It is an area of outstanding scenic beauty and has atracted the atenton of geologists, naturalists and geomorphologists for over a century. One of the unique habitats in the Western Ghats are the rocky plateaus. Previous studies have covered plant species compositon, geological and geomorphological status of the rocky plateaus. An analytcal study of microhabitats and associated therophytes of four rocky plateau sites was conducted. The study sites were Durgawadi Plateau, Naneghat Plateau which are basalt outcrops and Zenda plateau and Amba Plateau, which are laterite outcrops on the escarpment of the northern Western Ghats. The results revealed a correlaton between basalt and lateritc rock outcrops as well as ephemeral plant elements. All four outcrops are similar in their nutrient status but the microhabitats of these plateaus are extremely diferent from each other.     5. The Foundation of the Swaraj In the first half of the seventeenth century, an epoch making personality emerged in Maharashtra - Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He established Swaraj by challenging the unjust ruling powers here. Shivaji Maharaj was born at the Shivneri fort near Junnar in Pune district on the day of Phalgun Vadya Tritiya in the Shaka year 1551, that is on 19 February 1630. Shahajiraje : Shahajiraje, the father of Shivaji Maharaj was a pre-eminent Sardar in the Deccan. The Mughals had launched a campaign to conquer the Nizamshahi Kingdom. The Adilshah of Bijapur allied with the Mughals in this campaign. Shahaji Maharaj did not wish the Mughals to get an entry into the South. So he tried to save Nizamshahi by offering stiff resistance to the Mughals. But he could not withstand the combined might of the Mughals Shahajiraje and the Adilshah. The Nizamshahi was defeated and came to an end in 1636 CE. After the Nizamshahi was wiped out, Shahajiraje became a Sardar of the Adilshah of Bijapur. The region comprising Pune, Supe, Indapur and Chakan parganas located between the Bheema and Neera rivers was vested in Shahajiraje as a jagir. This was continued by the Adilshah, and he also granted the jagir of Bengaluru and the neighbouring areas in Karnataka to Shahajiraje. For your information Jahagir or jagir means the right to enjoy the revenue of a region. The Sardars in the service of rulers used to get the revenue of the region as income instead of getting salaries directly. The region was chosen in such a way that the revenue would be equal to the salary.

    Description of the Region (Geographical extent, topography, climate, and vegetation) The Maharashtra state is about 800 km east-west and 700 km north-south, an irregular dentate pentagon, lying between 22" r-16 " 4' north latitude and 72 " 6'-80 " 9' east longitude, covering an area of 3,07,690 sq km. It is limited to the west by the Arabian Sea, making a long coastline of 720 km. by Goa and Karnataka to the south, by Andhra Pradesh on the south-east, and Madhya Pradesh on the north, and Gujarat to its north-west (Map 1). Western Ghats or Sahyadri separate coastal strip of Konkan from rest of the plateau and thereby altitude ranges from mean sea level to about 1200 m on Western Ghats (with some highest peaks in the range like Kalsubai- 1654 m, Mahabaleshwar- 1382 m) and about 200-900 m over the rest. Average rainfall in the state varies from 250 cm in Konkan to 60-75 cm in Marathwada and again increasing to 150 cm towards eastern most part of Maharashtra that is Vidarbha. It forms a large part of Indian Peninsula. Similarly temperature varies between I5"C-47''C. Relative humidity fluctuate between 15% to 90%. Nearly 21% of the geographical area is under forest. Physiography Physiographically the state is divided into 5 divisions 1. Konkan, 2. Deccan or Desh, 3. Khandesh, 4. Marathwada and 5. Vidarbha (Map 2). Konkan, a narrow coastal strip of the west of Sahyadris, varies between 27-48 km in breadth and 800 km in length from Goa to Tapi Basin.

    Introduction 2017 Chapter I Introduction Bamboo is a versatile, perennial plantation crop belonging to woody grass of family Poaceae sub family Bambusoideae. For generations’ together bamboo has been used by the rural communities in the developing world for food, building material, cash income, furniture, crafts and so many uses to support their lively hood. It is widely distributed in tropical, subtropical and mild temperate regions of the world. Since sixteen countries in Asia reported a total of 24 million hectares of bamboo resources while five African countries have been reported 2.8 million hectares of bamboo resources. It is estimated that ten Latin American countries have over 10 million hectares of bamboo resources, of the world is total about 37 million hectares or roughly 1 per cent of the global forest area. However, the figures represent only rough estimates and include pure bamboo forests; bamboo is always found to be growing in association with other species of plants. India and China are main contributors for the bamboo resources of the world. India occupies 43% of the world bamboo resources, while China stands second with 30% of bamboo resources. China is the largest producer of bamboo stocks while India stands the second largest producer of bamboos after China (Lobovikov et al ., 2007) (Fig: 1). Bamboo resources in China are mainly distributed in ten provinces in subtropical and sub temperate regions. In China both the monopodial and sympodial species are used. Anji bamboo development is a role model for all Asian and South African countries (Wang, 2006). In India, in spite of its varied climate and geography, bamboo is available in all the states except Jammu and Kashmir.

    PREFACE The process of planned economic development in India began with the launching of the First Five Year Plan in 1951 and currently India is in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-13 to 2016- 2017). The main objective of policy makers is to promote growth with social justice. During the Eleventh Plan period, the agricultural sector experienced a miniscule growth rate of 3.64 per cent per annum. Indian agriculture is presently at cross roads and one of the major challenges is to reverse deceleration in agricultural growth rates so as to successfully achieve a higher broad based growth. In view of the above, a special Additional Central Assistance Scheme -Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna (RKVY) which is a State Plan scheme administered by the Union Ministry of Agriculture was conceived. The main purpose of the scheme is to supplement state specific strategies with a view to rejuvenate agriculture. The pattern of funding under this scheme is 100 percent Central grant. In order to avail of funds under RKVY, each district is entrusted with the task of preparing a comprehensive district agricultural plan. Accordingly, this plan was prepared for Pune district. The Plan revealed that the city has suitable infrastructure and conducive climate for high value agriculture. Floriculture is also coming up in a big way. Similarly dairy development and poultry have huge potential in the district. As the city is close to Mumbai and well connected by road, rail and air to other major cities there is a ready market available for consumption of agricultural goods, processed goods, dairy and poultry products.
