The stratigraphic ranges and systematics of heteromorphic ammonites from Lower Cretaceous (Haute- rivian-Barremian) deposits in Lower Saxony, northern Germany, are revised. Nine genera and forty- seven species of the family Ancyloceratidae Gill, 1871, are described. One genus (Fissicostaticeras) and 20 species are new; Emericiceras ressense, E. sornayiforme, E. serpentinum, E. subtilicostatum, E. gotti, E. hanno­ verense, E. kemperi, Crioceratites hastensis, C. subisocostatus, C. vermiformis, Fissicostaticeras claviferum, F. aequicostatoides, F. rarocinctoides, Paracrioceras kleini, Acrioceras (Acrioceras) sarstedtense, A. The main part of this collection consists of excellently preserved specimens, which have been collected bed by bed from the Valanginian to Barremian of northern Germany. The stratigraphic provenance of these ammonites is well docu- mented by lithological columns of every quarry sampled. Heteromorphic ammonites are especially well represented in the Wiedenroth Collection; it is these ammonites which form the main zonal index fossils for the Boreal Hauterivian and Barremian. The majority of these specimens were collected between 1977 and 1996 when, due to temporary excavations or canal works, Kurt Wiedenroth had the opportunity to meas- ure and draw in detail litho- and biostratigraphical columns, and to collect the fossils from these sections. Examples include the construction of the subways at the Aegidi- entor Square in Hannover; along the Hildesheimerstasse; along the S-Bahn at the Han- nover Airport; along the Mittelland Canal works in the district of Haste; at quarries 2 Kakabadze & Hoedemaeker. New data on heteromorphic ammonites. Scripta Geol., 140 (2010) along the Mittelland Canal near Wilhelmsdorf; at the O. Gott quarry near Sarstedt; the Resse quarry near Hainholz; and the Flemming quarry near Berenbostel. However, the ammonites in the Wiedenroth collection were insufficiently identified until now, most only to the generic level. Von Koenen (1902, 1904, 1908) was the first author to publish systematic descrip- tions of ammonites and elaborate a detailed biostratigraphical subdivision of the Early Cretaceous of northern Germany. These data still have great theoretical and practical significance. Detailed litho- and biostratigraphic descriptions of the most important Lower Cretaceous sections of northern Germany have been published subsequently, but only a relatively small number of ammonites have been described or identified by later authors (Kemper, 1971, 1976, 1992; Immel & Mutterlose, 1980; Mutterlose, 1989, 1995, 1998; Mutterlose & Wiedenroth, 1996; Mutterlose et al., 1997; Mutterlose & Borne- mann, 2002). A monographic study of Early Cretaceous heteromorphic ammonites from this area against the background of a new systematic approach is desirable. In the present paper the systematic position of the Hauterivian and Barremian heteromorphic genera and species is considered. It contains descriptions of new species and of taxa that were in need of reinvestigation. The present collection is undoubtedly of importance for a detailed biostratigraphic subdivision of the Hauterivian to Barremi- an rocks of northern Germany and adjacent areas of The Netherlands, as well as for zonal correlation between the Boreal regions of Europe-North America-Asia and for the Tethyan-Boreal zonal correlation. As the Wiedenroth Collection is representative of the greater part of the Hauterivian and Barremian ammonite fauna of the North Sea basin sensu lato from England to Poland, it also provides a reference for ammonites found in boreholes in the oil-bearing strata of the North Sea. All specimens described are kept in the Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum – Nat- uralis, Leiden. The registration numbers are prefixed with RGM, referring to the former Rijksmuseum van Geologie en Mineralogie. Stratigraphic framework The ammonites from the Wiedenroth collection described in this monograph come from the upper Hauterivian and Barremian of the Hannover area. The ammonite zones in this stratigraphic interval are the following: Upper Barremian (which includes the German “middle Barremian”) Parancyloceras bidentatum Zone