BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE Max Bluestone 1926 - 1981 (Ph.D. Harvard University, 1959) became an associate professor of English at the University of Massachusetts Boston in 1965 as a member of the university’s University of Massachusetts Boston University Archives and Special Collections Finding Aid Collection: SC-0031 BLUESTONE founding faculty. Through his committee work, Bluestone was directly involved in policy decisions that concerned not only the English department but also the university as a whole. Bluestone was a member of the following committees: Chancellor of College II and University President searches, New Concepts & Departures, Division of Humanities Personnel, In-Town Site Proposal (chair), Faculty Senate, and Chancellor’s Representative to Inter-University Evaluation of Title I Programs in the Boston Public Schools. Bluestone served on the following English Department committees: Major Program Committee, Executive Committee, Personnel Committee, Recruiting Committee, Plagiarism Committee, and Freshman-Sophomore Program Committee. From 1968-1973, Bluestone was chair of the Ad Hoc Committee on Multiple-Use Structures. In 1971 he served as a consultant to the UMB Institute for Learning and Teaching of the Ford Foundation. Bluestone was active in the Faculty Staff Union serving on the Tenure Committee, Grievance Committee, and Violations of Freedom Committee. Other committees Bluestone served on include: Graduate Studies Committee, Faculty Committee, and Community Educational Needs Committee. Bluestone was also active in the antiwar movement of the 1960s and 1970s. As a Shakespeare scholar, Bluestone corresponded with Sidney Eaton, “Hoelzel,” Seymour Katz, John Bardis, Joel Blair, Irvin Stocks and Dan Owens, for whom he acted as editor, David Ungerer and James Fleming of Prentice Hall Publishing, and David Zesner, editor of the Shakespeare Newsletter. Many of these people sought his advice and editorial expertise. Bluestone was an active writer, editor, and composition teacher. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Max Bluestone papers document the early history of the University of Massachusetts Boston through academic and administrative governance at both the university and college levels. The founding of the English department and formation of the curriculum are also documented in the collection. Most of the papers provide information about the first twelve years of UMass Boston, covering such topics as curriculum, the evolving structure of the university, faculty tenure, including Bluestone’s dispute with the university, and the choice of a permanent site for the campus. A smaller portion of the collection documents Bluestone’s scholarly work and his stand on social issues, particularly the Vietnam War. This collection was used in 1988 for an archives processing project in Jim O’Toole’s class, Introduction to Archival Methods. The student work in box 1, folder 1 contains additional biographical information and a timeline of Bluestone’s life. Materials in this collection include committee minutes, bylaws, agendas, and policies for the Faculty Staff Union, Tenure and Grievance Committee, University Assembly, Faculty Senate, English Department, Personnel Committee, and Senate Executive Committee. Other materials include working papers, reports, syllabi, examinations, course proposals, constitutions, notes, articles written and edited by Bluestone, correspondence, publications, and clippings. 2 | Contact: [email protected] University of Massachusetts Boston University Archives and Special Collections Finding Aid Collection: SC-0031 BLUESTONE CONTAINER LIST Box: 1 1.
