Chassanoff: Historians’ Experiences Using Digitized Archival Photographs as Evidence (Under the direction of Christopher A. Lee) Widespread digitization has presented scholars with unprecedented access to archival sources. In particular, the availability of archival photographs through online collections has been championed as an opportunity to fill in underrepresented histories absent from archival collections. Yet the degree to which scholars are using digital visual sources, and how they are using them, is relatively unexplored in the literature. In part, this can be attributed to the difficulties of modeling visual information use; no empirical models currently link scholarly interpretive practices to how scholars actually use visual materials. This dissertation sought to address these gaps in the literature by examining the experiences of one group – self-identified historians using digitized archival photographs as evidence in their scholarly activities. This study uses an embedded case study approach to explore how and why historians use images in the construction of their arguments. Fifteen participants were recruited during the spring and summer of 2015. I conducted semi-structured interviews with each participant, eliciting descriptions about their image practices and specific experiences related to image use. I used thematic analysis and thematic synthesis to reveal salient aspects of historians’ experiences as they interpret and decide to use (or not use) materials. To strengthen and verify the analysis, I used triangulation strategies at different stages in the study. The results of this exploratory research can be used to inform designs for archival description and access, and to provide guidance for historical image use. In particular, my iii findings disclose the various factors that matter to historians in their experiences interacting with archival photographs in digital environments. Examples of image use are largely absent from the historical literature; the case studies presented in this research help to illustrate the functional ways historians currently use digitized photographs in both research and instructional capacities. Each case also sheds light on the processes and practices historians employ as they construct evidence from photographs and supplementary materials. This research also makes important theoretical contributions to the LIS literature. While there has been unquestionable growth in access to digital sources, few empirical studies have examined scholarly interactions with digitized archival materials. Toward that end, this study introduces a conceptual framework for exploring how and why historians use digitized photographs. It presents a holistic methodology that focuses attention on information experiences as spaces for meaning-making in digital environments. Life and Labor: The Photographs of Milton Rogovin comprises thirty-eight black-and-white photographs by the self-proclaimed social documentary photographer. Rogovin photographed “the forgotten ones,” as he called them, including people from working class neighborhoods and multi-ethnic communities. Drawn entirely from the permanent collection of the San Jose Museum of Art, this exhibition presents photographs from three series: “Lower West Side, Buffalo” “Working People” and “Family of Miners” Life and Labor marks the public debut of these photographs, which were given to the Museum’s collection in 2011. Rogovin shed light on important social issues of the time: the plight of miners, the decline of the steel industry in upstate New York, and the everyday struggles of the poor and working class in Buffalo, New York, where he lived. While working as an optometrist in the 1930s, he was distressed by the widespread poverty caused by the Great Depression and became increasingly involved in leftist political causes. He began attending classes at the New York Workers School and reading the Communist newspaper The Daily Worker. He was influenced by the social- documentary photographs of Jacob Riis and Lewis Hine. In 1957, with the prevalence of cold war anti-Communism in the United States, Rogovin was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee, but refused to testify.

This project employs sources freely available online to create a historical geodatabase of the A Line of the Mexican National Railroad circa 1910. The project utilizes satellite imagery, census data, historical maps, train schedules along with postcards and photography from the period, to reconstruct the rail line and its stations shortly before the Mexican Revolution. These sources are combined in a GIS to create a highly accurate map and associated historical database of the system as it existed in the first decade of the 20th Century. The database suggests the potential of future scholarship combining GIS software, satellite imagery, and online source materials.

    Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Past Looking: Using Arts as Historical Evidence in Teaching History Yonghee Suh Old Dominion University This is a comparative case study of how three high school history teachers in the U.S.A. use art in their practice. The following research question was investigated: How do secondary history teachers incorporate the arts—paintings, music, poems, novels, and films—in their teaching of history and why? Data were collected from three sources: interviews, observations, and classroom materials. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data. Findings suggest these teachers use the arts as historical evidence roughly for three purposes: First, to teach the spirit of an age; second, to teach the history of ordinary people invisible in official historical records; and third, to teach, both with and without art, the process of writing history. Two of the three teachers, however, failed to teach historical thinking skills through art. Keywords: history, history instruction, art, interdisciplinary approach, thinking skills, primary sources. Introduction Encouraging historical thinking in students is not a new idea in history education. Since the turn of the 20th century, many historians and history educators have argued that history consists of not only facts, but also historians’ interpretation of those facts, commonly known as the process of historical thinking, or how to analyze and interpret historical evidence, make historical arguments, and engage in historical debates (Bain, 2005; Holt, 1990; VanSledright; 2002; Wineburg, 2001). Many past reform efforts in history education have shared this commitment to teach students to think historically, in part by being engaged in the process of historical inquiry (Bradley Commission on History in Schools, 1988; National Center for History in the Schools, 1995).

This “visual rhetoric” was instrumental in the passage of the Fair Labor and Standards Act with its child labor provisions.[1] One of the foremost visual storytellers of the time was Lewis Wickes Hine. Newspaper editor Arthur Brisbane said to the Syracuse Advertising Men's Club, in March 1911, "Use a picture. It's worth a thousand words."[2] He could have been speaking about Lewis Hine, whose images were already speaking volumes by then. Lewis Hine was born in Wisconsin in 1874, he studied sociology at the University of Chicago, Columbia University and New York University, becoming a teacher at the Ethical Culture School in New York.[3] Lewis left his position with the school in 1908 when he was hired as a photographer by the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). Years later, Owen Lovejoy, the northern regional leader of the NCLC, wrote to Mr. Hine stating, "In my judgment the work you did under my direction for the National Child Labor Committee was more responsible than any or all other efforts to bring the facts and conditions of child employment to public attention."[4] Mr. Lovejoy was acknowledging the visual medium of photography as Hatz 2 evidence and the power of a visual image to persuade, inform, and move people when words alone had proven inadequate Lewis Hine was creating the rules and procedures of Documentary Photography as he took thousands of images to influence change in the child labor movement.

    Indexing it all: The Modern Documentary Subsuming of the Subject and its Mediation of the Real Ronald E. Day1 1 Department of Information and Library Science, School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University Abstract This paper summarizes some of the themes of my forthcoming book, Indexing it All: The Subject in the Age of Documentation, Information, and Data (forthcoming, MIT Press). The paper presents research on the history and theory of the modern documentary tradition in the 20th and into the 21st centuries, which it views as an episteme with three dominant moments: European Documentation, Information Science and Data Science. In this paper, European Documentation, citation analysis, social computing, android robotics, and social big data are discussed as cases in the dialectical movement of this tradition. Each stage of this development represents higher levels in the subsumption of human agents and texts within increasingly abstract documentary forms of representation. Documentary indexing and indexicality have been major and increasing sources for the social positioning of persons in modernity, with consequences for personal and social psychologies, politics, and for critique and judgment. The story of the modern documentary tradition is a story of the role of indexing (personal, social, and textual positioning through documentary techniques and technologies) and indexicality (the modes of documentary citation and reference that result in such), and how this has shaped and continues to shape what Suzanne Briet termed, “homo documentator” (Briet, 2006).
