Goalie Retention and Recruiting CYHA GOALIE PROGRAM 7/28/2019 Registration Discount All CYHA goalies receive a discount off memberships at signup. Depending on the level, this discount ranges from 33% to 55% of registration fees. CYHA Supplied Goalie Equipment Goalie equipment will be supplied for all Mite/U8 levels. Extra available pads can be used by Squirt/U10 level goalies at no cost. Equipment Reimbursement CYHA understands the financial impact the goalie position can be and will help offset the cost of equipment for goalies. The reimbursement of equipment will vary based on the level of play. The figures listed below are equal to approximately half of the estimated cost of a full set of equipment for that level of play as determined by the CYHA Goalie Director and approved by the CYHA board. The breakdown is as follows. U16, Junior Gold, Bantam, U15 Will receive an equipment reimbursement of $1,300. Peewee, U12 Will receive an equipment reimbursement of $900. Squirt, U10 Will receive an equipment reimbursement of $425. Items will need to be purchased first, and then turn in the receipt for reimbursement. The reimbursements will only be made while the goalie is registered with CYHA during the current season, beginning when registration opens and ending March 31st. Any purchases made outside this window can be reimbursed once the player is registered for the upcoming season. Any reimbursement request that is over a year old will not be considered. The reimbursement amount listed above is the total amount for a two year period. Once two years is up the goalie will be eligible for reimbursement at the current level of play. Items covered by the reimbursement are: Goalie skates, leg pads, goalie breezers, protective cup, chest protector, glove and blocker, helmet, neck guard, stick and bag. CYHA will not reimburse for multiple quantities of the same item within the two year period. Example, 2 helmets or 2 sticks. All reimbursements will be submitted to, and reviewed by, the CYHA Goalie Director. Final approval will be made by the CYHA President. All reimbursements will be tracked and periodically reviewed by the CYHA Board. If a goalie has received reimbursement within the last 6 months and leaves CYHA to play elsewhere, CYHA reserves the right to collect the reimbursement back. If a goalie has received reimbursement and does not complete the season (excluding a season ending injury) in the goalie position, CYHA reserves the right to collect the reimbursement back. “Move in” goalies must register before they are eligible for reimbursement. No reimbursement for items prior to registration date. Reimbursement is only for CYHA goalies and not co-op goalies. .

COVID-19 RETURN TO PLAY PROTOCOLS & GUIDELINES We’re committed to providing the highest levels of safety for our community. To ensure player and staff safety, we have implemented mandatory 'Safe Return to Play Guidelines' for all Club Activities. In order to play with FCSSC and stay in good standing, the following guidelines MUST be followed. To ensure a successful season, please remember to practice safe physical distancing and a positive attitude! All players are required to read, understand, and adhere to the following: 1. Safe Return to Play Guidelines 2. COVID-19 League Changes 3. Self Screening Tool (done before each game). 4. Sport-Specific Rule Modifications outlined below PLUS, 5. Facility specific COVID-19 Protocols (you can find these protocols in the facility link in your schedule once live). TEAM HEALTH AMBASSADOR (THA) All teams must assign a Team Health Ambassador (THA) for the season. The THA must be a registered player and identified using the “THA” label in your online roster. THA Role: o Keep a record of attendance at each game. This record may be called upon for contact tracing. o Ensure individual wellness checks “COVID-19 Self Screening” are completed by each player prior to each game. o Ask players to leave the game if they arrive showing symptoms of cold or flu. o Ensure physical distancing measures are enforced by your team. Physical distancing of two meters is mandatory when players are arriving on-site, playing the sport, resting/sitting on the sidelines, and departing the game. o Sport-specific rules may adjust physical distancing measures taken on the playing surface.

