  • Middlebrow Cinematic Taste
4 TIME AND THE MIDDLEBROW IN 1940S BRITISH CINEMA Lawrence Napper In Ealing Studios’ popular wartime comedy Fiddlers Three (Watt 1944), Tommy Trinder, Sonnie Hale and Diana Decker are the victims of a cruel rupture in the otherwise linear structure of time. Caught in a storm on their way back from Navy leave, they take shelter under Stonehenge at midnight on Midsummer’s Eve. A confluence of cosmic forces results in their spectacular but unwilling transportation back to the time of the Roman Empire. However, for all the togas and centurions populating the scenes that follow, the social mores of Roman times seem curiously similar to those of wartime Britain. On spying a Roman legion, Trinder remarks that ‘it’s funny how you can’t get away from ENSA [Entertainments National Service Association]!’ The commanding centurion (James Robertson Justice) tells them they have no right to be in a ‘defence area’, and consequently they are shipped to Rome in a packing case stamped ‘British Druids: With Care’. The Empress (Francis Day) laments the fact that they will be victims of human sac- rifice, especially given the ‘manpower shortage’, although apparently Gladiators have been declared ‘a reserved occupation’. Trinder is able to divert the Roman court with an extended Carmen Miranda impression, and Nero (Francis Sullivan) upbraids his Empress for filling her bath with more than the regulation five inches of milk. Further variations of this gag form the leitmotif of the film which is, as Charles Barr complains, ‘repeated ad nauseum’ (1998, 196). Despite Barr’s crisp dismissal, I would argue that Fiddlers Three contains the germ of an idea about time that is surprisingly pervasive across a variety of cinematic, literary and theatrical texts produced in Britain during the mid-1940s, and which has particular significance for discussions of the ‘middlebrow’ in this period.

The direct cause of the war was the refusal of the Boers (Afrikaners) to offer political rights to the mainly British `Uitlander' immigrant workforce. The larger cause was British imperial ambitions in South Africa, rich in gold and diamonds. The Boers issued an ultimatum, then invaded Natal on 11 October 1899. The existing British forces were beaten back, and the invasion force under Sir Redvers Buller made a two-pronged attack, to the west along the border between Cape Colony and Orange Free State, and to the east in Natal attempting to relieve Ladysmith. Major reverses were suffered at Magersfontein, Colenso and Spion Kop, and the overall command was taken by Lord Roberts, who advanced from the south-west to take first Bloemfontein and then Pretoria (5 June 1900).

  • British National Cinema
British national cinema With films as diverse as Bhaji on the Beach, The Dam Busters, Mrs Miniver, Trainspotting, The Draughtsman's Contract, and Prick Up Your Ears, twentieth- century British cinema has produced wide-ranging notions of British culture, identity and nationhood. British National Cinema is a comprehensive introduction to the British film industry within an economic, political and social context. Describing the development of the British film industry, from the Lumière brothers’ first screening in London in 1896 through to the dominance of Hollywood and the severe financial crises which affected Goldcrest, Handmade Films and Palace Pictures in the late 1980s and 1990s, Sarah Street explores the relationship between British cinema and British society. Using the notions of ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ cinema, the author demonstrates how British cinema has been both ‘respectable’ and ‘disreputable’ according to the prevailing notions of what constitutes good cinema. British National Cinema analyses the politics of film and establishes the difficult context within which British producers and directors have worked. Sarah Street questions why British film-making, production and distribution have always been subject to government apathy and financial stringency. In a comparison of Britain and Hollywood, the author asks to what extent was there a 'star system' in Britain and what was its real historical and social function. An examination of genres associated with British film, such as Ealing comedies, Hammer horror and 'heritage' films, confirms the eclectic nature of British cinema. In a final evaluation of British film, she examines the existence of 'other cinemas': film-making which challenges the traditional concept of cinema and operates outside mainstream structures in order to deconstruct and replace classical styles and conventions.
