Forster and Mrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, the two authors illwninate their portrayal ofearly twentieth-century London and its rising modernity with oceanic metaphors. My research in history, cultural studies, literary criticism, and psychoanalytic theory aimed to discover why and to what end Forster and Woolf would choose this particular image for the metropolis itselfand for social interactions within it. Context of the Problem: My interpretation of the oceanic metaphor in the novels stems from the views of particular theorists and writers in urban psychology and sociology (Anthony Vidler, Georg Simmel, Jack London) and in psychoanalysis (Sigmund Freud, particularly in his correspondence with writer Romain Rolland). These scholars provide descriptions ofthe oceanic in varying manners, yet reflect the overall trend in the period to characterizing life experience, and particularly experiences in the city, through images and metaphors ofthe sea. Methods and Procedures: The research for this project entailed reading a wide range ofhistorically-specific background regatg ¥9fSter, W661f~ eity of I .Q~e various academic areas listed above in order to frame my conclusions about the novels appropriately. -

The Great War had destroyed traditional models of heroism for twenties intellectuals such as Ernest Hemingway, Edmund Wilson, Malcolm Cowley, E. E. Cummings, Hart Crane, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and John Dos Passos, compelling them to create a new understanding of what I call the “heroic self.” Through a modernist, experience based, epistemology these writers deemed that the relationship between the heroic individual and the world consisted of a dialectical tension between irony and romance. The ironic interpretation, the view that the world is an antagonistic force out to suppress individual vitality, drove these intellectuals to adopt the Freudian conception of heroism as a revolt against social oppression. The Lost Generation rebelled against these pernicious forces which they believed existed in the forms of militarism, patriotism, progressivism, and absolutism. The -

Off the Pedestal; On the Stage Animation and De-animation in Art and Theatre Aura Satz Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London PhD in Fine Art 2002 Abstract Whereas most genealogies of the puppet invariably conclude with robots and androids, this dissertation explores an alternative narrative. Here the inanimate object, first perceived either miraculously or idolatrously to come to life, is then observed as something that the live actor can aspire to, not necessarily the end-result of an ever evolving technological accomplishment. This research project examines a fundamental oscillation between the perception of inanimate images as coming alive, and the converse experience of human actors becoming inanimate images, whilst interrogating how this might articulate, substantiate or defy belief. Chapters i and 2 consider the literary documentation of objects miraculously coming to life, informed by the theology of incarnation and resurrection in Early Christianity, Byzantium and the Middle Ages. This includes examinations of icons, relics, incorrupt cadavers, and articulated crucifixes. Their use in ritual gradually leads on to the birth of a Christian theatre, its use of inanimate figures intermingling with live actors, and the practice of tableaux vivants, live human figures emulating the stillness of a statue. The remaining chapters focus on cultural phenomena that internalise the inanimate object’s immobility or strange movement quality. Chapter 3 studies secular tableaux vivants from the late eighteenth century onwards. Chapter 4 explores puppets-automata, with particular emphasis on Kempelen's Chess-player and the physical relation between object-manipulator and manipulated-object. The main emphasis is a choreographic one, on the ways in which live movement can translate into inanimate hardness, and how this form of movement can then be appropriated. -

Scholarship on the printed word has abundantly recognized that, far from URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1036861ar being dead, Anon remained very much alive in Britain through the end of the DOI: https://doi.org/10.7202/1036861ar nineteenth century. Even in the twentieth century, Anon lived on, among particular groups and particular genres, yet little scholarship has addressed this endurance. Here, after defining anonymity and sketching its history in the See table of contents late nineteenth and early twentieth century, I offer three findings. First, women had less need for anonymity as they gained civil protections elsewhere, but anonymity still appealed to writers made vulnerable by their marginalized Publisher(s) identities or risky views. Second, in the early twentieth century the genre most likely to go unsigned was autobiography, in all its forms. Third, on rare Groupe de recherches et d’études sur le livre au Québec occasions, which I enumerate, strict anonymity achieves what pseudonymity cannot. I conclude by suggesting that among British modernist authors, the ISSN decline of practiced anonymity stimulated desired anonymity and the prizing 1920-602X (digital) of anonymity as an aesthetic ideal. -

van wyck brooks and the progressive frame of mind peter w. dowel I It has long been recognized that Van Wyck Brooks's America's Coming-of-Age (1915) and its companion piece Letters and Leadership (1918) captured the insurgent mood of a young generation of intellec tuals who themselves came of age with an outburst of critical and artistic activity in the years just prior to America's entry into World War I.1 To those of his contemporaries espousing a literature in touch with the wellsprings of modern American life, Brooks gave, as one of them put it, "an afflatus inchoate, vague, sentimental," but one that brought vital energy and creative focus to their cause.2 Although his demand for a truly national literature growing out of a healthy national culture was hardly new, harking back to Emerson and Whitman among others, Brooks's vigorous restatement of this theme expressed particularly the concerns of the present moment: a belief in self-expression as an ideal of personal growth and the basis for a flourishing artistic tradition; a sense of social responsibility, often tinged by some form of political radicalism; an emphasis on freedom, experiment and creativity in all phases of the national life, and especially a youthful rejection of all that smacked of the "old America." The diverse ideas and interests of Randolph Bourne, Floyd Dell, Max Eastman, Waldo Frank, Walter Lippmann, John Reed, Paul Rosenfeld and Harold Stearns, to name but a few, indelibly stamped what Brooks called "the newness." Having come into their own at the high-water mark of the Progressive era, these young men felt that the current reform agitation had fallen far short of creating a new social and cultural order. -

Some months ago, “A symposium by and for intellectual workers held under the auspices of the League of Professional Groups for Foster and Ford” was held at Cooper Union. The hall was so packed with young people who wished to hear those whom Earl Browder, an official of the Communist party, termed the cream of the American intellectuals," that almost a thousand were turned away at the door. " Why we vote Communist " was the subject of the speeches. It will be illuminating to recall them. Malcolm Cowley, a young poet and critic and one of the editors of the New Republic, said briefly that capitalism does not preserve culture and would eventually destroy all culture, so as a critic and poet he would vote Communist because Communism upheld the tradition of culture so dear to his Harvard and New Republic heart. James Rorty, a poet, said he was voting Communist because he didn’t want to be a hesitant, doubtful poet like Archibald MacLeish, who wore a top hat, by the way, and because he, James, was having such a lively time, such valuable experiences, and because he didn’t even have to stop writing poetry while he soap-boxed for the Communist party. -

1 ‘Idiotic admonitions and unwanted counsels’: Virginia Woolf’s spat with Life and Letters Jane Goldman, University of Glasgow, July 2007 [email protected] Abstract: Reviewing Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own for Life and Letters, Peter Quennell draws attention to where he himself is cited in Woolf’s text with reference to an earlier (anonymous) review he wrote for Life and Letters on women novelists. He takes the opportunity to identify (by his initials at least) and defend himself. In exploring this heated exchange, a concrete example of the dialogism of Woolf’s text, this paper examines the gender politics of the quarrel and the key rhetorical tropes that both sides engage, arguing that the figurative terms employed in Life and Letter’s critique of women’s writing (canine and feline metaphors) were the common cultural currency of anti-feminism and a significant focus for Woolf’s revisionary feminist aesthetics in A Room of One’s Own and beyond. Woolf’s spat with Life and Letters fuels her further revisionary feminist canine troping. Part 1 of this paper introduces Life and Letters; Part 2 is on its editor Desmond MacCarthy and Woolf ; Part 3 its reviewer, Peter Quennell and Woolf.
