Kwaku’s work is a testament to Brent’s contribution to the evolution of British black music and the commercial infrastructure to support it. His research contained separate sections on labels, shops, artists, radio stations and sound systems. In this version we have amalgamated these into a single ‘encyclopedia’ and added entries that cover the period between 2007-2020. The process of gathering Brent’s musical heritage is an ongoing task - there are many incomplete entries and gaps. GULLY: A JAMAICAN “RURAL” ETHNOGRAPHY A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Sally A. Jordan, Urban Education Jayminn Sulir Sanford-DeShields, External Member, College of Education, Temple University i ABSTRACT This ethnographic study examines the relationships between cultural commodities and identity formation in a Jamaican rural locale. This study represents 24 months of participant observation, participant interviews and artifact analysis in St. Thomas, Jamaica. This study provides analytic descriptions of how identity development is experienced by youth in St. Thomas during the era of Gaza vs. Gully. Chapter one outlines the statement of the problem and the research questions. Chapter two frames the literature and theoretical frameworks utilized in the study. The methodology of the study and the case for the utilization of ethnography is explained in Chapter three. The social, cultural, and political context of St. Thomas as well as the Gaza vs. Gully era is discussed in Chapter four along with the introduction of the four main participants of the study. Chapter five utilizes examples and experiences from the lives of the four main participants to analyze the features of identity development in this specific “time and space”. Conclusions about and implications of the data from the participant observation presented will continue to be addressed in Chapter six. -

A sad month for many of us here in Oxford with the passing from prostate cancer on March 28 of Ras Brother John aka BJ, who featured on the cover of The Dub’s January 2018 issue. He will be much missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and close friends. There are several interviews this month: Alex Caramellino aka Jah Fingers, GT Moore and Gary Constant with the first part of an interview that digs deep into Oxford’s sound system history of the early 70s. There will be more interviews with others who have been involved in our town’s reggae history in future issues. There are lots of events in this month’s Dub Diary featuring friends and contributors to The Dub, including Asher Messenjah, Jah Lion Movement, Field Frequency, Ali Zion and High Grade. I would like to offer a heartfelt salute to those who continue to write for The Dub and support the magazine in other ways – Steve Mosco, Pete Clack, Leo B, Ali Zion, Simon Wade, Jawara Ellis, Jah Porter, Zioness, Lew Lewis M, Asher Messenjah, Jules Dalitz and Natty Mark.
