Nestled between mountains at 9,350 feet, Quito is the second highest capital in the world. You will land at Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Tababela, just east of Ecuador’s capital city where you will pick up your rental car and head for your hotel in the heart of Otavalo, north of Quito in the lake region. Along the way, take in the postcard worthy views of the volcanoes, lakes, and valleys that comprise Ecuador’s Northern Sierra. This region is home to more than six volcanoes, the most prominent of them being Cayambe (18,996 ft), Cotacachi (16,220 ft), and Imbabura (15,121 ft). These forces of nature make great landscape for lakes big and small to form in their craters, and thus the region is named as such. Quito, colonial city and UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978 named so for its colonial architecture. The city´s namesake was the Quitus tribe who lived in the area before Inca rule. Later, the Spanish founded the city of Quito in 1534. Traditional Andean communities. Lake Cuicocha and its impressive landscapes. Breakfast at the hotel. Board the Liberty Train (closed Monday-Wednesday) that will take you through the humbling valleys between Ibarra and Salinas. Your first stop will be San Roque to visit its museum and taste the infamous corn tortillas and blueberry jam. Continuing along, you will stop at a textile mill, the community of San Antonio de Ibarra, and a sculpture workshop all before arriving in Salinas where two Afro-Ecuadorian women will greet you with a traditional dance and local cuisine. Later on, admire the work of the expert leather craftsmen of the sleepy but friendly village of Cotacachi. Stop into one of the local boutiques where they will explain the process of working with leather. In the afternoon, you will explore Lake Cuicocha and its two islets. These natural wonders find themselves in Cotacachi-Cayapas Natural Reserve, the perfect site to take in the fresh air and beautiful terrain. You are required to hire a local guide at the entrance of the national reserve (price ref. $40). Before heading back to Otavalo, stop in the village of Peguche to check out its famous waterfall measuring around 100 feet! Stand in two hemispheres at once at the Mitad del Mundo. Breakfast at the hotel. You will begin your day at the Otavalo market—the most famous indigenous market in South America, where Andean traditions thrive in the form of colorful textiles and handmade jewelry. Here, you’ll be able to admire the work of master weavers and expert leather craftsmen from the surrounding villages. The perfect place to buy your souvenirs! From here, head off to the Mitad del Mundo. Don’t leave without a picture of yourself in two hemispheres at once! Spend the night in Quito. Panoramic views from the Panecillo. Breakfast at the hotel. Today you will be able to explore the capital city at your leisure. You could for example: - Stroll through the cobblestone streets of Quito’s old town, one of the best-preserved in Latin America, and admire a 10,000 foot view of the city from the Panecillo. There stands the statue of the Virgin of Quito whose placement is said to unite the North and South of the city. - Ascend to the base of Mount Rucu Pichincha by way of the tram known as theTelefériQo. You will make it to Cruz Loma at about 13,100 feet of elevation as you take in the sights! (price ref. $9/person) - Visite one of the many museums Quito has to offer: o The« Museo de la Ciudad » located in one of the oldest buildings in the city which previously served as one of the largest hospitals in the country for more than 400 years. This museum focuses its theme on the quotidien lives of « quiteños » throughout history (closed on Mondays, price ref. $3/person). o The « Museo del Alabado » whose mission is to preserve the artwork of many pre-Columbian cultures that existed in different regions of Ecuador (price ref. $6/person). o The Guayasamín Museum and la Capilla del Hombre is home to the life’s work of the late Ecuadorian painter Oswaldo Guayasamín. There you may admire his dramatic and impressive paintings and also visit his home. The museum also offers an amazing view of Quito (price ref. $9/person). Later in the afternoon, you will leave from Quito and head toward Latacunga at the foot of the impressive Cotopaxi Volcano where you will spend the night. Tour a rose plantation. Breakfast at the hotel. Take the “Avenue of the Volcanoes” to Cotopaxi National Park where you’ll find one of the tallest active volcanoes in the world. You are required to hire a local guide at the entrance of the national park (price ref. $40). In the park, pay a visit to the interpretation center and Limpiopungo Lake and from there you will head up by car to the parking lot situated at 14,760 feet for a spectacular view of the park. If you’ve got it in you, and you aren´t affected by the altitude, you can trek 980 feet further to the José Rivas refuge. From Cotopaxi, you will head off for one of Ecuador’s famed rose plantations. Roses grow plentifully at Andean altitudes and with help from the mild yet warm climate. Here, you will have the chance to observe a variety of roses and learn about how their grown from seed-planting to harvest. Spend the night at a charming hostel near the Quilotoa crater. Accompanied by: None Meals included: Breakfast + dinner Altitude: Cotopaxi approx. 14,760 feet Quilotoa 12,841 feet Travel: Latacunga – Cotopaxi: 36 min – 21 miles Cotopaxi – Rose plantation: 30 min – 31 miles Rose plantation – Chugchilan: 2h – 68 miles Accommodations: Mama Hilda*** (or similar) Ecuador Emotions Day 6: Descend into Quilotoa’s Crater Sites of interest: Witness one of the most beautiful craters in the world. Breakfast at the hostel. Continue your journey toward Quilotoa. This dormant volcano is most well-known for the gigantic turquoise lake that has formed in its crater. You can stay at the Shalala lookout, built in 2014 for looking down at the crater from 12,795 feet, or head down to the shores of the lake for some kayaking (price ref. $10/person). Hike back up on foot or ride a donkey (price ref. $10/person)! Afterward, you could visit an artisanal workshop in the community of Tigua, known for its pre-Columbian and colonial works of art. You will spend the night in Riobamba comforted by views of the tallest mountain on Earth, the awe-inspiring Chimborazo (20,560 ft). Chimborazo has long been an important symbol of Ecuador and is thus included in its coat of arms.
