The double-wide version of the chair was designed in 1948 for use in his landmark Warren, MI General Motors Technical Center, Saarinen’s first major commission. The form, achieved through sculpted resin, leveraged the technical expertise of Hudson Winner, a boat maker who worked with Saarinen and Florence Knoll to prototype many of the architect’s early designs. Knoll approached the original design with the benefit of updated molding techniques and materials, reintroducing the Model 73 Womb Settee after six decades. EERO SAARINEN Son of the celebrated Eliel Saarinen, Eero was classically trained in sculpture and architecture. His collaboration with Charles Eames in 1937 led to the creation of the Organic Armchair. Made from plywood and foam rubber, it was the first chair to be constructed out of molded plywood. This interest in organic forms is reflected in many of his furniture designs such as the Tulip Collection. However, his design aesthetic is most famously expressed in his iconic Womb Chair, which he developed upon Florence Knoll’s request for “a chair that is like a basket full of pillows.something that [she] can curl up in.” A prolific architect, Saarinen designed the Dulles Airport in Washington, D.C., the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, the TWA Terminal at Kennedy International Airport in New York, and the Kresge Auditorium on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
