“It was, you might say, satisfactory.” A week can make a lot of difference; when I began thinking about writing December on something other than poetry, Donald Trump might have been getting a 2020 / second term and there seemed little hope on the vaccine front as CV19 January ripped across our continent again. Today, then, everything seems a lot 2021 more satisfactory, and hopefully things will have improved further by the time you read this, though time -lags are always dangerous. Christmas, then, may be a time of looking forward with some hope, even though so much has been lost. It will certainly not be satisfactory if your business closes or does not return, or you lose your job. (As I write the Church is likely to make a number of clergy redundant!) Eliot’s great poem (The Journey of the Magi) has the Eastern kings making their way from their opulent palaces with their silken girls through the sand dunes of Arabia to the “uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor” (the Christ child). The end of all their searching is said to be “satisfactory”. It’s a bit like someone describing their holiday of a lifetime to an exotic foreign location as “ok”! Yet “satisfactory”, in Eliot’s brilliant mind, has a double meaning. They have found what they were looking for and yet in surroundings less than auspicious, just about satisfactory, you might say. Yet this satisfaction also affords a deep inner contentment as they have discovered a new meaning in their lives and are no longer content with the old dispensation. Perhaps as we begin to return to normality in 2021 we will in turn begin to rethink our priorities, to reset our inner compasses, to begin collectively to redefine what society might be, and how we might accommodate Sponsored by ______better the non -human world, and indeed the planet itself. CHARGES WAIVED - UPDATE FROM THE MEMO COMMITTEE.

In March, the committee looked at how The MEMO could continue safely in light of the Covid pandemic. Door to door deliveries were suspended, and printed copies left at shops in Langwathby and Melmerby and an online copy created at www.midedenmemo.org.uk and on Facebook. Thanks to a small surplus, we were also able to suspend our charges for advertising – a small help to our communities.

The committee decided to review these decisions after six months and after careful consideration of finances and feedback the committee have agreed to continue this approach until March 2021. We would like to thank the individuals and businesses who have been able to donate to The MEMO. Our ability to support our communities and local businesses by waiving charges will continue to be dependent on these donations. Please get in touch if you can help.

Please all stay safe - “Hands Face Space” Page 3

MEMO AGM

The MEMO AGM will be held on Monday 1st February 2021 at 7.30pm. Depending on COVID restrictions in place, which we will review closer to the date, we will either hold this as a socially distanced meeting in Langwathby Village Hall or we will hold it as an online video conference. All welcome to attend and have your say about how you'd like your community magazine run or to talk to us about volunteering your help with the production of the MEMO.

If you think you will be interested in attending could you please contact Chris Forrester on [email protected] or 01768 881015 and he will ensure you are contacted with final arrangements.

SUPPORT DURING THE CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

As is the case in communities across the country the Eden Valley has been no exception in responding to the challenges faced by the coronavirus pandemic. People have been coming together and supporting each other during this difficult time. In addition to families, neighbours and friends supporting one another a range of support groups, networks and services have been established in our communities to provide that extra bit of help, especially for the vulnerable, lonely and isolated.

Often these groups/networks have been established through parish councils and may relate to their Emergency Plans but other people have also come forward to offer/coordinate support arrangements. Sometimes a list of people believed to be isolated or vulnerable may have been drawn up through local knowledge so that contact can be made or maintained. Groups have employed differing ways for establishing contacts e.g. via ‘Help Cards’, websites, Facebook, emails, adverts in local papers and newsletters.

Below is a list giving details of some groups, networks, and contacts in communities covered by the Mid Eden Memo’s distribution area. Arrangements in each village community may vary. However generally the services on offer are likely to include the following types of help : -

> collecting and delivering essential food shopping or other urgent supplies

> collection of medications/prescriptions

> posting of mail

> offering a friendly chat

Other types of service may also include things like dog walking or plant and seed exchanges. Arrangements have also been made in some cases with some local food producers/retailers which can be delivered to central points in a village such as a village hall. The list may not represent the totality of the local support on offer but it gives details of at least some and key contacts. Page 5

Page 12 MELMERBY HALL

Eleanor Gardner, née Burton, spent some of her formative years in Melmerby and in 1935 was Rose Queen there. She lived for a few years in Melmerby Hall. We are grateful to her for letting us share her recollections of that time.

came to live in Melmerby in 1928 and lived on the end of Bridge Terrace. The end of the house had been a shop at one time. I That room had a stone floor and when my father butchered a pig, which was once a year, the sides were put down on straw and salted to turn into bacon. This butchering for private consumption had to stop when we were at war because of rationing but I know the odd pig was butchered illegally for the local farmers.

Melmerby Hall was never occupied as far as I can remember as we children would play down the woods, which we knew as Rectory Dell, and look through the windows.

I don’t know who owned it but Mrs Parker, who lived in Skirwith Abbey, came to live there and asked my mother if we would live in the old part as caretakers.

