India, Iran JV in sanctions list, crude oil ferries hit New Delhi, Saturday, 10 July 2010 In a setback to THE Indian efforts to re-energise the relationship with Iran, a 35-year-old Indo- Iranian shipping joint venture, Iran-o-Hind, has been placed under sanctions in the latest UN Security Council Resolution 1929 on Iran. This is the only entity with Indian links included in the fresh round of sanctions. This has significant implications for transport of crude that India imports from Iran. India imports 12 per cent of its crude from Iran. Tankers from Iran-o-Hind, which has a fleet of eight vessels, were used for this purpose. Sources said now India would have to look for alternate ways to transport crude, engaging services of entities that have not been affected by the sanctions. India wants to resume talks with Iran on ‘Peace Pipeline’ New Delhi, Monday, 12 July 2010 After a two-year lull, India has proposed to resume talks with Iran on importing gas through a pipeline passing through Pakistan, but Iran wants the meeting to happen in Tehran. India, in April, proposed a meeting of the India-Iran Joint Working Group (JWG) between May 23 and 28 in New Delhi to discuss the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project, but Tehran has not yet confirmed the dates. -

India: Trade, Business and Human Rights Public Forum May 23, 2012 New York City Bar India: Remarks on a Story of Hope and Despair By Jaipat Singh Jain The story of India, as we know it, starts with a river deep in the Himalayas, called Indus. Long before the pyramids of Giza, before Mesopotamia, before the Mayan civilization – almost 10,000 years ago – there stood an enormously well-developed civilization on the banks of that river. We call it the Indus Valley Civilization. At its peak, it comprised of about 5 million people. For most of the modern times, however, the fact of the civilization was unknown to Western scholars. It was merely a subject of Indian religious scriptures, local stories and of myths. Then about a 100 years ago, its ruins were being dismantled to produce debris to lay the modern railways. Some archeologists objected. They found that Mohenjo-Daro, one of the uncovered parts of the Indus valley civilization, showed well-developed cities, with colleges, parks, communal baths, play grounds, language, arts, music, chariots, houses with kitchens, pottery and agriculture. The cities had sophisticated sewage system, with sewers large enough to walk in. All sewers were connected to city-wide drainage system. Each home had a latrine. I mention this because in today’s India, more than half of its people defecate in the open. Each city block had one or more water wells. Again, I mention this because today, almost 250 million Indians have to travel more than a quarter of a mile to get drinking water. -

Nathani Supervisor: Fredrik Sunnemark Bachelor’s thesis in Political Science 15 ECTS Department of Economics and Informatics University West Spring term 2016 1 2 Abstract This thesis aims to describe how Western tourist websites Represents India. Although there has been much research on Tourism and Western representation of India, no literature is available on how Western tourist websites Represents India. This thesis uses three theories, Social Constructivism, Post-Colonial Theory, and Representation Theory. Social Constructivism is the base for this thesis. Post-Colonial Theory is used to find out whether the representation of India includes colonial stereotypes or no. Moreover, the Representation Theory is the center and the main tool to know and explain how Western tourist websites Represents India. The design used is a ‘case study’ as case study design is compatible to explore the representations of India. The method used is a ‘qualitative discourse analysis’ which helps to provide a critical analysis of the description of India. Main results of this thesis are that Western tourist websites describe Indian economy as a backward economy. It is unclear whether Indian politics is described as undemocratic or democratic. Indian people are described as a mix of traditional, modern, unfree as well as free people. Indian culture is described as ancient and collective. He was a librarian, a learned librarian, who looked out on the teeming city of Calcutta from the perspective of Roman antiquity and Victorian morality. Before him, spread out on a table, lay a huge sheet of paper divided into sixteen columns. Behind him, in endless rows of shelves, were books, a huge harvest of books from Bengal in the year 1879. Lawler’s job was to fill in the columns. The first columns posed no problem. This group of people, called the Aryans, brought with them their beliefs, customs, and writing system (Sanskrit). They introduced a rigid caste structure that divided people into four classes. 2 Under this setup, Brahmins or priests made up the highest caste. They held a tremendous amount of power over everybody else. They were the only ones who could both study and teach the holy texts, known as the Vedas. They were also the only ones who could perform sacrifices and other religious rites. Because of their authority, people of other castes often gave them generous donations. By giving Brahmins (also spelled as Brahmans) valuable goods, people of other castes believed that they would be rewarded in their next life. 3 Next to the Brahmin class was the Kshatriya (pronounced "shuh-TREE-uh") class. It consisted of warriors and rulers. Kshatriyas' main duties were to govern and defend the country. Though they could learn the Vedas as Brahmins did, they could not teach the holy texts. -

BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE ARABIAN PENINSULA J.E. Peterson Prefatory Note: This bibliography concentrates on citations relating to the Arabian Peninsula that I have collected over some three decades. Items have been published in various Western languages as well as Arabic. This is very much a work in progress and cannot be considered complete. Similarly, presentation of the bibliography here in the present format should be regarded as an interim effort despite its imperfections. A number of older citations have yet to be transferred from notecards to the database on which this bibliography is based. Some items are unpublished, other citations are not complete (typically lacking volume details and page numbers for periodical citations). Shorter articles and those of a more transitory nature, i.e. newspaper and newsletter articles, have been excluded. I have not been able to examine all the items and therefore undoubtedly there are many mistakes in citations and inevitably some items have been included that do not actually exist. The bibliography is in simple and rough alphabetical order according to author only because I have had no opportunity to rearrange by subject. Alphabetization was done automatically within the original database and idiosyncrasies in the database regarding non-English diacritical marks may make alphabetization somewhat irregular. For similar reasons, the order in which entries by the same author are listed may also be irregular. The subjects reflect my own interests and therefore range from history through the social sciences and international affairs. Generally speaking, archaeology, the arts, the physical sciences, and many areas of culture, inter alia, have not been included.
