Not only did she manage to survive as a star into the 1980's, she is still recording and touring frequently today. Evelyn was born into a musical family. She was born in The Bronx and her father, Eric King, performed often as a stand-in singer for various bands, occasionally at the legendary Apollo Theatre. Later, her family moved to Philadelphia, and 14- year-old Evelyn began performing professionally with a local band. At age 15, Evelyn's big break came in storybook fashion. Legend has it she was working, subbing for her sister as a cleaning woman at Philadelphia's Sigma Studios, and singing “A Change Is Gonna Come.” Soul producer T. (Theodore) Life, a former member of the band Instant Funk, heard her singing. He took her to RCA, signed her to a contract, and produced her first album Smooth Talk. The album included the disco smash “Shame.” She earned some notoriety as a teenager singing adult- themed songs in an adult-sounding voice, but Evelyn was on her way. The follow-up, “I Don't Know If It's Right” was a major mid-tempo R&B hit. She began working with former B.T. Express member Kashif as her producer. The result in 1981 was “I'm in Love,” a #1 dance hit. She followed up with the Get Loose album in 1982 and another smash, the classic anthem “Love Come Down.” Kashif maintained an open, uncluttered production style that let Evelyn's strong, rich voice shine through. Evelyn Champagne King is one of the 2014 G.E.M.A. Golden Mic Honors Honorees. Disco • Disco marked the dawn of dance-based popular music. • Growing out of the increasingly groove-oriented sound of early '70s and funk, disco emphasized the beat above anything else, even the singer and the song. • Disco was named after discotheques, clubs that played nothing but music for dancing. • Most of the discotheques were gay clubs in New York • The seventies witnessed the flowering of gay clubbing, especially in New York. For the gay community in this decade, clubbing became 'a religion, a release, a way of life'. The camp, glam impulses behind the upsurge in gay clubbing influenced the image of disco in the mid-Seventies so much that it was often perceived as the preserve of three constituencies - blacks, gays and working-class women - all of whom were even less well represented in the upper echelons of rock criticism than they were in society at large. • Before the word disco existed, the phrase discotheque records was used to denote music played in New York private rent or after hours parties like the Loft and Better Days. The records played there were a mixture of funk, soul and European imports. These "proto disco" records are the same kind of records that were played by Kool Herc on the early hip hop scene. - STARS and CLUBS • Larry Levan was the first DJ-star and stands at the crossroads of disco, house and garage. He was the legendary DJ who for more than 10 years held court at the New York night club Paradise Garage.

    "Disco Madness: Walter Gibbons and the Legacy of Turntablism and Remixology" Tim Lawrence Journal of Popular Music Studies, 20, 3, 2008, 276-329 This story begins with a skinny white DJ mixing between the breaks of obscure Motown records with the ambidextrous intensity of an octopus on speed. It closes with the same man, debilitated and virtually blind, fumbling for gospel records as he spins up eternal hope in a fading dusk. In between Walter Gibbons worked as a cutting-edge discotheque DJ and remixer who, thanks to his pioneering reel-to-reel edits and contribution to the development of the twelve-inch single, revealed the immanent synergy that ran between the dance floor, the DJ booth and the recording studio. Gibbons started to mix between the breaks of disco and funk records around the same time DJ Kool Herc began to test the technique in the Bronx, and the disco spinner was as technically precise as Grandmaster Flash, even if the spinners directed their deft handiwork to differing ends. It would make sense, then, for Gibbons to be considered alongside these and other towering figures in the pantheon of turntablism, but he died in virtual anonymity in 1994, and his groundbreaking contribution to the intersecting arts of DJing and remixology has yet to register beyond disco aficionados.1 There is nothing mysterious about Gibbons's low profile. First, he operated in a culture that has been ridiculed and reviled since the "disco sucks" backlash peaked with the symbolic detonation of 40,000 disco records in the summer of 1979.

Many other nations and peoples have attempted to become "the empire" in Rome's place. We maintain that, whether willingly or not, America is today busily occupied in playing Rome. McCurn, Senior District Judge Summary Order The plaintiffs in this copyright infringement action, UMG Recordings, Inc., Atlantic Recording Corporation, SONY BMG Music Entertainment, Elektra Entertainment Group, Inc., and BMG Music (“Plaintiffs”), seek a default judgment Case 5:08-cv-00699-NPM-GHL Document 14 Filed 01/21/09 Page 2 of 5 against defendant, Ayisha Crockrell (“Defendant”), for violations of their exclusive rights in copyrighted materials. See 17 U.S.C. § 501 (2002). This action was commenced by the filing of a complaint and the issuance of a summons on July 1, 2008. On July 15, 2008, a copy of said summons and complaint were properly served upon Defendant pursuant to Fed. R. Civ. P. 4(e)(2)(B), proof of which service was filed with this court on August 5, 2008. See Dkt. No. 6. Defendant has failed to appear, answer or otherwise move with respect to the complaint and Defendant’s time to appear, answer or otherwise move has expired.
