Terminology of yacht parts, fittings, sails & sheets etc. Some of the obvious, and not so obvious, parts encountered on model yachts (and full size yachts). Bowsie, flat. Small drilled ‘plate’ through which runs a line, or cord, for adjustment of that line. Pre-war bowsies were often made in ivory, some were made in a fine plywood; today hard plastic is used. Bowsie, ring . A circular version of the flat bowsie, usually for larger yachts such as the A-class. Deck eye. An eye on a horizontal plate with fixing holes, located on the deck. Normally used for accepting backstay/forestay attachment, also shroud attachment on smaller yachts. Eyebolt. An eye, at the end of a threaded spigot, or bolt. Eyelet, sail. A sail eyelet is a brass part, in the shape of a ‘funnel’ before compression, and when pressed into a hole in a sail it makes a firm metal ring. It is then used to facilitate making off a line (or on occasions a wire hawser in full size practise). Larger/stronger eyelets used on laying up covers for full size boats, were turnovers , where a brass ring was firstly sewn in place over a hole punched in the sail or sheet, the turnover (eyelet) was then hammered in place using a rawhide mallet and dies. It made an immensely strong eyelet. Ferrule (slang, crimp). A brass ferrule, or sleeve, which when made off on one end of a wire, secures/attaches it by means of a loop made in the wire to a fitting or line. Head crane. -

The New York Sloop
The New York Sloop The most important of the sloop-rigged small-boat types used in the fisheries was the New York sloop, which had a style of hull and rig that influenced the design of both yachts and work-boats for over thirty years. The New York boats were developed sometime in the 1830's, when the centerboard had been accepted. The boats were built all about New York Bay, particularly on the Jersey shore. The model spread rapidly, and, by the end of the Civil War, the shoal centerboard sloop of the New York style had appeared all along the shores of western Long Island Sound, in northern New Jersey, and from thence southward into Delaware and Chesapeake waters. In the postwar growth of the southern fisheries, during the 1870's and 80's, this class of sloop was adopted all along the coasts of the South Atlantic states and in the Gulf of Mexico; finally, the boats appeared at San Francisco. The model did not become very popular, however, east of Cape Cod. The New York sloop was a distinctive boat—a wide, shoal centerboarder with a rather wide, square stern and a good deal of dead rise, the midsection being a wide, shallow V with a high bilge. The working sloops usually had a rather hard bilge; but in some it was very slack, and a strongly flaring side was used. Originally, the ends were plumb, and the stem often showed a slight tumble home at the cutwater. V-sterns and short overhanging counters were gradually introduced in the 1850's, particularly in the boats over 25 feet in length on deck. -

1/14/2019 Felucca Letter-CC - Google Docs January 14, 2019 Dear Blank, I just got back from an amazing trip to Egypt. I took sixty students along with me. Man, what a nightmare getting everyone a passport and the proper shots. We took a 747 out of SFO, that’s San Francisco International Airport, and the flight took over TWENTY hours, twelve to London, a four hour lay over, then another four hours to Cairo. When we finally got to our hotel we were so tired we didn’t notice how nice it actually was. We spent three nights in the Four Season Cairo at the Nile. What a spectacular hotel! The pool is amazing with four hot tubs and a swim up bar. Of course, Mrs. M and I couldn’t enjoy the bar, except for a soda, as we were traveling with 60 rambunctious sixth graders, but...maybe next time. Most incredible though was finally visiting all the sites I been teaching my students about for the past 28 years. Finally, I got to see Khufu’s Great Pyramid at Giza and the impressive monument to Ramses II at Abu Simbel. But, my two favorite sites are actually less wellknown. Both Hatshepsut’s temple at DayralBahri and Senusret’s White Chapel have amazing stories behind their construction. My favorite site was Hatshepsut's temple at DayralBahri. Hatshepsut was the first really powerful female pharaoh. She loved to be viewed as a man, and often wore a false beard, the symbol of divine kingship. -

