An Intersectional Feminist Approach
GUIDING PRINCIPLE 1 AN INTERSECTIONAL FEMINIST APPROACH An intersectional approach to feminism acknowledges that while women share similar experiences of discrimination, harassment, sexism, inequality and oppression on the basis of their sex and gender, not all women are equally disadvantaged or have equal access to resources, power and privilege. An intersectional approach to feminism requires analysis and action that is not only gendered, but considers how other forms of systemic oppression and discrimination – such as racism, homophobia, transphobia, biphobia or ableism – can intersect with and impact on women’s experiences of gender, inequality, discrimination, harassment, violence or abuse. In the context of addressing violence against women, an intersectional approach recognises that the way women experience gender and inequality can be different based on a range of other cultural, individual, historical, environmental or structural factors including (but not limited to) race, age, geographic location, sexual orientation, ability or class. This approach also recognises that the drivers, dynamics and impacts of violence women experience can be compounded and magnified by their experience of other forms of oppression and inequality, resulting in some groups of women experiencing higher rates and/or more severe forms of violence, or facing barriers to support and safety that other women do not experience. DVRCV stands in solidarity with and supports work that addresses other forms of discrimination and oppression. We actively promote and give voice to this work and support those leading it to consider gender in their approach, just as we consider how our work to address violence against women can challenge other forms of oppression that women experience. -

This hegemonic femininity prescribes standards that are considered ideals in describing the archetypical feminine woman. Black women have been stereotyped as unfeminine and unattractive, and this negative and pervasive social rhetoric continue to have a long lasting adverse impact on this population. Black feminist scholars have long articulated the importance of defining Black womanhood not in relation to hegemonic femininity, but by incorporating the actual experiences of Black women. Using an interpretative phenomenological methodology and based on interviews with Black women in the United States, the current study investigated Black women’s notion of womanhood. This study uncovered ways participants self-defined, resisted negative and oppressive societal messages, and celebrated their own Black Womanhood. -

Ranjula Bali Swain and Supriya Garikipati* Abstract An explicit goal of foreign aid is to promote female empowerment and gender equality in developing countries. The impact of foreign aid on these latent variables at the country level is not yet known because of various methodological impediments. We address these by using Structural Equation Models. We use data from the World Development Indicators, the World Governance Indicators and the OECDs Credit Reporting System to investigate if foreign aid has an impact on gender performance of recipient countries at the country level. Our results suggest that to observe improvement in gender performance at the macro-level, foreign aid must target the gender outcomes of interest in a clearly measurable ways. JEL classifications: O11, J16, C13 Keywords: foreign aid, gender performance, structural equation model. 1. Introduction Gender entered the development dialogue over the period 1975-85 which came to be marked by the United Nations as the UN Decade for Women. The accumulating evidence over this period suggests that economic and social developments are not gender-neutral and improving gender outcomes has important implications both at the household and country levels, especially for the prospect of intergenerational wellbeing (Floro, 1995; Klasen, 1999). Consequentially, gender equality came to be widely accepted as a goal of development, as evidenced particularly by its prominence in the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) and, later on, in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). -

About the Virtual Visiting Scholars The Virtual Visiting Scholars (VVS) program provides a unique opportunity for select scholars across disciplines to pursue research meta-analysis, synthesis, and big data curation on topics crucial to STEM faculty equity. About the Author Dr. Beth Mitchneck is currently Professor Emerita in the School of Geography & Development at the University of Arizona. RobinsonQ Amid today's sometimes frenzied government action to cure en- vironmental degradation, and amid the defensive posturing of cor- porate managers and their public relations staffs, and the vigorous, if occasionally strident, protests by conservationists to protect en- dangered Nature, few have stopped to examine the role of the attorney as anything other than 1itigator.l Legal counseling has largely ignored the many environmental laws which have recently been enacted. Headlines have fixed on dramatic government prosecutions or conservation law suits; legal counsel in some specialized fields, such as electrical utilities or oil and other natural resource exploitation, have begun to cope with new environmental law requirements.' However, most lawyers as counselors are not yet involved in the struggle for environ- mentally sound development.
