    Jamini Roy & Somnath Hore: Figuration in the Bengal School November 1 – December 1, 2012 Press Preview & Reception: Thursday, November 1, 6:00pm – 8:00pm 35 Great Jones St., New York NY 10012 AICON GALLERY is pleased to present Jamini Roy & Somnath Hore: Figuration in the Bengal School, an exhibition exploring the extremes of representation and artistic vision within India’s Bengal School of Art. Based primarily in Kolkata and Santiniketan, the Bengal School was an artistic movement and painting tradition founded at the turn of the 19th century, which spread throughout India during the British Raj of the early 20th century. Originally an avant-garde and nationalist movement in reaction to previous academic styles, the Bengal School was led by Abanindranath Tagore (Indian, 1871- 1951) and sought to modernize Moghul and Rajput styles, to counter the influence of Western art traditions. Along with his brother Gaganendranath Tagore (Indian, 1867-1938) and pupil Nandalal Jamini Roy, Untitled (Three Figures), Tempera and cloth on board, Bose (India, 1882-1966), these artists represented the early 17.5 x 33 in. modernists of India. The Bengal School was often associated with Indian nationalism (swadeshi) as an official Indian art style, but also found support from British art institutions under the epithet of the Indian Society of Oriental Art (founded in 1907 by the Tagore brothers). From the 1920s onward, prominent Bengal School artists embarked on widely divergent, often aesthetically polarized paths. However, figuration remained the central focus for those at the forefront of the movement’s modernist evolution. Some embraced images of tranquility and nature, of myth and mysticism, depicting playful folk scenes during turbulent sociopolitical times, while others portrayed the darker forces of humanity, exploring famine, spiritual torment and violent conflict.

    Beyond Limits 2013 The only way to discover the limits of the possible is to go beyond them into the impossible. Arthur C. Clarke ooking back in time it was a journey we started with our hearts full of hope and anticipation. It was a dream we dared to dream, and the purity of our intentions saw the light of the day. ‘Beyond Limits’ is an L exhibition-cum-sale of exemplary artworks by talented artists with disabilities. These are talents from all across India who have been blessed with elusive creativity. An initiative by FOD, first introduced in the year 2001, to bring to the world the beauty of art which not just soothes the eyes but touches hearts too. Beyond Limits was conceptualized by FOD to a give platform to this talent to showcase their exclusive artwork, which otherwise looked impossible due to barriers- physical, financial, communicational and attitudinal. This noble thought and work has borne fruit; this exhibition is 10th in ‘Beyond Limits’ series. This year, Beyond Limits has again received record breaking participation with jury finding it extremely difficult to select the works for display. Despite the strict selection carried out, the works of 48 artists have been chosen including one with an intellectual disability. Amongst the selected artists many have been honored with Bachelors and Masters degree in Fine Arts. There are many who are currently pursuing their studies in Fine Arts. A few of the participating artists have years of experience in arts to speak for them while 10 of them are getting first opportunity to showcase their work in Beyond Limits.

    Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) By Ricardo Lopez A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair Professor Ivonne del Valle Professor Robert Kaufman Fall 2015 Abstract Refashioning the Sociopolitical in Spanish Modernist Literature (1902-1914) by Ricardo Lopez Doctor of Philosophy in Romance Languages and Literatures with a Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Dru Dougherty, Chair In this dissertation I argue that the modernist breakthroughs achieved by José Martínez Ruiz’s La voluntad (1902), Ramón del Valle-Inclán’s Sonata de otoño (1902), and Miguel de Unamuno’s Niebla (1914) emerged as a response to the shortsightedness of the revolutionary politics that had taken root in Restoration Spain. I examine how these writers take the historical materials of their sociopolitical world—its tropes and uses of language—and reconstellate them as artworks in which the familiar becomes estranged and reveals truths that have been obscured by the ideological myopia of Spain’s radicalized intellectuals. Accordingly, I demonstrate that the tropes, language, and images that constitute La voluntad, Niebla, and Sonata de otoño have within them a historical sediment that turns these seemingly apolitical works into an “afterimage” of Spain’s sociopolitical reality. Thus I show how sociopolitical critiques materialize out of the dialectic between historical materials and their artistic handling. Although La voluntad, Sonata de otoño, and Niebla seem to eschew political themes, I contend that they are the product of their authors’ keen understanding of the politics of their moment.