Simancyloceras stolleyi Zone Paracrioceras rude Zone Emericiceras sparsicosta Zone Ancyloceras innexum Zone Paracrioceras denckmanni Zone Paracrioceras elegans Zone Lower Barremian Fissicostaticeras fissicostatum Zone Fissicostaticeras rarocinctum Zone Kakabadze & Hoedemaeker. New data on heteromorphic ammonites. Scripta Geol., 140 (2010) 3 Upper Hauterivian Simbirkites (Craspedodiscus) discofalcatus Zone Simbirskites (Craspedodiscus) gottschei Zone Simbirskites (Milanowskia) staffi Zone Aegocrioceras beds (correlated with a part of the Simbirskites (Speetoniceras) inversum Zone in England) Most heteromorphic ammonites of the Wiedenroth collection were collected from the staffi Zone, from bed 83 (rarocinctum Zone) in the Gott quarry near Sarstedt, and from beds 6 and 7 (fissicotatumand fissicostatum-elegans zonal boundary, respectively) in the subway of the Aegidientor Square in Hannover. No heteromorphs were collected from the gottschei, innexum and stolleyi zones. The large number of specimens of Aegocrioceras contained in the Wiedenroth Collec- tion have not been studied and will be described elsewhere. The Aegocrioceras beds rep- resent a rather cold phase during the Hauterivian, but, when temperatures rose again, Aegocrioceras gradually disappeared to give way to species of Crioceratites and Simbir­ skites (Kemper et al., 1987). The first specimens of Emericiceras and Crioceratites were collected from bed 44 at quarry 4 along the Mittelland Canal near Wilhelmsdorf (Haste), which is the lowest of the boundary beds between the upper Hauterivian Aegocrioceras beds and the staffi Zone. The first fragments ofSimbirskites occur in bed 46, but Simbirskites staffi itself was not found below bed 48 (K. Wiedenroth in Mutterlose, 1997b, p. 100). Bed 44 (which correlates with bed 19 at the S-Bahn of Hannover Airport) yielded Emericiceras ressense sp. nov., E. kemperi sp. nov., E. nolani, E. subtilicostatum sp. nov., E. wermbteri, E. hannoverense sp. nov. and Crioceratites subisocostatus sp. nov. These species, except for E. ressense, have also been found in the staffi Zone above bed 48 together with Crioceratites hastensis sp. nov., C. vermiformis sp. nov., Emericiceras woeckeneri, E. serpenti­ num sp. nov., E. strombecki and E. gotti sp. nov. The two last-named also occur in the discofalcatus Zone together with Acrioceras aff. monopujaae yvanii and Acrioceras sp. Emericiceras ex gr. emerici occurs in the boundary bed between the discofalcatus and rarocinctum zones. Bed 83 of the lower Barremian rarocinctum Zone at the Gott quarry yieldedParancy ­ loceras aegoceras, the last Emericiceras nolani, E. sornayiforme sp. nov., Fissicostaticeras clav­ iferum, F. rarocinctum, F. rarocinctoides sp. nov., Hoplocrioceras phillipsi, Acrioceras sarstedtense sp. nov., A. sarasini, A. meriani and A. longum sp. nov. The greater part of the fissicostatum Zone is represented by the black shales of the so-called ‘Hauptblätterton’, which yield no ammonites. Bed 6 in the top part of the fis­ sicostatum Zone in the subway of Aegidientor Square yielded Uhligia minuta, U. aegidii sp. nov., Uhligia sp., Hoplocrioceras laeviusculum, Acrioceras crassicostatum, A. nodulosum, Fissicostaticeras fissicostatum, F. ex gr. fissicostatumand F. aequicostatoides. The four last-named species also occur in the fissicostatum-elegans zonal boundary bed 7 of the same

Results of a strati- graphical study of the uppermost Barremian and the lower Aptian succession in the Trans-Caspian area are presented. The bed-by-bed description of three sections — Keldzhe, Tekedzhik and Utu- ludzha — is given as well as detailed lithologic columns. Five ammonite zones are known in the stud- ied stratigraphic interval — the Turkmeniceras turkmenicum, Deshayesites tuarkyricus, D. weissi, D. deshayesi, and Dufrenoya furcata zones. These zones are correlated with those of Europe. The Bar- remian/Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area should be drawn at the base of the D. tuarkyricus Zone. It corresponds to the layers with the first occurrences of Deshayesites, Prodeshayesites and Para- deshayesites in Europe. It is proposed here to situate the boundary stratotype in the Utuludzha section, where