Portfolio contents must be done in full to receive any credit. Write your definitions and responses on notebook paper or in your spiral. • Write down the following definitions: o Impediments- reasons why a marriage should not be allowed to take place o Ever-fixed mark- landmark o Bark- ship o Star to every wandering bark- the star that guides every lost ship: the North Star. o Sickle- scythe; long curving blade the Grim Reaper carries o Compass- range o Doom- Judgment Day • Go to my webpage and open the document titled, Sonnet 116 Text. You can open this in iAnnotate to take notes and label/mark on it if that helps you, and then save it to your Dropbox to study come test time, but that is not required. • Read the sonnet. • Go to Videos app on the iPad and watch “Sonnet 116.” This video contains a few clips from movies that make references to Shakespeare’s “Sonnet 116,” and that will not only help you to understand the sonnet, but will show you how the works of Shakespeare appear everywhere. To a degree, it is important to be Shakespeare literate so that you do not miss out when you encounter references to his works. You can completely understand a movie you see, a song you hear, even an advertisement you see etc. The words of Shakespeare are truly powerful, influential, and inspiring, and it is for that reason that we will continue to see Shakespeare’s influence in works today. • As you watch the video, you will be asked 3 questions. Pause the video when prompted to answer them. The questions will also appear on the screen and provide a little more information to help you than just what I say, so be sure to watch the video. You will return to this document at the end of the video to continue the analysis. Here are the names of the characters in the clips that you may want to refer to in your responses: o Clip 1- Beatrice and Benedict o Clip 2- Paul and Meryl Morgan o Clip 3- Marianne and Willoughby Do not skip around. Watch the video first. 4. Return to the text of “Sonnet 116.” Write down all examples of enjambment (just provide the line # for each example). Enjambment is defined in the Sonnet 130 document in your Dropbox if you need a review. 5. What are two points that the speaker makes about true love in “Sonnet 116”? 6. What metaphor is used to describe love in the second quatrain? 7. What is the theme of this sonnet, and how does the metaphor in the second quatrain help reveal the message? (Remember that authors use techniques to convey their message.) 8. Go to Videos and watch Video B. This is the poetry pairing for “Sonnet 116.” It is a clip from the American Idol Season 10 auditions. Watch the clip and then do the following: a. Explain how the American Idol clip about Chris and Juliana’s story pairs with “Sonnet 116.” How is it a great example of the message expressed in the sonnet? Pull from the video and the sonnet for proof. 9. Fill in your sonnet chart for “Sonnet 116.” From Dropbox, open your Sonnet Elements Chart fill-in into iAnnotate. Save it as Annotated when finished. Don’t forget to delete from iAnnotate! a. Tone- provide a tone for at least one quatrain with textual evidence and a tone for the couplet with textual evidence. b. Imagery- provide at least 4 examples (any sense). Be sure to identify the sense with the example. c. Figurative Language- provide the example of the metaphor from question #5. d. Sound Devices- indicate the alliteration of a consonant sound in line 13. Why do you think that sound is repeated? Think about how the sound reinforces the tone in the couplet. If you have class time left when you finish “Sonnet 116,” do one or both of the following: • study for your SAT quiz over lesson 6. Go to my webpage and select SAT Lesson 6. Go through the flashcards and/or review games. DO NOT just stare at the list. Actively study! I have also posted SAT 6 Sentences under Documents to help you with identifying the words in context. Read the instructions given. • study for your sonnet test that will be on Tuesday 2/24 or Wednesday 2/25 (7th period will take part 1 on Tuesday and part 2 on Wednesday). This kind of activity helps students become aware of the sound devices an author uses to lend music to a text and to connect meaningful words and phrases through the use of sound. In order to do the first two activities, students will need instruction about what a sonnet is and how it is structured. This information can be provided by the teacher or inferred from a group study of several sonnets and their structure. Iambic pentameter is a meter that consists of repeated patterns of unstressed and stressed syllables. An iamb consists of two syllables, the first unstressed, the second stressed.     Lecture 1 William Shakespeare as a Poet Shakespeare’s earliest publication, and by far the best-selling work in his lifetime, was the nearly 1200-line poem Venus and Adonis (1593), published in 10 editions between 1594 and 1602. In Shakespeare’s re-telling of the classical tale, Venus, the goddess of love, tries to seduce Adonis, a young hunter, but is rebuffed. Adonis is then killed on a hunting expedition by a wild boar. Readers were titillated by the erotic nature of the poem, and lines from it were frequently excerpted in print and manuscript. Because of its popularity, other printed poems soon followed. Rape of Lucrece was published in 1594 to great acclaim. His name appeared on the title page of The Passionate Pilgrim (1599) despite the fact that only a handful of the poems were by him. ―The Phoenix and the Turtle‖ appeared in Love’s Martyr in 1601, and Shakespeare’s Sonnets in 1609 Shakespeare’s sonnets are considered a continuation of the sonnet tradition that swept through the Renaissance from Petrarch in 14th-century Italy and was finally introduced in 16th-century England by Thomas Wyatt and was given its rhyming meter and division into quatrains by Henry Howard. With few exceptions, Shakespeare’s sonnets observe the stylistic form of the English sonnet—the rhyme scheme, the 14 lines, and the meter. But Shakespeare’s sonnets introduce such significant departures of content that they seem to be rebelling against well-worn 200-year-old traditions. Instead of expressing worshipful love for an almost goddess-like yet unobtainable female love-object, as Petrarch, Dante, and Philip Sidney had done, Shakespeare introduces a young man.

    Honors Literature and Short Stories Page 1 of 6 English 9 – Semester 2 Week 17 Shakespeare The Sonnet Shakespeare was a writer who wrote plays in verse form. The English sonnet form was used by other poets, however William Shakespeare seemed to make it his own. Shakespeare included sonnets into several of his plays, including Romeo and Juliet. In a play form, often the sonnet carried between two or more character’s dialogue lines. When you hear about “Shakespeare’s Sonnets” however, the reference is to a group of 154 sonnet poems published as Shakespeare’s Sonnets in 1609. It has been generally agreed that Shakespeare wrote these sonnets between about 1592 and 1597. Form The Petrarchian Sonnet or the Italian Sonnet is one form of sonnet typified with a rhyme scheme of abbaabba cdecde. The Petrarchian sonnet consists of one octave (eight lines), followed by a sestet (six lines). The rhyme scheme is abbaabba cdecde. We will, however, focus on the English Sonnet, made famous by Shakespeare. The English Sonnet consists of three quatrains followed by a couplet. The rhyme scheme for the sonnet is abab cdcd efef gg. Sonnets in Shakespeare’s time often told a love story. However, since our purpose is to understand the form, your sonnets may be about anything. Basically it is a story told in this rhyme pattern. Meter To make this a little more complicated, the sonnet employs a specific meter. Each line of the sonnet is written in iambic pentameter. That means that each line has ten syllables – that is five groups of two syllables with the accent on the second syllable.
