LATEST OLIGOCENE THROUGH EARLY MIOCENE ISOTOPIC STRATIGRAPHY AND DEEP-WATER PALEOCEANOGRAPHY OF THE WESTERN EQUATORIAL ATLANTIC: SITES 926 AND 9291 B.P. Flower,2 J.C. Zachos,2 and E. Martin3 ABSTRACT Stable isotopic (d18O and d13C) and strontium isotopic (87Sr/86Sr) data generated from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 926 and 929 on Ceara Rise provide a detailed chemostratigraphy for the latest Oligocene through early Miocene of the western Equatorial Atlantic. Oxygen isotopic data based on the benthic foraminifer Cibicidoides mundulus exhibit four distinct d18O excursions of more than 0.5ä, including event Mi1 near the Oligocene/Miocene boundary from 23.9 to 22.9 Ma and increases at about 21.5, 18 and 16.5 Ma, probably reßecting episodes of early Miocene Antarctic glaciation events (Mi1a, Mi1b, and Mi2). Carbon isotopic data exhibit well-known d13C increases near the Oligocene/Miocene boundary (~23.8 to 22.6 Ma) and near the early/middle Miocene boundary (~17.5 to 16 Ma). Strontium isotopic data reveal an unconformity in the Hole 926A sequence at about 304 meters below sea ßoor (mbsf); no such unconformity is observed at Site 929. The age of the unconfor- mity is estimated as 17.9 to 16.3 Ma based on a magnetostratigraphic calibration of the 87Sr/86Sr seawater curve, and as 17.4 to 15.8 Ma based on a biostratigraphic calibration. Shipboard biostratigraphic data are more consistent with the biostratigraphic calibration. -

Box 50007, SE-104 05 Stockholm, Sweden; e-mail: [email protected] Manuscript received: October 2000; accepted: January 2002 ^ Abstract This paper discusses the faunal content, the mammal biostratigraphy, and the environmental ecology of three important con tinental Tertiary vertebrate faunas from the Lower Rhine Embayment. The sites investigated are Rott (MP 30, Late Oligocene), Hambach 6C (MN 5, Middle Miocene), Frechen and Hambach 11 (both MN 16, Late Pliocene). Comparative analysis of the entire faunas shows the assemblages to exhibit many conformities in their general composition, presumably re sulting from their preference for wet lowlands. It appears that very similar environmental conditions for vertebrates reoc- curred during at least 20 Ma although the sites are located in a tectonically active region with high subsidence rates. Differ ences in the faunal composition are partly due to local differences in the depositional environment of the sites: lake deposits at the margin of the embayment (Rott), coal swamp and estuarine conditions in the centre of the embayment (Hambach 6C), and flood plain environments with small rivulets (Frechen and Hambach 1 l).The composition of the faunal assemblages (di versity and taxonomy) also documents faunal turnovers with extinctions and immigrations (Oligocene/Miocene and post- Middle Miocene), as a result of changing climate conditions. Additional vertebrate faunal data were retrieved from two new assemblages collected from younger strata at the Hambach mine (Hambach 11C and 14). -

Es gelang der erste Nachweis der Gelocidae Paragelocus und Pseudogelocus und einer Vielfalt von Boviden des Ober-Oligozäns in Asien. Pseudogelocus mongolicus n. sp. wird neu beschrieben. Palaeogene Marine Stratigraphy in China
LETHAIA REVIEW Palaeogene marine stratigraphy in China XIAOQIAO WAN, TIAN JIANG, YIYI ZHANG, DANGPENG XI AND GUOBIAO LI Wan, X., Jiang, T., Zhang, Y., Xi, D. & Li G. 2014: Palaeogene marine stratigraphy in China. Lethaia, Vol. 47, pp. 297–308. Palaeogene deposits are widespread in China and are potential sequences for locating stage boundaries. Most strata are non-marine origin, but marine sediments are well exposed in Tibet, the Tarim Basin of Xinjiang, and the continental margin of East China Sea. Among them, the Tibetan Tethys can be recognized as a dominant marine area, including the Indian-margin strata of the northern Tethys Himalaya and Asian- margin strata of the Gangdese forearc basin. Continuous sequences are preserved in the Gamba–Tingri Basin of the north margin of the Indian Plate, where the Palaeogene sequence is divided into the Jidula, Zongpu, Zhepure and Zongpubei formations. Here, the marine sequence ranges from Danian to middle Priabonian (66–35 ma), and the stage boundaries are identified mostly by larger foraminiferal assemblages. The Paleocene/Eocene boundary is found between the Zongpu and Zhepure forma- tions. The uppermost marine beds are from the top of the Zongpubei Formation (~35 ma), marking the end of Indian and Asian collision. In addition, the marine beds crop out along both sides of the Yarlong Zangbo Suture, where they show a deeper marine facies, yielding rich radiolarian fossils of Paleocene and Eocene. The Tarim Basin of Xinjiang is another important area of marine deposition. Here, marine Palae- ogene strata are well exposed in the Southwest Tarim Depression and Kuqa Depres- sion. -

The section covers almost the entire Lutetian and ranges into the Priabonian. It is part of the Helvetic (tectonic) Unit and represents the sedimentary processes that took place on the southern shelf to upper bathyal of the European platform at that time. Six lithologic units occur in the Adelholzen-Section: 1) marly, glauconitic sands with predominantly Assilina, 2) marly bioclastic sands with predominantly Nummulites, 3) glauconitic sands, 4) marls with Discocyclina, 5) marly brown sand. These units were combined as “Adelholzener Schichten” and can be allocated to the Kressenberg Formation. -

Unter ihre Fauna, das ist hier beschreibt, sind die Carnivoren besonders interessant, mit die vollständigste bekannten Exemplaren von Percrocuta miocenica und von eine primitiv Hyänen-Art, von welche ein neue Unterart, Protictitherium intermedium paralium, beschreibt ist. Die Fauna stark gleicht die von mehrere anderen Mittelmiozän Lagerstatten in derselben Gebiet: Çandir, Paşalar und Inönü in Türkei, und Prebreza in Serbien, und sie mussen sich allen zu dieselben Mammal-Zone gehören. Seinen Huftieren bezeugen ein offenes Umwelt, das bei der Türko-Balkanisch Gebiet in Serravallien Zeit verbreiten mussten. -
