In this context, one of the most enigmatic empidoid families is Hybotidae. Within the framework of a pilot study, we barcoded 339 specimens of Old World hybotids belonging to 164 species and 22 genera (plus two Empis as outgroups) and attempted to evaluate whether patterns of intra- and interspecific divergences match the current tax- onomy. -

The Australian endemic genus Apterodromia Oldroyd (Diptera: Empidoidea) is revised and includes four apterous species (A. evansi Oldroyd, A. minuta n.sp, A. setosa n.sp., and A. tasmanica n.sp.) and eight fully winged species (A. aurea n.sp., A. bickeli n.sp., A. irrorata n.sp., A. monticola n.sp., A. pala n.sp., A. spilota n.sp., A. tonnoiri n.sp., and A. vespertina n.sp.). The male of A. evansi is described and zoogeographic patterns of the genus are discussed. On the basis of wing venation and male terminalia Apterodromia is transferred from the Tachydromiinae to the tribe Ocydromiini (subfamily Ocydromiinae). The Ocydromiini is redefined, two new genera (Neotrichina n.gen. and Leptodromia n.gen.) are described, and all included genera are listed. Keys to major lineages of Australian Empidoidea and Southern Hemisphere genera of Ocydromiini are provided. ROBBER-FLIES and EMPIDS Asilus ROBBER-FLIES Asilidae. Very bristly predatory flies that head from front generally chase and catch other insects in mid-air. Most species sit in wait and dart out when likely prey appears. The prey is then sucked dry with the stout proboscis, which projects horizontally or obliquely forward. There is a deep groove between the eyes in both sexes, the eyes never touching even in males. A 'beard' on the face protects eyes from struggling prey. Legs are sturdy and have 2 pads at most. Wings folded flat over body at rest. Larvae eat some dead vegetable matter, but most are at least partly predatory and some feed mainly on beetle and fly grubs in the soil. S. ;., Leptogaster cylindrica. Feet without pads. Hind femur yellow. 3rd antennal segment ends in bristle. One of the slimmest robber-flies, it resembles a crane-fly in flight. It hunts in grassy places, flying slowly and plucking aphids from the grasses. 5-8. A L. guttiventris is similar but has reddish hind femur. 85 Dioctria atricapi/la. First 2 long veins reach margin. Beard rather sparse and, as in all Oioctria species, the antennae spring from a prominence high on the head. -

The number A of abdominal segments varies, however; there are only six in the Collembola (springtails), 9–12 in the Protura, and 10 in the Diplura, whereas in all other hexapods there are strictly 11. Insects are now regarded as comprising only those hexapods with 11 abdominal segments. Whereas crustaceans are the dominant group of arthropods in the sea, hexapods prevail on land, in numbers and biomass. Altogether, the Hexapoda constitutes the most diverse group of animals – the estimated number of described species worldwide is just over 900,000, with the beetles (order Coleoptera) comprising more than a third of these. Today, the Hexapoda is considered to contain four classes – the Insecta, and the Protura, Collembola, and Diplura. The latter three classes were formerly allied with the insect orders Archaeognatha (jumping bristletails) and Thysanura (silverfish) as the insect subclass Apterygota (‘wingless’). The Apterygota is now regarded as an artificial assemblage (Bitsch & Bitsch 2000). -

The family Lonchopteridae has only one genus, Lonchoptera Meigen, which is represented in the Palaearctic region by 14 spe cies. The species are very variable in colour and numerous varie ties have been described and named, but these are ignored in the present paper since they have no true taxonomic status. Three species have been recorded from Spain (Strobl1899, 1906; Czerny and Strobl, 1909). Two of these are present in the material report ed upon. The family Chamaemyiidae is represented in the Palaearctic region by 9 genera and subgenera containing some 72 described species. There was much confusion in the determination of species until modern workers, notably Tanasijtshuk in the U.S.S.R., began biological studies coupled with detailed descriptions and illustra tions of the male genitalia. In the present author's opinion the genus Leucopis in particular should be regarded by Dipterists in the same way that Hymenopterists regard many Chalcidoidea, and descriptions or even determinations of some groups of species should be avoided unless reared series are available for study. The immature stages should be sought among colonies of Hemip tera-Homoptera of the families Aphididae, Adelgidae and Coccidae upon which the larvae are predaceous. Eleven species have previously been recorded from Spain of which 6 are present in the collections reported upon. The recorded species not present are Chamaemyia flavipalpis Haliday (= ma ritima Zetterstedt) and C. geniculata Zetterstedt (Strobl, 1900); Leucopis grise.ola Fallen, L.