the beds containing zonal representatives of the T. turkmenicum and D. tuarkyricus Zones are almost adjacent. The cephalopod fauna from the marly limestones to marls here indicates Late Valanginian to Early Aptian age. The deposition of the marly limestones and marls of this interval occurred during depositional- ly unstable conditions. The underlying Biancone Formation (Maiolica Formation) is of Early Valanginian, whereas the lowermost Rosso Ammonitico is of Jurassic to Berriasian age. The ammonoid fauna consists of 27 different genera, each represented by 1-2 species. The assemblage at the Puez section is dominated by the Phylloceratina (30%) and the Ammonitina (34%). Phyllopachyceras (17%) and Phylloceras (13%) (both Phylloceratina) are the most frequent components, followed by Lytoceras (12%) (Lytoceratina), and Barremites (10%) and Melchiorites (8%) (both Ammonitina). The cephalopod fauna is purely of Mediterranean origin. Zusammenfassung Unterkreide Ammonoideen (424 Exemplare) der Puez Lokalität in den Dolomiten Süd-Tirols wurden unter- sucht. Die Fauna der mergeligen Kalke und Mergel von Puez zeigen ein Alter von Ober-Valanginium bis Unter-Aptium an. Die mergeligen Kalke und Mergel dieses Abschnitts lagerten sich unter instabiler Bedingungen ab. Die unterlagernde Biancone Formation (Maiolica Formation) zeigt Unter-Valanginium an, wogegen die tiefste Formation des Rosso Ammonitico auf Ober-Jura bis Berriasium hindeutet.

A strati graphical synthesis of the Lower Cretaceous deposits in the area studied is outlined. Schematic sequences of the measured sections at the principal localities, which also exhibit the various levels containing ammonites, are shown. The section on systematic palaeontology comprises a discussion of the subfamily Helicancylinae, and generic and specific descriptions of all taxa represented in the Austral Basin. In addition to the study of the Patagonian material, bibliographical research reveals the necessity of redefining the genera Helicancylus and Hamiticeras in order to clarify the systematics of the subfamily. The following species are identified: Helicancylus patagonicus, Helicancylus bonarellii, Toxo­ ceratoides nagerai, Toxoceratoides cf. biplex, Toxoceratoides? haughtoni, Toxoceratoides? sp., and Tonohamites aequicingulatus. The fauna shows some affinities with that of Zululand and western Europe.     Carnets de Géologie / Notebooks on Geology - Article 2010/01 (CG2010_A01) Problems in the identity of "Crioceras" barremense KILIAN, 1895 (Ancyloceratida, Late Barremian), and their proposed resolution 1 Didier BERT * 2 Robert BUSNARDO 3 Gérard DELANOY 4 Stéphane BERSAC Abstract: The study of "Crioceras" barremense KILIAN was undertaken as a part of the revision of the Hemihoplitidae. This species was considered "classic" and has been used as the index of an Upper Barremian subzone; this usage raises a number of problems. The type specimen from Tyrol was a fragment described and illustrated by UHLIG as Crioceras sp. ind. aff. roemeri. This specimen could not be retrieved, and a topotype could not be collected. Our study revealed that there is both a biostratigraphic hiatus and important differences between conceptions of this species: (1) that ascribed UHLIG's type specimen (Upper Barremian, Tyrol), (2) KILIAN's concept of the specimen he found and named "Crioceras" barremense (probably a Camereiceras from the uppermost levels of the Vandenheckei Subzone or from the basal Sartousiana subzone of the Nauvin site, southeastern France) and (3) current interpretations of authors, who often synonymize the type specimen with Gassendiceras alpinum (d'ORBIGNY), which occurs in the middle of the Vandenheckei Subzone. So there is a real confusion concerning the synonymy of "Crioceras" barremense. The age of UHLIG's type specimen is too imprecise and its preservation too fragmentary to be reliably identifiable, because the same morphology and ornamentation exist in several species of other genera. Therefore, we recommend the use of the species "Crioceras" barremense KILIAN be avoided, in particular as an index, along with that of the genus Barrancyloceras VERMEULEN for which "C." barremense is used as reference.

