Haemoglobin concentrations (HB), red blood cell count (RBC), white blood cell count (WBC), packed cell volume (PCV), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), platelet count and differential white blood cell counts were determined. Clinical biochemistry included the activity of GGT, AST, ALT, CK, ALP, LDH and AMYL, concentrations of glucose (GLUC), total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), cholesterol (CHOL), triglycerides (TRI), calcium (Ca), phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), iron (Fe), urea (UREA), creatinine (CREA) and total bilirubin (TBIL). The animals were sorted into groups according to sex and age, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) was preformed using the GLM procedure and Tukey’s studentized range test.

In the present study modern technology of DNA extraction and automatic genotyping was applied in Bosnian and Herzegovinian autochthonous horse breed by using 17-Plex horse genotyping kit. The study was aimed at investigating usefulness of the 17-plex STR Kit for Bosnian mountain horse genotyping and establishing highly useful microsatellite markers system for genetic diversity studies in Bosnian mountain horse breed. Genomic DNA was extracted from whole blood collected from 22 unrelated Bosnian mountain horse specimens. A total of 95 alleles were detected. Average number of detected alleles per locus was 5.588, varying from 3 (HTG7) to 10 (ASB17). Average effective number of alleles was 3.603, fluctuating from 1.789 (HMS7) to 5.728 (HMS2). The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.136 (HMS3) to 0.909 (ASB2) with a mean of 0.631.

  • Challenges for Smallholder Livestock Production in Croatia
CHALLENGES FOR SMALLHOLDER LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION IN CROATIA Ivanković A. and Ramljak J. Department of Animal Production and Technology, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb, Zagreb, Croatia; [email protected] Abstract Animal production in Croatia in recent decades has experienced significant structural changes in order to adjust to the environment and market conditions. This adjustment takes into account the local tradition of animal production, potential of the environment, consumer demands, economic integration and other influences. Consolidation of smallholders in smaller number is noticeable through an increased size of farms, introduction of modern production technologies and more productive breeds (genotypes). However, in Croatia small family farms still predominate, trying to meet market demands, modernize technologies, breed autochthonous breeds, profile their production towards specific added-value products and maintain direct access to the market. The biggest changes are noticeable in cattle, pig and poultry production, while the traditional production of sheep is less exposed to market pressures. From the past examples we recognize that industrialization of animal production is not the only approach that should be supported, as small and medium-sized family farms should also be preserved and developed. They are a vital part of the animal production system, important to keep traditions alive, while ensuring security of food production, vitality of rural areas, care for the rural landscape, etc. Keywords: livestock, production, smallholder, Croatia, trends General about animal production in Croatia In order to better understand the position of small and medium-sized farm holders in Croatia, we briefly point to several general indicators concerning the structure of agricultural area, population, the proportion of urban and rural areas, and other indicators of current agricultural production.

Accepted - Prihvaćeno: 08.07.2013. Summary Microelements concentrations of Al, Co, Cr, Li, Mo, Ni, Sb and Sr were determined in the milk of Croatian Coldblood mares by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spec- trometry. The total mean element contents in mares milk were (mg/kg): Al<10, Co<10, Cr 26.7, Li 4.35, Mo 11.0, Ni<10, Sb 70.1 and Sr 467. Variation of Li, Sb and Sr concentrations were found throughout the lactation stages (days 10-180). Correlations were found among ele- ments in mares milk. In general, very limited data are available on the microelements content of Al, Cr, Co, Li, Mo, Ni, Sb and Sr in mares milk. To our knowledge this is the first report of the content of these microelements in milk of mares in Croatia. Key words: microelements, milk, horse, ICP-OES, Croatia Introduction lactose content in mares milk is similar to that of human milk and higher than cow milk, the vitamin The use of mares milk for human nutrition has C content in mares milk is much richer than in hu- been increasing over the past decade.

Just this documentation is often lacking in the countries and regions that are, due to their ecological niche, particularly rich in indigenous breeds. The Con- vention on Biological Diversity (Rio de Janeiro, 1992), in particular article 2, requires in- situ conservation of domesticated species. This can then be achieved if a comprehen- sive mapping provides an appropriate overview. The “Atlas of Rare Breeds and Varieties of the Balkans” is a basis for the further conser- vation work at national and private level, to raise awareness and create more publicity. For documenting of the conservation of animal genetic resources, FAO expects that there are verifiable facts and figures (DAD-IS database and “State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources”). This demand cannot be met by the states of the Balkan region at the moment. It is even difficult for private actors to provide this level of information. The Atlas of Rare Breeds and Varieties of the Balkan may, therefore, fill a previously existing information gap This printed version is an addition to the database on the internet.
