Preface ommercial aviation recently celebrated its first centennial. Over the more than 100 years since the first Ctake off, aviation has witnessed challenges and changes that have made it a critical component of mod- ern societies. Most importantly, air transport brings humans closer together, promoting peace and harmo- ny through connectivity and social exchange. A key role for Hermes Air Transport Organisation is to contribute to the development, progress and promo- tion of air transport at the global level. This would not be possible without knowing the history and evolu- tion of the industry. Once a luxury service, affordable to only a few, aviation has evolved to become accessible to billions of peo- ple. But how did this evolution occur? This book provides an updated timeline of the key moments of air transport. It is based on the first aviation history book Hermes published in 2014 in partnership with ICAO, ACI, CANSO & IATA. Vickers brochures and paragraph other material have always referred to the type as the ‘Vickers 1000’ but have confused the issue by showing a model of a military variant with ‘V1000’ as a fictional serial (see page 14). The Vickers internal type number was 1000, which, as with other types, was often abbreviated to ‘V.1000’ or ‘V1000’ in various non-Vickers publications but this was never an official designation. 12- Text and ‘Designated as the V1000 in its military guise’. There was no military 15 captions designation yet, the RAF variant would have been the type 1001 but had it been developed further, the type may have received a name, similar to the Valiant and other military types. Salary £20,000 Introduction Thank you for your interest in Brooklands Museum and the role of Collections and Archive Relocation Assistant. At the heart of everything we do at Brooklands is our vision, Inspiring people to shape their future through inventiveness, expertise and a sense of adventure. Throughout its history, Brooklands has been a place where the impossible is achieved. Brooklands Museum is located outside of Weybridge, Surrey and is set in 30 acres, which includes the most significant and complete sections of the former Race Track. The site includes a number of important historic buildings all of which have played a central part in Brooklands’ contribution to the development of motorsport and the aviation industry. Beyond our large object collection of aircraft, including Concorde, and an array of 1920s and 30s bespoke racing cars, we have an impressive archive of documents, drawings, photographs technical manuals, costumes, uniforms and art work. Our collection also includes a rich array of personal items that belonged to key personalities who raced cars, flew aircraft, who worked here at Brooklands – or even did all three. This unique collection helps brings the past to life through the individuals who dared to push the boundaries. An opportunity has arisen for a one-year fixed term contract in the Collections Department. You will play a crucial role in relocating our collections from our old archive to our new purpose-built store which has been funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund project, The Brooklands Aircraft Factory and Race Track Revival. -

It describes the difficulties of finding targets at night and in bad weather, in Germany, when the means of navigating were simply by “Dead Reckoning” aided when possible by Astro Navigation and Wireless Direction finding, the latter not available over occupied Europe. -

15 April 2019 Wing your way to Cosford for Open Cockpits Weekend Date: 22-23 June 2019 / Time: 10.00am-4.00pm / Cost: £13.50 per person The Royal Air Force Museum Cosford will be opening the doors to thirteen aircraft from its collection during a two day Open Cockpits Weekend on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 June. It’s the perfect opportunity for aviation fans and families with budding young pilots to get a closer look inside some of the historic aircraft on display and take to the flying controls whilst sitting in the pilot’s seat. Just 300 spaces per day are available for this exciting event which gives ticket holders up to six hours to explore everything from jet fighters to airliners, including aircraft from British, American and Russian Air Forces. The June event at Cosford will be themed around the Museum’s National Cold War Exhibition, the transport and training collection in Hangar 1 and a selection of aircraft outside in the Museum grounds. The popular Lockheed Hercules C130K Mk3 is guaranteed to be an event highlight. The C-130 Hercules has been a key component of the Royal Air Force’s frontline for over fifty years and continues to provide service to the present day. A familiar sight, at home and abroad, the Hercules can rightly claim to have been the ‘first in and last out’ in numerous campaigns and operations. As a tanker, and as a transport, it has delivered vital strategic and tactical mobility – providing the platform for the Royal Air Force’s operational capabilities, through the Cold War and beyond. -

Aviation & Motoring Achievements at Brooklands Opening of Brooklands Motor Course - the World's first purpose-built 17 June 1907 motor-racing circuit. 28/29 June 1907 S.F. Edge sets up a 1,581 mile 24 hour endurance record. 8 June 1908 A.V. Roe made first powered flight in Britain. 20 April 1908 First official motorcycle race held. May 1908 First women's motor race. Louis Paulban made the first public flight in Britain in a Henry Farman 29 October 1909 Biplane. 1910 First woman pilots' licence gained by Mrs. Hilda Hewlett. 1911 World's first flight ticket office. 1911 & 1912 Marconi's early wireless experiments. Percy Lambert, driving a 25 hp, 4.5 litre, Talbot set up a new World 14 February 1913 Speed Record covering 103.84 miles in an hour. Adolph Pegoud became the first man to loop-the-loop in Britain 25 September 1913 flying a Bleriot monoplane. Brooklands had now issued the highest number of pilots' licences August 1914 anywhere in Britain. Vickers Aviation began aircraft assembly at Brooklands - aircraft 18 March 1915 production continued on the same site until 1987. A Brooklands-built Vickers Vimy flown by Alcock and Brown made the 15 June 1919 first non-stop Transatlantic flight. A Brooklands-built Vickers Vimy made the first 10 December 1919 flight from England to Australia piloted by Ross and Keith Smith. Douglas Davidson became the first rider to exceed 100 mph in 28 April 1921 Britain, riding a Harley-Davidson. Kenelm Lee Guinness driving a V12 Sunbeam set the second and last 17 May 1922 World Land Speed Record established at Brooklands - 137.15 mph over one kilometre. -
VC10 Rebuild Is Now Complete
3 November 2015 VC10 rebuild is now complete After an eight month dismantling process, a 70 mile journey along the M6/M54 motorway and a four month rebuild, the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford is pleased to announce that its latest acquisition, VC10 serial number XR808 is now complete and on public display. The media, aviation fans and visitors alike have followed the aircrafts journey to Cosford every step of the way and the Museum is thrilled to see the aircraft fully reassembled and in its new display position next to the Lockheed Hercules C130K Mk3. The VC10 arrived at Cosford in June and was partially reassembled on the airfield at RAF Cosford before being moved onto the Museum’s site for completion. Since then the rear fuselage along with the outer wings, fin, tail plane and engines have all been carefully refitted onto the aircraft in the rebuild area directly outside the Museum’s Hangar 1. VC10 XR808 tail being fitted and engines back in the nacelles The VC10 was moved into its display position during mid-October and the final task of attaching the starboard outer wing was completed the following week. VC10 XR808 during its move into display position The VC10 was originally designed and built by Vickers-Armstrong and then later by the British Aircraft Corporation and entered service with Royal Air Force in 1966. This dual-role aircraft enabled the rapid deployment of troops and their weaponry and fast jet aircraft to many theatres of operations around the world and proved one of the RAF’s most significant assets for nearly 50 years. -