The Barremian heteromorph ammonite Dissimilites from northern Italy: Taxon- omy and evolutionary implications. Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 59 (3): 663–680. A new acrioceratid ammonite, Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov., from the Barremian (Lower Cretaceous) of the Puez area (Dolomites, northern Italy) is described. Dissimilites intermedius sp. nov. is an intermediate form between D. dissimilis and D. trinodosum. The new species combines the ribbing style of D. dissimilis (bifurcating with intercalating single ribs) with the tuberculation style of D. trinodosum (trituberculation on entire shell). The shallow-helical spire, entirely comprising single ribs intercalated by trituberculated main ribs, is similar to the one of the assumed ancestor Acrioceras, whereas the increasing curvation of the younger forms resembles similar patterns observed in the descendant Toxoc- eratoides. These characters support the hypothesis of a direct evolutionary lineage from Acrioceras via Dissimilites to Toxoceratoides. D. intermedius sp. nov. ranges from the upper Lower Barremian (Moutoniceras moutonianum Zone) to the lower Upper Barremian (Toxancyloceras vandenheckii Zone). The new species allows to better understand the evolu- tion of the genus Dissimilites. The genus appears within the Nicklesia pulchella Zone represented by D. duboise, which most likely evolved into D. dissimilis. In the Kotetishvilia compressissima Zone, two morphological forms developed: smaller forms very similar to Acrioceras and forms with very long shaft and juvenile spire like in D. intermedius sp. nov. Twenty-two species (among which six new ones) of the following Early Cretaceous ammonite genera are described: Crioceratites (C. leivaensis sp. nov.), Pedioceras (P. asymmetricum sp. nov.), Paracrioceras, Hamulinites, Karsteniceras (K. multicostatum sp. nov.), Hamiticeras (H. chipatai sp. nov.), Tonohamites, Ancyloceras, Pseudocrioceras, Pseudoaustraliceras, Ptychoceras, Colchidites, Protanisoceras [P. (P.) creutzbergi sp. nov.]. One new genus is proposed: Monsalveiceras gen. nov. (M. monsalvense sp. nov.). Résumé : une nouvelle espèce du Barrémien inférieur, Paracrioceras giraudae sp. nov., est classée dans genre Paracrioceras Spath, 1924, dont la compréhension a été récemment révisée. La position stratigraphique de Paracrioceras giraudae sp. nov. n’a pas été précisée lors de sa mise en collection. Cette espèce est, comme les autres espèces du genre Paracrioceras Spath, 1924, située dans le Barrémien inférieur, dans la Zone à Kotetishvilia nicklesi. C’est à partir du genre Criosarasinella Thieuloy, 1977 du Valanginien supérieur, qu’apparaissent les Crioceratitidae Gill, 1871 et en particulier le genre Crioceratites Leveille, 1837 dont les espèces les plus anciennes apparaissent dans l’Hauterivien inférieur. Sur le plan stratigraphique, entre les différentes espèces de ces deux genres apparaissent des espèces intermédiaires dont l’association des caractères morpho- logiques des spécimens ne permettent pas de les classer totalement ni dans le genre Criosarasinella Thieuloy, 1977 ni dans le genre Crioceratites Leveille, 1837. Nous créons donc pour ces espèces le genre Procrioceratites gen. nov. et désignons Pro- crioceratites etiennei sp. nov. comme l’espèce-type de notre nouveau genre. The complex and ornate carbon-isotope excursion of the lower Aptian Oceanic Anoxic Event (OAE) 1a is used as a potent means of worldwide marine correlations that has the potential to provide an independent control based on controversial ammonite dating. Re-examination of the best-documented expanded sections of the Tethyan, Boreal, and Pacific realms highlight the inconsistent positioning of ammonite key markers – mainly Deshayesitidae and Douvilleiceratidae – relative to the OAE 1a carbon- isotope excursion. This is not only due to taxonomic issues and substantial provincialism but also the weaknesses in the stratigraphic record caused by the sedimentary context of that oceanic anoxic event. Much detailed study and refinement of existing data are needed to reduce volatility in ammonite zonal boundaries from around the Barremian/Aptian boundary. Keywords.