We went there on 26th July 1937. It was exciting for us as we now had electricity, running hot water and a proper bathroom. The lawns were kept in good condition by Johnny Cook who lived next door to us at Bridge Terrace and ran a taxi service from Melmerby to Penrith. He took Mrs Parker to church at Skirwith every Sunday morning and also for Midnight Service on Christmas Eve.

Mrs Parker’s front of the house was full of antiques, large dressers, wooden armchairs, and so much copper and pewter that mother had to help clean it all. It was said that her four -poster bed was going to a London Museum. It was just like a stately home. I used to sneak through when she was out, and go into the drawing room to play on the grand piano.

The second floor of the old part was one big bedroom with two windows, then the bedroom with the six panes had a crest on the wall; Page 13 it also had a window seat which had to be repaired and many old coins were found in there. There was a cupboard in the corner and if you climbed up the shelves you came to a place to hide. What that would be used for and when I don’t know!

It was felt there was a ghostly presence in the house but it didn’t frighten us. People who slept in that big bedroom (me included) would wake up in the middle of the night and just have to get out but we didn’t feel in any danger. My father felt the presence in the bath one night.

One Christmas Eve Mrs Parker had gone to Midnight Mass and we were allowed to stay up. Her end of the Hall had mostly stained floors and at midnight we heard footsteps go past the adjoining door. My mother almost had a heart attack as she thought she had left the front door unlocked and hurried to make Mrs Parker her drink. There was absolutely no -one in the house. That was a bit frightening as we all heard it.

On September 1st 1939 mother had to go to the school and was asked to take evacuees —3 girls and 1 adult —as we had the accommodation. They came from Newcastle and were joined by another sister the following week. Her pay was £2.16.0 per week [equivalent to about £142 now]. It was hard work with all that house to look after, no mod -cons, and us all having to go home for dinner. There was rationing and all the bread etc was home -made, washing done with the dolly tub, posser and wooden mangle.

We as children had a wonderful time as the ground floor rooms were empty and great as play -rooms. We would produce concerts, charge our friends a halfpenny [about 27p now] and they would get a sweet at half time.

In 1940 I was 14 so had to go out to work and was pleased to be honoured by being employed at Dalemain Mansion as kitchen maid.

Mrs Parker died and Melmerby Hall was taken over by the government to house a Belgian School. My parents moved away and later the Tank Regiment from Lowther was in the Hall: the tanks would come rumbling through Langwathby at all hours. Page 14

A brief pageant of English verse

I won’t arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,

I’ll sanitize the doorknob and make a cup of tea. I won’t go down to the sea again; I won’t go out at all, I’ll wander lonely as a cloud from the kitchen to the hall. There’s a green -eyed yellow monster to the north of Katmandu But I shan’t be seeing him just yet and nor, I think, will you. While the dawn comes up like thunder on the road to Mandalay I’ll make my bit of supper and eat it off a tray. I shall not speed my bonnie boat across the sea to Skye Or take the rolling English road from Birmingham to Rye. About the woodland, just right now, I am not free to go To see the Keep Out posters or the cherry hung with snow, And no, I won’t be travelling much, within the realms of gold, Or get me to Milford Haven. All that’s been put on hold. Give me your hands, I shan’t request, albeit we are friends Nor come within a mile of you, until this trial ends. John Doidge -Harrison

A CUMBRIAN CHRISTMAS

A Cumbrian Christmas what will it bring, will churches be open to welcome the King?

Can Santa still mingle sanitizer in hand to bring joy to the children all over our land?

Will we see family on this Christmas day, or turkey for one laid out on a tray?

I’ll be optimistic, I usually am, I’ll wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year if the virus finally SCRAMS! Kath Holmes Page 15

Isolation Blues

There I was in isolation, not just me but all the nation, Trying to keep a happy face on: call it the Isolation Blues.

I’ve washed my hands till they are sore each time I touch a switch or door; If I’m told to stay safe just once more, I’ve got the Isolation Blues!

Morning post comes through the door; doing puzzles by the score; I’ve even wiped the kitchen floor! Got the Isolation Blues.

Facebook, Skype can be for me —I’m not too bad at technology —and I’m pretty good at making tea with Isolation Blues.

Shopping, meeting, casual chat —who’d have thought we’d lose all that? It’s bound to leave us feeling flat, this Isolation Blues.

I really have no cause to moan with friends and neighbours on the phone: My heart goes out to those alone with Isolation Blues.

I count my blessings every day coronavirus is kept at bay: So please help others in any way with Isolation Blues.

The Christingle Service at St Peter's, Langwathby

This annual fundraiser for the work of the Children's Society has been a great part of our community's celebration of Christmas.

Sadly we can't hold services this year, but the Mission Community has come up with a cunning plan to find a way to share Christingle.

Teams across the Eden Valley are making up packs with all you need to make a Christingle candle. They will be distributed via schools in the area and the hope is that families will make them and light them to put in windows on Christmas Eve.

There will be a Zoom service at 4 pm on Christmas Eve, details of which will be included in the Christingle pack.

We hope you like this idea to light up the villages in the Eden Valley in this way and you will join us in Christingle.
