• Go to my webpage and open the document titled, Sonnet 116 Text. You can open this in iAnnotate to take notes and label/mark on it if that helps you, and then save it to your Dropbox to study come test time, but that is not required. • Read the sonnet. • Go to Videos app on the iPad and watch “Sonnet 116.” This video contains a few clips from movies that make references to Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 116,” and that will not only help you to understand the sonnet, but will show you how the works of Shakespeare appear everywhere. To a degree, it is important to be Shakespeare literate so that you do not miss out when you encounter references to his works. You can completely understand a movie you see, a song you hear, even an advertisement you see etc. . . . The words of Shakespeare are truly powerful, influential, and inspiring, and it is for that reason that we will continue to see Shakespeare’s influence in works today. • As you watch the video, you will be asked 3 questions. Pause the video when prompted to answer them. The questions will also appear on the screen and provide a little more information to help you than just what I say, so be sure to watch the video. You will return to this document at the end of the video to continue the analysis. 4. Return to the text of “Sonnet 116.” Write down all examples of enjambment (just provide the line # for each example). Enjambment is defined in the document in your Dropbox if you need a review. 5. What are two points that the speaker makes about true love in “Sonnet 116”? 6. What metaphor is used to describe love in the second quatrain? 7. What is the theme of this sonnet, and how does the metaphor in the second quatrain help reveal the message? (Remember that authors use techniques to convey their message.) 8. Go to Videos and watch Video B. This is the poetry pairing for “Sonnet 116.” It is a clip from the American Idol Season 10 auditions. Watch the clip and then do the following: a. Explain how the American Idol clip about Chris and Juliana’s story pairs with “Sonnet 116.” How is it a great example of the message expressed in the sonnet? Pull from the video and the sonnet for proof. 9. Fill in your sonnet chart for “Sonnet 116.” From Dropbox, open your Sonnet Elements Chart fill-in into iAnnotate. Save it as Annotated when finished. Don’t forget to delete from iAnnotate! a. Tone- provide a tone for at least one quatrain with textual evidence and a tone for the with textual evidence. b. Imagery- provide at least 4 examples (any sense). Be sure to identify the sense with the example. c. Figurative Language- provide the example of the metaphor from question #5. d. Sound Devices- indicate the alliteration of a consonant sound in line 13. Why do you think that sound is repeated? Think about how the sound reinforces the tone in the couplet.

If you have class time left when you finish “Sonnet 116,” do one or both of the following: • study for your SAT quiz over lesson 6. Go to my webpage and select SAT Lesson 6. Go through the flashcards and/or review games. DO NOT just stare at the list. Actively study! I have also posted SAT 6 Sentences under Documents to help you with identifying the words in context. Read the instructions given. • study for your sonnet test that will be on Tuesday 2/24 or Wednesday 2/25 (7th period will take part 1 on Tuesday and part 2 on Wednesday).