NFHS RULES CHANGES AFFECTING RISK (1982-2017) Baseball 1982 Batting helmets meeting NOCSAE Standard to be required in 1985. Slippery tape on bat handles is illegal. 1983 Any player warming up a pitcher at any location shall wear a protective cup and a mask with a throat protector Casts, splints or braces must be padded and there shall be no exposed metal or any other hard material. Prosthesis that is not dangerous will be permitted. 1984 Any on-deck batter is required to wear a batting helmet. Protective devices attached to a batting helmet must be approved by the state association. Nontraditional playing equipment must be reviewed by the NFHS Baseball Rules Committee before it will be permitted. A player who maliciously runs into a fielder is to be ejected and shall also be called out. Metal cleats were prohibited. 1985 Devices or attachments that cause bat handles to become flush with the knob are illegal. Only bats may be used in loosening up. 1986 Exterior warning label is mandatory on batting helmets. Players in coaches’ boxes required to wear a head protector. Jewelry is prohibited. Medical-alert bracelets or medical-alert necklaces are legal if taped to the body. 1987 Bases with tapered edges are permitted. On-deck circles should be placed 37’ away from home plate if space permits. Otherwise, they should be placed a safe distance to the side and away from home plate. 1988 Bases designed to disengage their anchor systems for safety purposes are legal. 1989 Metal cleats are permitted. By state association adoption, a double first base is permitted.

Goaltender Equipment Guide It essential to have proper-fitting ice hockey goaltender equipment, not only for your performance, but also for your safety. From your pads to your helmet and from your stick to your skates, your goaltending equipment has to perform and protect to keep you safe on the ice. Protective Goaltending Gear All goaltenders need leg pads and a chest protector, as well as a catch glove and blocker. Leg Pad Fitting and Sizing Goaltender leg pads generally come in sizes ranging from 26 to 34 inches. To determine your proper size, measure your leg from your ankle to the top of your kneecap. Then measure from the middle of your kneecap to half way up your thigh. Add these two numbers for your goalie leg pad size. If you are between sizes, choose the larger size for additional protection. Some goalies prefer their pads an inch or two shorter for increased maneuverability. Chest Protector Fitting and Sizing Chest pads offer protection to the vital chest and heart areas. Chest protectors protect most of the upper body. Chest protectors also include a spine protector for your back. Catch Glove & Blocker Gloves range from youth sizes of about 9 inches up to full adult sizes of 16 inches. Use a tape measure to measure the distance from the end of your elbow pads to the tips of your fingers. This number equals your glove size. Catch Glove o The catch glove looks very much like an oversized first baseman's mitt and is worn on your nonstick hand. o Catch gloves have an oversized catching area, a molded one-piece thumb area, a precurved palm and individual finger areas.

Such equipment should include gloves, shin pads, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hip pads or padded hockey pants, protective cup, tendon pads plus all head protective equipment as required by USA Hockey rules. It is recommended that all protective equipment be designed specifically for ice hockey. HELMETS A hockey helmet’s primary purpose is to prevent a skull fracture, not a concussion. A skull fracture or other blunt impact can be dissipated across the shells and foams of a helmet, but a concussion occurs due to rotational forces. What this means is, if your head moves rapidly, such as in a whiplash situation, a concussion may occur even without any impact to the head. WARNING Ice hockey is a collision sport that is dangerous. Hockey helmets afford no protection from neck or spinal injury. Severe head, brain or spinal injuries including paralysis or death may occur despite using a hockey helmet. Youth athletes should wear youth helmets. All players, including goalkeepers are required to properly wear a Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC) approved helmet as designed by the manufacturer and with no alterations and chin strap properly fastened. All youth through college players, including goalkeepers, are required to wear full facial protection—wire cage, full shield or combination mask certified by HECC, plus any chin protection that accompanies the face mask.

