Cullman Hall of the Universe on Friday, February 15. During this ongoing party series, guests can dance in the Museum’s Rose Center for Earth and Space to the sounds of the biggest names in techno, electronica, hip-hop, and indie rock. Guests can also enjoy the Hayden Big Bang Theater, located in the lower part of the Hayden Sphere, which features a dynamic multi-media presentation, narrated by acclaimed actor Liam Neeson, that takes visitors on a thrilling four-minute trip from Earth to the edge of the visible universe. Each ticket also includes one pass to the Museum for future use. Visuals for One Step Beyond are produced by Glowing Pictures. WHEN: February 15, 2013, 9 pm–1 am WHO: Foster the People, headliner (DJ set) Foster the People was founded by Mark Foster in Los Angeles, California, in 2009. After releasing their debut album Torches in May 2011, Foster’s breakthrough song “Pumped Up Kicks” became a crossover hit on commercial radio. “Pumped Up Kicks” reached number one on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart, number three on the Rock Songs chart, and number three on the Billboard Hot 100. Foster the People received two Grammy Award nominations for Torches and “Pumped Up Kicks.” Javelin, support Formed by two cousins, George Langford and Tom Van Buskirk, Javelin began in 2005 in Providence, Rhode Island. In 2008, after performing at MoMA, they moved to Brooklyn. After signing with the label Luaka Bop, they released their debut album No Mas. They have toured with many others such as Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, Matt & Kim, Warpaint, and more; and performed at Lollapalooza and the Whitney Museum, as well as other parties across the United States, Europe, and South America. Their new record, Hi Beams, will be released this Spring. Dopeshoes, opening DJ DJ and producer Dopeshoes currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. She began DJing while living in California, at the Friday-night party Soul Sauce. She went on to DJ multiple parties including Instant Funk, one of San Diego’s only all funk, soul 2 and disco nights. A frequent guest on Earthbound Radio and Jazz 88.3, she was invited in 2008 to become a member of Homegrown Blends, a renowned artist collective based on the West Coast. In late 2010, Dopeshoes relocated to Brooklyn, New York. By day, she works at Turntable Lab and writes for the music section of Time Out New York. By night, she DJs at venues throughout New York City. WHERE: American Museum of Natural History. Guests should enter through the Weston Pavilion entrance on Columbus Avenue at 79th Street. Disco • Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. • Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. • Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. • Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York • The seventies witnessed the flowering of gay clubbing, especially in New York. For the gay community in this decade, clubbing became 'a religion, a release, a way of life'. The camp, glam impulses behind the upsurge in gay clubbing influenced the image of disco in the mid-Seventies so much that it was often perceived as the preserve of three constituencies - blacks, gays and working-class women - all of whom were even less well represented in the upper echelons of rock criticism than they were in society at large. • Before the word disco existed, the phrase discotheque records was used to denote music played in New York private rent or after hours parties like the Loft and Better Days. The records played there were a mixture of funk, soul and European imports. These "proto disco" records are the same kind of records that were played by Kool Herc on the early hip hop scene. - STARS and CLUBS • Larry Levan was the first DJ-star and stands at the crossroads of disco, house and garage. He was the legendary DJ who for more than 10 years held court at the New York night club Paradise Garage.

"We never planned to be a band. We were friends first and we just love being together," says lead singer Christian Zucconi. "Grouplove grew organically from that love." Their debut album, with the tongue-in-cheek title Never Trust a Happy Song, is quickly spreading the love, too. Their sweet and savory mix of jangly, upbeat melodies, Zucconi's anguished howl and keyboardist Hannah Hooper's coquettish backup vocals have been making the rounds in indie rock circles and on the charts. Joyful, noisy single Colours peaked at No. 12 on USA TODAY's alternative chart. Another track, Tongue Tied, lassoed the new iPod Touch commercial, which ran during the Grammy nominations concert and has continued since Thanksgiving. Add Grouplove's lock as the opening band for Young the Giant's tour in March and April, and it's no wonder they're so lovey-dovey. Happy accidents: Zucconi wasn't always this upbeat. "Before Grouplove, I was in other bands, but the timing never seemed right," he says. "I'd wake up every day depressed, I spent so many years miserable doing music. But it's wonderful now how we overcame everything together. It's funny that Grouplove is such a happy band." The band members met each other in 2008 at an artist commune in Crete.

    "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.
