6 Requesting the Division of Highways to name a stretch of highway on

7 West Virginia Route 62 from the New Haven corporate limit,

8 mile point 38.43 to the intersection of County Route 12, mile

9 point 44.57, in Mason County, West Virginia, the “Fields

10 Brothers Memorial Highway”.

11 WHEREAS, Franklin, David, Gerald, Bill, Ray, Glenn and Doc were

12 seven of nine sons of David and Laura Fields of Hartford in Mason

13 County, West Virginia, entered the military and served their

14 country in World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War; and

15 WHEREAS, Franklin Fields was born June 23, 1920, entered the

16 Navy and fought the Japanese on the Pacific during World War II.

17 Franklin was on Okinawa when Japan surrendered. Franklin also had

18 two sons, Eugene and Jack, who served in the Air Force; and

19 WHEREAS, David Fields Jr. was born January 15, 1922, entered

20 the Navy and fought in the Pacific. David’s first ship, USS PC 466,

21 sank. His second ship, USS Arthemis(AKA 21)was at the invasion of

22 Iwo Jima, and was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered; and

23 WHEREAS, Gerald Fields was born July 12, 1923, entered the Army

24 and served in Germany as an ambulance driver. Gerald received the

1 1 American Theater Ribbon, EAME Theater Ribbon w/2 Bronze Stars, Good

2 Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal World War II. He was in Germany

3 when Germany surrendered; and

4 WHEREAS, Claude ”Bill” Fields was born June 18, 1925, entered

5 the Navy and served in the Pacific during World War II. His ship,

6 USS , was hit by two planes. Bill

7 received the Pacific Theater Ribbon(6 Stars), American Theater

8 Ribbon, Victory Medal and Philippine Liberation Ribbon(2 Stars).

9 Claude was in Tokyo Bay when Japan surrendered. Bill’s son David

10 also served in Vietnam; and

11 WHEREAS, Floyd “Ray” Fields was born June 27, 1929, entered the

12 Army and served during the Korean War. Ray received the Occupation

13 Medal Germany; and

14 WHEREAS, Glenn Fields was born January 7, 1931, entered the Air

15 Force and served during all three supported operations during the

16 Korean War and also served during the Vietnam War. Glenn’s son

17 David also served in the Air Force. Glenn served his country for

18 over twenty years; and

19 WHEREAS, Wetzel “Doc” Fields was born May 3, 1933, and entered

20 the Air Force and served during the Korean War; and

21 WHEREAS, All of the seven brothers have passed on except for

22 Wetzel and Glenn Fields, it is fitting and proper, for their

23 dedicated pubic service to their country, state and community, that

24 this stretch of highway be named to memorialize the lives of the

2 1 Fields brothers; therefore, be it

2 Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

3 That the Legislature hereby requests the Division of Highways

4 to name a stretch of highway on West Virginia Route 62 from the New

5 Haven corporate limit, mile point 38.43 to the intersection of

6 County Route 12, mile point 44.57, in Mason County, West Virginia,

7 the “Fields Brother Memorial Highway”.

8 Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby

9 requested to have made and be placed sign identifying the highway

10 as the “Fields Brothers Memorial Highway”; and, be it

11 Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates to

12 forward a certified copy of this resolution to the Secretary of the

13 Department of Transportation, and Wetzel and Glenn Fields.