Box 34005 17790 No. 10 Highway Surrey, British Columbia V3S 8C4 Cloverdale Minor Hockey Association Equipment Checks The following is a guideline for the proper fitting of hockey equipment. Some of it is common sense, some of it is mandated by the rules as set forth by Hockey Canada, BC Hockey and or PCAHA. Equipment should be checked periodically through the year. Check it for damage, missing part, as well as proper fit. HELMET The helmet should fit properly and be adjusted so it is snug. The front of the helmet should come about halfway down the forehead. It should not be able to move around unless the player moves their head. There should be no cracks in the shell. If there are, then get a new one. There must be a valid CSA sticker on the helmet. There should not be any stickers on the helmet unless they are specifically approved for application to a hockey helmet (such as provided by Hockey Canada). Believe it or not, the glue on the stickers can degrade the plastic. All straps must be in good shape and firmly fastened. The chin strap must be done up and snug enough that only a finger will fit between the strap and the chin. MASK The mask must be attached firmly. Check the clips that hold the mask to the helmet for cracks. The mask should be made for the helmet, preferably made by the same company that made the helmet as they tend to fit better as a package.

Season Points of Emphasis: Lateral Skating, Depth Management and Stick Use 1) 5 Point Movement Ladder 5 min. OBJECTIVE: Develop goaltending skating while utilizing visual attachment to the next point. ORGANIZATION: 1. Set up 5 pucks or make 5 marks on the ice as shown. 2. Goaltender starts at the bottom of the ladder. 3. T-Push to the top of the ladder as if they are addressing the rush. 4. Use varying movements on the way back down the ladder. 5. Skate as if the imaginary net is behind you. VARIATION: Use the following movement progression. KEYPOINTS: Always using T-Push to climb the ladder. Lead each movement with Eyes, Chin and 1. T-Push. Shoulders., Push hard and set at each point. 2. Shuffle. 3. Butterfly-Full Recovery. 4. Butterfly- On-Ice Recovery. 5. Add a save visualization on the way up the ladder. 6. Add a save visualizaiion on the way down the ladder. GOALIE: Lead every movement with your eyes, chin and shoulders. When visualizing a save, make sure eyes and chin are fully committed to watching the save all the way. 2) Stick Save Progression 5 min. OBJECTIVE: Break down stick saves to work on the details of the goaltenders save execution. ORGANIZATION: Coach has pucks in the high slot area. (Vary the angle) This can be done with or without a net. This can be done anywhere on the ice.

Abstract Ice hockey goaltenders have the highest percentage of cam-type femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). The exact cause of these injuries in goaltenders remains unknown; however, it has been suggested that common goaltender movements and a goaltender’s underlying hip pathology may be contributing factors. The butterfly save technique, commonly used by goaltenders, has been linked to FAI. Simply stopping these movements would likely be detrimental to goaltender performance. Therefore, changing other aspects of goaltending, such as altering the goaltender equipment, should be considered. The overall objective of this thesis was to understand how ice hockey goaltender leg pads influence both the safety and performance of goaltenders.

Goalie Equipment Explanation
EQUIPMENT SELECTION Goaltenders have unique equipment and many myths abound concerning sizing, selection and purchasing. The first thing I need to mention is the fact that a goaltender that develops a fear of the puck is almost impossible to "cure". Usually, improperly sized equipment and poor protection are the causes of this problem. The situation is difficult to discuss because equipment is so expensive and no one can afford to spend thousands of dollars every year. The goal is to find equipment, either new or used, that balances cost without sacrificing protection. I'll discuss more specifics as I talk about the different equipment. UNDERGARMENTS Most pro goaltenders wear pajama-like T-shirts and pants underneath their equipment. This is because they are comfortable, absorb sweat, permit free movement and keep the goaltender warm during lulls in the play. You should use clean clothing every game and practice to prevent the dreaded hockey rash. Not to mention the fact that you will have more friends! JOCKS AND JILLS Without a doubt the most important piece of equipment a goaltender wears is the jock (Female goaltenders have a corresponding piece usually called a “jill”). The jock should be worn tightly without restricting movement. The goaltender's jock is larger and more thickly padded than a forward's jock because of the obvious trauma it is designed to prevent. Sometimes you can't totally protect yourself; you can only minimize the pain. Many pro goalies wear a forward's jock and a goaltender's jock over that . GARTERBELT The best way to keep the hockey socks in place is to use a garter belt to securely hold them.
