Day 1: Arrive in Lake Region

Sites of interest: Arrive in the Ecuador’s capital city. Nestled between mountains at 9,350 feet, Quito is the second highest capital in the world.

You will land at Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Tababela, just east of Ecuador’s capital city where you will pick up your rental car and head for your hotel in the heart of Otavalo, north of Quito in the lake region. Along the way, take in the postcard worthy views of the volcanoes, lakes, and valleys that comprise Ecuador’s Northern Sierra. This region is home to more than six volcanoes, the most prominent of them being (18,996 ft), Cotacachi (16,220 ft), and Imbabura (15,121 ft). These forces of nature make great landscape for lakes big and small to form in their craters, and thus the region is named as such. Quito, colonial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 named so for its colonial architecture. The city´s namesake was the Quitus tribe who lived in the area before Inca rule. Later, the Spanish founded the city of Quito in 1534. Day 2: Take the Liberty Train and Explore Lake Cuicocha

Sites of interest: Andean train with panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Traditional Andean communities. Lake Cuicocha and its impressive landscapes.

Board the Liberty Train (closed Monday-Wednesday) that will take you through the humbling valleys between Ibarra and Salinas. Your first stop will be San Roque to visit its museum and taste the infamous corn tortillas and blueberry jam. Continuing along, you will stop at a textile mill, the community of San Antonio de Ibarra, and a sculpture workshop all before arriving in Salinas where two Afro-Ecuadorian women will greet you with a traditional dance and local cuisine.

Later on, admire the work of the expert leather craftsmen of the sleepy but friendly village of Cotacachi. Stop into one of the local boutiques where they will explain the process of working with leather. In the afternoon, you will explore Lake Cuicocha and its two islets. These natural wonders find themselves in Cotacachi-Cayapas Natural Reserve, the perfect site to take in the fresh air and beautiful terrain. You are required to hire a local guide at the entrance of the national reserve (price ref. $40). Before heading back to Otavalo, stop in the village of Peguche to check out its famous waterfall measuring around 100 feet!

Day 3: Walk Through Otavalo Market and Visit Mitad del Mundo

Sites of interest: Authentic indigenous market. Stand in two hemispheres at once at the Mitad del Mundo.

Breakfast at the hotel. You will begin your day at the Otavalo market—the most famous indigenous market in , where Andean traditions thrive in the form of colorful textiles and handmade jewelry. Here, you’ll be able to admire the work of master weavers and expert leather craftsmen from the surrounding villages. The perfect place to buy your souvenirs! From here, head off to the Mitad del Mundo. Don’t leave without a picture of yourself in two hemispheres at once!

Day 4: Discover Quito’s Historic Center

Sites of interest: Quito’s historic center. Panoramic views from the Panecillo.

Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will be able to explore the capital city at your leisure. You could for example: - Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Quito’s old town, one of the best-preserved in Latin America, and admire a 10,000 foot view of the city from the Panecillo. There stands the statue of the Virgin of Quito whose placement is said to unite the North and South of the city. - Ascend to the base of Mount Rucu by way of the tram known as theTelefériQo. You will make it to Cruz Loma at about 13,100 feet of elevation as you take in the sights! (price ref. $9/person) - Visite one of the many museums Quito has to offer: o The« Museo de la Ciudad » located in one of the oldest buildings in the city which previously served as one of the largest hospitals in the country for more than 400 years. This museum focuses its theme on the quotidien lives of « quiteños » throughout history (closed on Mondays, price ref. $3/person). o The « Museo del Alabado » whose mission is to preserve the artwork of many pre-Columbian cultures that existed in different regions of Ecuador (price ref. $6/person). o The Guayasamín Museum and la Capilla del Hombre is home to the life’s work of the late Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamín. There you may admire his dramatic and impressive paintings and also visit his home. The museum also offers an amazing view of Quito (price ref. $9/person). Later in the afternoon, you will leave from Quito and head toward at the foot of the impressive Cotopaxi where you will spend the night.

Day 5: Hike Through Cotopaxi National Park

Sites of interest: Discover one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Tour a rose plantation.

Breakfast at the hotel. Take the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” to Cotopaxi National Park where you’ll find one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world. You are required to hire a local guide at the entrance of the national park (price ref. $40). In the park, pay a visit to the interpretation center and Limpiopungo Lake and from there you will head up by car to the parking lot situated at 14,760 feet for a spectacular view of the park. If you’ve got it in you, and you aren´t affected by the altitude, you can trek 980 feet further to the José Rivas refuge. From Cotopaxi, you will head off for one of Ecuador’s famed rose plantations. Roses grow plentifully at Andean altitudes and with help from the mild yet warm climate. Here, you will have the chance to observe a variety of roses and learn about how their grown from seed-planting to harvest. Spend the night at a charming hostel near the Quilotoa crater. Day 6: Descend into Quilotoa’s Crater

Sites of interest: Witness one of the most beautiful craters in the world.

