Hartmann2 1 European Southern Observatory, Karl-Schwarzschild-Strasse 2, 85748 Garching bei München, Germany e-mail: [email protected] 2 Thüringer Landessternwarte Tautenburg, Sternwarte 5, 07778 Tautenburg, Germany Received 22 January 2009 / Accepted 10 August 2009 ABSTRACT Context. 11 UMi and HD 32518 belong to a sample of 62 K giant stars that has been observed since February 2004 using the 2m Alfred Jensch telescope of the Thüringer Landessternwarte (TLS) to measure precise radial velocities (RVs). Aims. The aim of this survey is to investigate the dependence of planet formation on the mass of the host star by searching for plane- tary companions around intermediate-mass giants. Methods. An iodine absorption cell was used to obtain accurate RVs for this study. Results. Our measurements reveal that the RVs of 11 UMi show a periodic variation of 516.22 days with a semiamplitude of −1 −7 K = 189.70 m s . An orbital solution yields a mass function of f (m) = (3.608 ± 0.441) × 10 solar masses (M) and an eccentricity of e = 0.083 ± 0.03. The RV curve of HD 32518 shows sinusoidal variations with a period of 157.54 days and a semiamplitude of −1 −8 K = 115.83 m s . An orbital solution yields an eccentricity, e = 0.008 ± 0.03 and a mass function, f (m) = (2.199 ± 0.235) × 10 M. -

Accurate stellar parameters are needed in numerous domains of astrophysics. The position of stars on the Hertzsprung- Russell diagram is an important indication of their structure and evolution, and it helps improve stellar models. Furthermore, the age and mass of stars hosting planets are required elements for studying exoplanetary systems. Aims. We aim at determining accurate parameters of a set of 18 bright exoplanet host and potential host stars from interferometric measurements, photometry, and stellar models. Methods. Using the VEGA/CHARA interferometer operating in the visible domain, we measured the angular diameters of 18 stars, ten of which host exoplanets. We combined them with their distances to estimate their radii. -

Retired A Stars and Their Companions II: Jovian planets orbiting κ Coronae Borealis and HD 167042 1 John Asher Johnson2,3, Geoffrey W. Marcy3, Debra A. Fischer4, Jason T. Peek3 [email protected] ABSTRACT We report precise Doppler measurements of two stars, obtained at Lick Observatory as part of our search for planets orbiting intermediate–mass sub- giants. Periodic variations in the radial velocities of both stars reveal the presence of substellar orbital companions. These two stars are notably mas- sive with stellar masses of 1.80 M⊙ and 1.64 M⊙, respectively, indicating that they are former A–type dwarfs that have evolved off of the main sequence and are now K–type subgiants. The planet orbiting κ CrB has a minimum mass MP sin i = 1.8 MJup, eccentricity e =0.146 and a 1208 day period, corresponding to a semimajor axis a =2.7 AU. The planet around HD 167042 has a minimum mass MP sin i = 1.7 MJup and a 412.6 day orbit, corresponding to a semima- jor axis a = 1.3 AU. The eccentricity of HD 167042 b is consistent with circular (e =0.027 ± 0.04), adding to the rare class of known exoplanets in long–period, circular orbits similar to the Solar System gas giants. Like all of the planets pre- viously discovered around evolved A stars, κ CrBb and HD 167042b orbit beyond 0.8 AU.
