    Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Introduction As part of this study it is important to understand the development of the Southeast Asia region in a historical context. This development is highly influenced by trade. Many foreign powers are attracted to the region because of the economic welfare. They take cities and trade posts like Jayakarta (renamed Batavia) (East Indies), Galle (Sri Lanka), Cochin (India) and Melaka (Malaya). The implementation of some settlements in Asia is highly influenced by these European countries. Foreign powers that conquer parts of Asia include the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and British. The Dutch leave their mark on settlements in Asia through lay-out and architecture in a very recognizable, entirely different way from the Portuguese or Spanish. Therefore it is necessary to have an understanding of the development of Dutch settlements in Asia and the influence that Dutch architecture has on the buildings in Asia, especially, on shop houses in Asia. With the influx in the number of foreign tourists together with the number of locals, mobility within these cities has become a challenging issue to be dealt by the city managers. Taking into cognizance the global warming and climate change, the most appropriate mode of transportation that considers these issues and simultaneously appreciates the urban aesthetics and heritage tourism products in a heritage city needs to be identified. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the most appropriate mode of transportation that incorporates carbon footprint mitigation, urban sensory elements and tourists' satisfactions components. Data were collected through participant observation were analyzed. Geographic information systems (GIS) application is used to analyze the study area spatially. The findings demonstrate that walking is the most appropriate as it is able to satisfy tourists in appreciating urban sensory elements and simultaneously mitigate carbon footprint. The study concludes that in order to sustain heritage cities and handling global warming issues simultaneously, future development in these cities should be strictly controlled and monitored and the use non motorized vehicles such as bicycles and trishaws other than walking should be promoted within these cities. 1.0 Introduction Tourism and climate change are interlinked in a complex manner.

BOUGAS Patani in the Beginning of the XVIIe Century Introduction The 15th and 16th centuries witnessed the rise and proliferation of coast al,Muslim states based on trade in peninsular Malaysia and the Indones ianarchipelago. Examples were Aceh, Malacca, Johor, Patani, Banten, Demak, and Makassar. This paper will focus on only one of these states, Patani, located on the Malay Peninsula in what is today modern Thailand. The paper seeks to describe the form that Patani took, how it physi callymanifested itself, in the early 1600's during Raja Ijau's reign when the city was most prosperous and powerful. It describes the various dis tricts, edifices, and monuments that made up the city and explains where they were located in relation to each other. In a sense this article is a guide to a 17th century Malay city. The paper begins with a brief summary of Patani' s early history down to 1785 when the city was destroyed by Bangkok. This history is followed by a general description of the city in the early 1600's. Principal areas in the town and their locations relative to one another are identified. Next a detailed district by district description of the town is provided.
