“Consider the Source” A Resource Guide to Liberal, Conservative and Nonpartisan Periodicals 30 East Lake Street ∙ Chicago, IL 60601 HWC Library – Room 501 312.553.5760 ver heard the saying “consider the source” in response to something that was questioned? Well, the same advice applies to what you read – consider the source. When conducting research, bear in mind that periodicals (journals, magazines, newspapers) may have varying points-of-view, biases, and/or E political leanings. Here are some questions to ask when considering using a periodical source: Is there a bias in the publication or is it non-partisan? Who is the sponsor (publisher or benefactor) of the publication? What is the agenda of the sponsor – to simply share information or to influence social or political change? Some publications have specific political perspectives and outright state what they are, as in Dissent Magazine (self-described as “a magazine of the left”) or National Review’s boost of, “we give you the right view and back it up.” Still, there are other publications that do not clearly state their political leanings; but over time have been deemed as left- or right-leaning based on such factors as the points- of-view of their opinion columnists, the make-up of their editorial staff, and/or their endorsements of politicians. Many newspapers fall into this rather opaque category. A good rule of thumb to use in determining whether a publication is liberal or conservative has been provided by Media Research Center’s L. Brent Bozell III: “if the paper never met a conservative cause it didn’t like, it’s conservative, and if it never met a liberal cause it didn’t like, it’s liberal.” Outlined in the following pages is an annotated listing of publications that have been categorized as conservative, liberal, non-partisan and religious.

  • The State of the News: Texas
THE STATE OF THE NEWS: TEXAS GOOGLE’S NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE JOURNALISM INDUSTRY #SaveJournalism #SaveJournalism EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Antitrust investigators are finally focusing on the anticompetitive practices of Google. Both the Department of Justice and a coalition of attorneys general from 48 states and the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico now have the tech behemoth squarely in their sights. Yet, while Google’s dominance of the digital advertising marketplace is certainly on the agenda of investigators, it is not clear that the needs of one of the primary victims of that dominance—the journalism industry—are being considered. That must change and change quickly because Google is destroying the business model of the journalism industry. As Google has come to dominate the digital advertising marketplace, it has siphoned off advertising revenue that used to go to news publishers. The numbers are staggering. News publishers’ advertising revenue is down by nearly 50 percent over $120B the last seven years, to $14.3 billion, $100B while Google’s has nearly tripled $80B to $116.3 billion. If ad revenue for $60B news publishers declines in the $40B next seven years at the same rate $20B as the last seven, there will be $0B practically no ad revenue left and the journalism industry will likely 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 2018 disappear along with it. The revenue crisis has forced more than 1,700 newspapers to close or merge, the end of daily news coverage in 2,000 counties across the country, and the loss of nearly 40,000 jobs in America’s newsrooms.

Suncoast Weather Observer Winter 2009 Issue 1, Volume 14 Inside This Issue... Severe Thunderstorm Warning Hail Criteria Becomes More Meaningful 2009 Hurricane Season Summary Sea Fog: A Simple Tutorial NWS Ruskin Supports the American Cancer Society by Participating in Relay For Life NWS Ruskin Gives Back to the Community El Niño to Increase Possibility of Hazardous Weather in Florida this Winter NWS Ruskin to Host an Open House “Disponible en Español”...Spanish Services Keep on Growing SPECIAL FEATURE: January 2010 Cold Snap Severe Thunderstorm Warning Hail Criteria Becomes More Meaningful By: Daniel Noah Since January 5, 2010, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings across the nation are now issued for 1 inch or larger hail instead of the previous 3/4 inch or larger size hail. The wind criteria of 58 MPH (50 knots) did not change. Scientific research increasingly indicates that significant damage to real property does not occur until hail stones reach at least 1 inch in diameter. The results of these peer-reviewed articles are supported by damage reports from thousands of archived storm events. Many in the media and the emergency management community were concerned that too many Severe Thunderstorm Warnings were being issued for marginal events and these warnings were desensitizing the public. The new 1 inch criteria will reduce the number of Severe Thunderstorm Warnings each season and will warn for a genuine risk of damage and a corresponding need to take protective action. The 15 counties in west central and southwest Florida received 109 reports of 3/4 inch hail or larger over the past two years, and of these, only 35 hail reports were 1 inch or larger.

Egypt Daily Update: Trump Administration Reportedly Tables Brotherhood Terrorist Designation March 28, 2017 Trump Administration Reportedly Tables Brotherhood Terrorist Designation Parliament’s Human Rights Committee Discusses State Department Report Cartoon of the Day: Budget Top Stories Trump Administration Reportedly Tables Brotherhood Terrorist Designation According to a report from the Washington Times, the Trump administration is not currently considering moving forward with designating the Muslim Brotherhood as a foreign terrorist organization. The report is based on information from “U.S. officials close to [the] heated debate inside the administration over the status of the global Islamist movement.” The report adds, “While the White House has declined to comment publicly, officials speaking on condition of anonymity say the administration backed down from a plan to designate the Brotherhood last month after an internal State Department memo advised against it because of the movement’s loose-knit structure and far-flung political ties across the Middle East.” Numerous analysts and experts across the political spectrum, including outspoken Brotherhood critics, came out against the potential designation. This news comes as an Egyptian delegation, composed of a variety of public figures including current MPs, met with members of the American Coptic Association (ACA) in New York and New Jersey on Monday. According to delegation head Ahmed al-Fadaly, the group intends to lobby U.S. government officials and Members of Congress to designate the Muslim Brotherhood a Foreign Terrorist Organization. In other news, after discussing amendments to the 2013 protest law yesterday, Parliament postponed voting on the amendment due to the lack of a quorum.
