George Mason University's Building the Full Court Scramble
GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY'S BUILDING THE FULL COURT SCRAMBLE By Eric Konkol Assistant Basketball Coach George Mason Univeristy Applying effective full court pressure is an excellent way of taking your opponent out of their comfort zone in two simple ways. Its immediate effect is placing duress on the ball handlers, potentially forcing dribbling on passing errors, well before they get across half court and into the scoring area. In the long term, the effects of persistent pressure, constant guessing, and an increase in tempo can cause additional physical and mental fatigue on your opponent and give you a great opportunity for success. Nearly eight years ago, Jim Larranga inherited a George Mason University men’s basketball program that suffered through seven losing seasons including four last place finishes in the Colonial Athletic Association. After implementing an intense style of pressure defense that includes the Full Court Scramble, George Mason now has the most wins in the CAA as well as four postseason tournament appearances in the past six years. At George Mason, we believe that being successful at the Full Court Scramble requires three inner qualities before our players ever step onto the floor. Our three-part philosophy includes: attitude, commitment, and class. First, everyone must have a positive attitude. Each of us makes a decision each day on what type of attitude we will have. We emphasize enthusiasm, passion, along with hard work in our program. There is going to be adversity, and how we bounce back is vital. Secondly, everyone must be totally and unconditionally committed. We must work hard to improve every day, no matter the circumstances. -

Jared Miller Buzzer Beater
FORM: Jared Miller Buzzer Beater TEACHER WORKSHEET: GRADES 7-8 This lesson plan provides an engaging way for students to listen to Jared Miller’s Buzzer Beater and document the unconventional sound eects we hear in this piece. Miller uses instruments and objects to create a musical representation of the last two minutes of a basketball game. The following activities will guide students in listening for the interesting sound eects in this piece, and tracking them both in real time and in the orchestral score. Age appropriate learning within this lesson plan includes exploring dierent timbres or qualities of sounds and reading musical notation. OBJECTIVES • Actively listen for sound effects in a piece of music. • Learn how to listen using timecodes to identify musical events in a piece of music. • Learn how to listen using page numbers and bar numbers to identify musical events in a piece of music. STEPS • Together as a class or in pairs, have students read the introduction to this module found at TSO.CA/Elearning, which includes composer Jared Miller’s description of the piece. • Hand out the Sound Effect Scavenger Hunt worksheet to each student or pair of students. • Have students use the following link to access the recording of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra performing Buzzer Beater on YouTube, where they will be able to see the video timecode and record it in column two of the worksheet: https://youtu.be/2XkbGFpjUpY • Have students access the score to Buzzer Beater at TSO.CA/Elearning and look for text indicating each sound effect. U-17 Goaltending Program Technical Curriculum
U-17 Goaltending Program Technical Curriculum U-17 Goaltending Program Technical Curriculum INTRODUCTION: GOALTENDING SKATING DRILLS To be a good goaltender you must be an efficient skater. Your goaltender does not necessarily have to be the fastest skater on the team, but the best in terms of control and mobility. Pushes from post to post and ability to get quickly to plays laterally are essential for goalies to be able to perform at a high level. Goaltenders must learn to push with strength and stop hard when needed. So when doing T-push or shuffle drills I suggest everything is done in sequence. Example: A coach should be calling out for the goalie to PUSH----STOP----PUSH----STOP------ PUSH----STOP etc. giving one second in between pushes. This will give the goaltender time to recover and will keep him from developing bad habits by doing the drill too fast. The ability for a goaltender to change directions quickly is also an absolute must as today’s game is a lot about trying to create a situation to get a goaltender moving in the wrong direction. In order to do this, and be effective, skating drills are a natural part of goaltender development. 1988-89 OPC Set of 270 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee Set of 270 (Loose Stickers)
1988-89 OPC Set of 270 1988-89 O-Pee-Chee Set of 270 (loose stickers) 4 Key Rookie (RC) Stickers Joe Nieuwendyk, Bret Hull, Bob Probert and Sean Burke. Sticker History This was the second O-Pee-Chee sticker series where the sticker backs were printed on more glossy cardboard stock than the thinner paper backings of the previous 7-8 years. There were 182 physical stickers in this set with 88 of those sharing a number with another sticker. The quality of the cut of the sticker seeemed to improve after they worked out all of the kinks from the 1987 O-Pee-Chee run. For the second year in a row, the traditional sticker package that had to be “ripped” open from their vaccuum package, was replaced by wax type packs that were only previously used to encase hockey cards. The sticker album from this year seemed to be made in abundance, whereas the stickers were a little harder to track down. This was the last year that Wayne Gretzky would appear in an Oilers jersey. O-Pee-Chee distributed these stickers out of London, Ontario in Canada. Sticker Facts The size of each full sticker is 5.4 cm X 7.6 cm (2.13 in X 3 in). There were 48 packages in each wax box which originally retailed for $0.30 CAD per pack. Each package contained 5 stickers. The minimum number of packages needed to make a full set (assuming absolutely no doubles) is 37. The original album ($0.59) cover featured Denis Savard.
