We've designed this media guide to assist you throughout the weekend, whether it be to reference historical data, information on this year's event or information and statistics on our six weekend races. Our three-day weekend is packed with activities on and off the track. In addition to the racing, two concerts will take place: on Friday night at 6:45 p.m., the Tecate Light Fiesta Friday concert will feature popular Mexican rock band "Moderatto," while on Saturday night, "SMG Presents Kings of Chaos Starring Billy Idol, Billy Gibbons and Chester Bennington" will entertain the Grand Prix crowd at the Rock-N-Roar Concert. The Lifestyle Expo, located in the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, will see more than 180,000 Grand Prix fans walk through multiple times. Our annual media luncheon takes place on Thursday, April 6, and will feature drivers from many of the racing series that will be here over the weekend. Not content to stay stagnate, our Club Racing program continues to evolve. In 2011, we began the BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour program. With the help of our partner, BFGoodrich Tires, the series expanded to nine events for 2012, and included one special event in each division. These race weekends featured elements that aren’t always available at National Races, adding to the competitors’ experi- ence. We also unveiled the Majors program in the middle part of the coun- try this season, giving racers in the Rocky Mountain, Midwest and Southwest Divisions an opportunity to run for a larger championship without having to travel the country.

And rightly so, because in its first and only experience of practicing together, which was during Carburetion Day’s final tune-up, the antique racing car, doddering racing driver, and butter- fingered crew successfully engineered ridiculous pit stops slower than two-thirds of the rest of the field of 33. Once the 500 started, the jittery old racing driver began performing to everybody’s worst expectations. First he barely escaped involvement in a big accident on the first corner of the opening lap. Next he fell a full lap behind – the worst thing that could have happened. And then, on his very first pit stop, his inexperienced crew did OK. Veterans, fancy cars, a flashy Uncle Sam, pretty girls -- like Miss Mendocino, Liberty Egloff, and Miss Redwood Empire Outstanding Teen, Brook Ingram -- the Ukiah High School band, G.I. moms, law enforcement vehicles and a fire truck, too, also made up the pro- cession which started on School Street and winded its way to the Ukiah Cemetery on Low Gap Road. Young spectators, many hold- ing small American flags -- courtesy of Uncle Sam -- could be seen darting into the street to gather candy when tossed to them by generous parade entrants. But sweet treats are not what drew the adults to the event.
