Interactivity is not simply an inherent quality of art into life new media, it also relates to a crucial ethico-aesthetic premise informing decon- creativity structive art from Dada and Surrealism through radical art of the 1960s and installation art 1970s and into the present. The ethico-aesthetic premise in question concerns interactive art breaking down the barrier between the viewer and the work of art and bringing relational aesthetics art into life. More specifically the goal is to bring creativity into everyday life as an antidote to alienation and reification. Whereas new media art finds it rela- tively easy to devise art games that encourage creative involvement on the part of the viewer, fine art is severely hindered in its attempts in this direction by the traditional focus on the artist-genius and the transformation of the artistic prod- uct (whatever its material) into a precious object. It will be shown that creative games exist in fine art but they are for the most part designed by the artist for the artist. This is even the case with the most radical fine artists celebrated at the turn of the millennium such as Rirkrit Tiravanija who Nicolas Bourriaud put forward as a prime instance of so-called relational aesthetics.

    MARIAN GOODMAN GALLERY Infinite Jester On the occasion of his major retrospective at the Guggenheim, New York, from issue 94, 2005, Tom Morton on Maurizio Cattelan By Tom Morton (October 13, 2005) Maybe I’m just saying that we’re all corrupted in a way; life itself is corrupted, and that’s the way we like it.1 –Maurizio Cattelan In Philip Roth’s novel The Human Stain (2000) three anonymous men sit on a bench in the grounds of an American Liberal Arts college, debating the fall-out of the Monica Lewinsky affair. They’re brassy guys, with brassy manners, and one of them offers up the opinion that ‘If Clinton had fucked her in the ass, she might have shut her mouth. Had he turned her over in the Oval Office and fucked her in the ass, none of this would have happened.’2 His companions concur; yes, this would’ve been the President’s best course of action. After all: ‘You give somebody something they can’t talk about. Then you’ve got them. You involve them in a mutual transgression, and you have a mutual corruption.’3 Since the late 1980s Maurizio Cattelan has been making art that’s tough to talk about, or at least with much rigour or much candour. There’s plenty of noise made about Cattelan, sure (few of his contemporaries share his profile), but this is mostly composed of gasps of faux astonishment, or of a frenzied clapping that, while it applauds the artist’s work, also attempts to fend it off.

SPACE-ANIMALISM ,,E.A.G.L.E.”: FLY LIKE AN EAGLE) New Paintings, Sculptures and Works on Paper February 4 - March 27, 2021 David Nolan Gallery is pleased to present ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (DR. SPACE-ANIMALISM ,,E.A.G.L.E.”: FLY LIKE AN EAGLE), a selection of new paintings, sculptures and works on paper by Jonathan Meese. The exhibition marks the artist’s second collaboration with the gallery and his first show in New York in five years. These works were produced in the last 12 months in the midst of the global quarantine, apart from the social interactions of daily life. Greeted with isolation, the artist delves into a vocabulary both real and imaginary, armed with a rich arsenal of cultural references and a penchant for the fantastical. Meese invites the viewer, without prejudice or preconceived notion, into his dynamic, spectacular universe. Jonathan Meese was born in Tokyo in 1970 to a German mother and Welsh father. Together with his siblings and mother, Jonathan relocated shortly thereafter to Hamburg. He spent his childhood escaping into alternate worlds, surrounded by toys, comics, Star Trek, and mesmerized by cinema. Over some ten years, Harald Falckenberg has put together a collection of some 3,000 works spanning the 1960s to the present day, in a 4,000 square-metre disused factory on the outskirts of Hamburg. The main of the collection gathers significant artwork ensembles for a same artist, which are constantly being expanded with no restrictions as to the chosen materials, media or formats.
