of which can be found in South-east Queensland. Australian gliders range in size (head and body) from 6.5 - 8cm long (Feathertail Gliders) to 35 - 45cm (Greater Glider). All Australian gliders are nocturnal. Most species have a highly specialised diet, comprising some or all of the following: nectar, pollen, insects, the sap of certain eucalypts and the gum from acacias. However the Greater Glider has a diet similar to the koala, eating only the foliage of certain species of eucalypt. Do I need a Permit to care for gliders? Yes. You will need a REHABILITATION PERMIT to care for gliders. A Rehabilitation Permit can be obtained from a licensed wildlife care group such as Wildcare. Remember all Australian native wildlife is protected in Queensland. You cannot keep them without an appropriate Permit. Do I have to do any training to care for gliders? Yes. Gliders have highly specialised dietary and housing requirements. They often come into care due to loss of habitat, injury or as a result of being orphaned. You must have a good understanding of their biology, be able to recognise signs of illness and injury and be able to provide emergency care to them. In Wildcare, you will need to complete the following training workshops in order to care for gliders:- • Orientation – compulsory for all members • Rescue and First Aid for Wildlife (Basic) – compulsory for all members • Caring for Orphaned Mammals • Gliders Is caring for gliders difficult? Caring for gliders is generally undertaken by experienced possum carers. -

Action Statement Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988 No. 128 Orbost Spiny Cray Euastacus diversus Description and distribution The Orbost Spiny Crayfish Euastacus diversus (Riek) is a small freshwater crayfish. Members of the genus Euastacus are distinguished by heavy claws or chelae and spiny appearance (Zeidler 1982). The Orbost Spiny Crayfish is distinguished from other Euastacus by the arrangement, number and location of various spines on the exoskeleton. In particular, the species is characterised by the presence of one or two marginal squamal spines, the absence of dorsal thoracic spines, telsonic surface spines or an abdominal boss, the presence of four mesal carpal spines on the claw and a maximum occipital carapace length of 32.2mm (Morgan 1986). The Orbost Spiny Crayfish is olive green in colour (A. Murray pers. obs.) and is one of the smallest species in the genus. Orbost Spiny Crayfish, Euastacus diversus (Approximately life size – © Illustration by Savina The Orbost Spiny Crayfish has one of the most Hopkins) restricted distributions of all Euastacus species, having been found at only seven locations on and around the Errinundra Plateau in East Gippsland. Thirteen individuals were collected from the type locality ‘30 miles north of Orbost’ by Riek in 1956 (Morgan 1986). The species was rediscovered in 1991 when a single specimen was collected in Ferntree Creek, followed in 1994 by records from two sites in Ellery Creek and one site in each of Jungle and Lilly-pilly Creeks, all in the headwaters of the Brodribb River. In 1995 a population was located in Yandown Creek, in the headwaters of the Queensborough River. -