BEN RUSI SEAMANSHIP AWARD NOMINATION - 2020 As per its description on the BCA website and in the BCA Member Directory, the Ben Rusi Seamanship Award “recognises outstanding acts of seamanship by individuals or groups, for single, multiple, or extended feats demonstrating a level of courage, determination, citizenship, and discipline to which all Bluewater cruisers should aspire.” This year, I nominate BILL NORRIE, BCA member as the 2020 recipient. His epic, east-about, single-handed circumnavigation via the five Great Capes of the Southern Ocean aboad his beloved 28’ Bristol Channel Cutter, Pixie, will go down in the annals of Bluewater Cruising as he put his skills, resourcefulness, adaptability and fears to the ultimate test and lived to tell the tale. Herewith a few details of his journey and the fastidious preparations that preceded his departure from Victoria on August 31, 2019 and led to his safe return one year later: Dates - August 31, 2019 to September 2, 2020 Total length of passage - 29,000nm Total length of passage at sea in days - 314 days Total length of passage at sea + in port - 366 days Stops Enroute - Gambier (French Polynesia), Tiera Del Fuego Isla Hershel, Port Stanley (Falklands Islands), Cape Town SA , and Lyttleton NZ Preparation Bill’s preparation for the circumnavigation was thorough and substantial; his over-riding goal being the safe completion of his long-held dream to circumnavigate via the southern capes. Morris, PhD, is Director Emeritus of the Institute for Aging Research at Hebrew SeniorLife in Boston, a Harvard-affiliated aging research program. He has published widely in his field. Dr. Morris’s ancestors have been fishermen going back to the seventeenth century. His Portuguese father was a Gloucester fish cutter and his Swedish mother a Gloucester fish packer. His grandfather, Stephen Olsson, spent more than four decades as a Gloucester doryman and was lost at sea in 1935. Dr. Morris is a board member of the group preserving one of the last of the surviving Gloucester schooners, the Adventure. He lives in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. An Interview with Dr. Morris Q: How did you come to write Alone at Sea? A: For 42 years, my grandfather, Steve Olsson, went to sea as a doryman – a halibut fisherman – sailing with some of Gloucester’s greatest skippers. But on March 7, 1935, for reasons never fully explained, my grandfather and his fishing partner Charles Daley of St. Joseph’s Newfoundland, while fishing from the schooner Oretha F. Spinney, disappeared from their dory – never to be seen again. Their loss came at a time when the dory fishery was drawing to a close. Six years later, I was born. During my childhood, my mother Olive told loving stories of her Papa. In 1999, I discovered via a web site that the grandson of the captain of the Spinney not only knew about my grandfather, but was named Stephen after him. -

On the point ahead, as the Spray stood out of the cove, was a lively picture, for the front of a tall factory was a flutter of hand- kerchiefs and caps. Pretty faces peered out of the windows from the top to the bottom of the building, all smiling bon voyage. Some hailed me to know where away and why alone. Why? When I made as if to stand in, a hundred pairs of arms reached out, and said come, but the shore was dangerous! The sloop worked out of the bay against a light southwest wind, and about noon squared away off Eastern Point, receiving at the same time a hearty salute—the last of many kindnesses to her at Gloucester. The wind freshened off the point, and skipping along smoothly, the Spray was soon off Thatcher’s Island lights. A (NOT SO) BRIEF HISTORY OF LUNAR DISTANCES: LUNAR LONGITUDE DETERMINATION AT SEA BEFORE THE CHRONOMETER Richard de Grijs Department of Physics and Astronomy, Macquarie University, Balaclava Road, Sydney, NSW 2109, Australia Email: [email protected] Abstract: Longitude determination at sea gained increasing commercial importance in the late Middle Ages, spawned by a commensurate increase in long-distance merchant shipping activity. Prior to the successful development of an accurate marine timepiece in the late-eighteenth century, marine navigators relied predominantly on the Moon for their time and longitude determinations. Lunar eclipses had been used for relative position determinations since Antiquity, but their rare occurrences precludes their routine use as reliable way markers. Measuring lunar distances, using the projected positions on the sky of the Moon and bright reference objects—the Sun or one or more bright stars—became the method of choice. It gained in profile and importance through the British Board of Longitude’s endorsement in 1765 of the establishment of a Nautical Almanac. Numerous ‘projectors’ jumped onto the bandwagon, leading to a proliferation of lunar ephemeris tables. Chronometers became both more affordable and more commonplace by the mid-nineteenth century, signaling the beginning of the end for the lunar distance method as a means to determine one’s longitude at sea.
