II History of the Dutch in South-Asia
Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Introduction As part of this study it is important to understand the development of the Southeast Asia region in a historical context. This development is highly influenced by trade. Many foreign powers are attracted to the region because of the economic welfare. They take cities and trade posts like Jayakarta (renamed Batavia) (East Indies), Galle (Sri Lanka), Cochin (India) and Melaka (Malaya). The implementation of some settlements in Asia is highly influenced by these European countries. Foreign powers that conquer parts of Asia include the Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and British. The Dutch leave their mark on settlements in Asia through lay-out and architecture in a very recognizable, entirely different way from the Portuguese or Spanish. Therefore it is necessary to have an understanding of the development of Dutch settlements in Asia and the influence that Dutch architecture has on the buildings in Asia, especially, on shop houses in Asia. This study eventually leads to a better understanding of Dutch architecture in Melaka. 37 shop houses, 9 public buildings and the fort have been selected to give a more in depth study of their facade analysis. In this study a comparison is made with other, pre- 1 vious, studies about the analysis of shop houses. 1.2 Literature used for this Research The research questions form the base of the study. To be able to answer these questions literature had to be studied related to the research questions. -

With the influx in the number of foreign tourists together with the number of locals, mobility within these cities has become a challenging issue to be dealt by the city managers. Taking into cognizance the global warming and climate change, the most appropriate mode of transportation that considers these issues and simultaneously appreciates the urban aesthetics and heritage tourism products in a heritage city needs to be identified. Therefore, this study seeks to identify the most appropriate mode of transportation that incorporates carbon footprint mitigation, urban sensory elements and tourists' satisfactions components. Data were collected through participant observation were analyzed. Geographic information systems (GIS) application is used to analyze the study area spatially. The findings demonstrate that walking is the most appropriate as it is able to satisfy tourists in appreciating urban sensory elements and simultaneously mitigate carbon footprint. The study concludes that in order to sustain heritage cities and handling global warming issues simultaneously, future development in these cities should be strictly controlled and monitored and the use non motorized vehicles such as bicycles and trishaws other than walking should be promoted within these cities. 1.0 Introduction Tourism and climate change are interlinked in a complex manner. -

“HATUCHEKI NA WATU”: KENYAN HIP-HOP ARTISTS’ THEORIES OF MULTILINGUALISM, IDENTITY AND DECOLONIALITY By Esther Milu A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Rhetoric and Writing - Doctor of Philosophy 2016 ABSTRACT “HATUCHEKI NA WATU”: KENYAN HIP-HOP ARTISTS’ THEORIES OF MULTILINGUALISM, IDENTITY AND DECOLONIALITY By Esther Milu This is a qualitative research study that constellates several theoretical and methodological approaches to understand why and how three Kenyan Hip-hop artists, Jua Cali, Nazizi Hirji and Abbas Kubbaff, engage in translingual communicative practices. A variety of data types including in-depth phenomenologial interviews, lyrical content and multimodal compositions were evaluated to understand how and why the artists used particular linguistic and semiotic resources in composing their texts and in their everyday communication. A translingual analytical framework was applied to examine these resources across various modalities of communication: verbal, written, audio, visual, performative and embodied. Findings from the study indicate that the artists translingual practices are aimed at : 1) constructing various ethnicities and indentities based on their everyday language use and not on dominant language ideologies or theories of race and ethnicity in the country; 2) engaging in language activism work by raising critical language awareness within dominant institutions, and by actively participating in the preservation of youth languages and cultures; 3) theozing and practicing diverse options for cultural and linguistic decolonization. The study concludes by proposing a translingual pedagogy that challenges students to demonstrate critical awareness of the “linguistic culture” surrounding the languages, codes and symbolic practices they use in their translingual composing. -

In this new landscape, the emergence of smart devices is highly favorable to connect everyday infrastructures via the present networks available to create a sense of place. The concept of sense of place in heritage and culture is synonymous with Melaka as a famous heritage site which achieved recognition from UNESCO. However, when it comes to tourist behaviors, their place attachment, arrivals and purpose of visit highly influence their perceptions. Their priority in selecting Melaka as their holiday destination might differ based on several place attachment affective factors which are influenced by digital technologies. -

i ii Native in a New World The Trans-Atlantic Life of Pocahontas Mikaëla M. Adams Miami University Oxford, Ohio 2007 iii Abstract Historians studying the early contact period typically focus on the interaction of European newcomers with indigenous peoples on the North American continent. However, Europeans were not the only people to travel across the Atlantic, nor were they the only ones to experience the surprise and amazement of seeing a new world. Many Native American people voyaged to Europe, some as captives, some as emissaries for their people, and some as the spouses of Europeans. Pocahontas is the best-known of these trans-Atlantic individuals, and although she left no written record of her own, it is possible to reconstruct some of her experiences as an explorer of Europe. Despite the efforts of the Jamestown colonists to educate her in English mores, her own people’s teachings and customs continued to effect how she saw the foreigners and the strange new world of seventeenth-century London. While attending a Guy Fawkes’ Day celebration in England, she may have recalled her own people’s use of fire to destroy enemies. Upon meeting King James I at the royal Twelfth Night masque, she perhaps compared his displays of wealth and power to those of her father. As she lay dying of a mysterious European illness, she may have wondered how English medical practices would compare to the healing traditions of the Powhatans. In order to make sense of all that she experienced in England, she drew upon the cultural knowledge of her people.