Breakfast at the hostel. Continue your journey toward Quilotoa. This dormant volcano is most well-known for the gigantic turquoise lake that has formed in its crater. You can stay at the Shalala lookout, built in 2014 for looking down at the crater from 12,795 feet, or head down to the shores of the lake for some kayaking (price ref. $10/person). Hike back up on foot or ride a donkey (price ref. $10/person)! Afterward, you could visit an artisanal workshop in the community of Tigua, known for its pre-Columbian and colonial works of art. You will spend the night in Riobamba comforted by views of the tallest mountain on Earth, the awe-inspiring Chimborazo (20,560 ft). Chimborazo has long been an important symbol of Ecuador and is thus included in its coat of arms. Day 7: Journey Through Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve

Sites of interest: Discover the highest volcano in Ecuador. Participate in daily life with an indigenous community.

Breakfast at the hotel. This morning, set off for Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve, home to Ecuador’s tallest volcano and the peak furthest from the Earth’s center: Chimborazo (20,560 ft). You are required to hire a local guide at the entrance of the national reserve (price ref. $40). On this excursion along the slopes of the volcano, take in the sights and keep an eye out for the llama-like creatures known as vicuñas as well as birds of prey like the condor, caracaras and falcons.

Further south in the Andes, you will spend the night in the community of Guamote, where the locals have preserved their ancestral customs, their way of life and traditional dress.

Discover the Inti Sisa foundation and meet with its members from Guamote and surrounding communities. Take witness to the community involvement and effort put forth to ensure that this cultural center remains open.

Day 8: Visit Guamote Market and Ingapirca Ruins

Sites of interest: Indigenous market of Guamote. Incan ruins of Ingapirca.

In the morning, visit the famous indigenous market of Guamote where you will have the chance to witness the local bartering still custom in many Andean communities (only open Thursday). In the afternoon, you will discover the archeological ruins of Ingapirca. Ingapirca is paramount evidence of Incan presence in Ecuador as well as their construction practices and precise solar calculations. From here you will walk toward the “Face of the Inca,” a giant nature-made human face on the side of a steep cliff near the temple ruins (price ref. $2/person). This site was very important during Inca rule before Spanish conquest. Its political, administrative, military and religious significance made it a place of power for Inca culture just like Machu Picchu.

Day 9: Explore Colonial City of Cuenca

Sites of interest: Colonial city of Cuenca and its principal cultural and tourist attractions.

Dive into the heart of Cuenca, Ecuador’s most beautiful city and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. You will come to be enchanted by Cuenca’s churches, parks, plazas and flower market. You could for example: - Visit the Plaza San Francisco, where they market the fabric made in the North. - Enjoy the amazing view from El Turi hilltop. - Witness the meticulous work of the Panama hat makers. Day 10: Stop in El Cajas National Park en Route to Guayaquil

Sites of interest: One of the most beautiful national parks in Ecuador. Ecuador’s largest city: Guayaquil.

Breakfast at the hotel. Stop in El Cajas National Park at the altitudes you have come to know well in order to descend to the coastal region and its banana, rice, cacao, and coffee plantations. In the afternoon, visit a cacao plantation where they also plant rice and other tropical fruits. You will then reach Guayaquil, the country’s biggest city nicknamed “the pearl of the Pacific.” Soak up the sun in Parque Seminario alongside the iguanas and walk along the Malecón 2000 until you reach Las Peñas. From there climb the stairs to Cerro Santa Ana for a breathtaking view of the city and the Guayas River. However, the order of events may be modified and/or certain visits eliminated due to circumstances beyond our control (weather and sea conditions, strikes, public authority decisions, road conditions, and the discretion of local tour operators). Ecuador Emotions will not be held responsible for extra costs due to late or cancelled transportation for whatever reason. It is also the responsibility of the client to abide by the baggage restrictions enforced by the airlines (overweight baggage fees will be paid by the passenger directly). Moreover, flight rates are subject to change without notice. Ecuador Emotions suggests that their clients consult their doctor before traveling, especially to ensure that their health will not be at risk at altitude. Certain excursions may be changed due to the physical condition of our clients if said excursions are determined unsafe or harmful. We recommend purchasing travel insurance in order to avoid any additional charge that may come with any last minute change of your flight itinerary. Terms of Payment

With the confirmation of our services, an initial payment of 30% the total amount must be processed within 10 days of the reservation. The total amount must be paid no later than 45 days before the start of the tour.

Cancellation Policy

Up to 45 days before the start of the tour: penalty equivalent to the amount of initial payment. Between 44 and 31 days before the start of the tour: penalty of 60% the total amount.* Between 30 and 15 days before the start of the tour: penalty of 80% the total amount.* Less than 15 days before the start of the tour: penalty of 100% the total amount. *A credit memo equivalent to the amount already payed (penalty not included) will be issued.
