LAMBSIDE HOUSE: USEFUL INFORMATION

COMPLETE GUIDE TO YOUR COTTAGE Aga There is an electric aga. The oven will usually be left on ‘tick over’ at 150°C when you arrive. To change it, simply open the front left panel to find the control box and change the temperature using the up and down arrows. Set it to 200°C for normal cooking (this is the temperature of the top oven). The hobs are usually left at zero - simply turn them up as required for cooking – they will take about 10 minutes to heat up. Please DO NOT leave them above setting 4 with the lids down as you will blow the electrics! There is an excellent guide to using the aga and some recipe ideas in the drawer to the right of the aga. Arrival Your cottage will be ready for your arrival from 4.30pm. Please do not arrive early as time is needed to thoroughly clean the cottage and carry out any required maintenance. You will find the key to your cottage in a key safe which can be found to the right of the patio door. The key safe code is 9100. Barns The barns and yard beside the house are out of bounds. Barn doors should all be locked but please make sure that young adventurers are stopped from exploring. BBQ There is a charcoal BBQ which lives in the outside shed. Please feel free to use it but please put it away again when you’ve finished so it doesn’t get wet. Please make sure it is clean after each use. Candles A few candles can be found in the drawer under the microwave in case of emergencies. Cleaning We are lucky to live in such a wonderful Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and materials we are trying to do everything we can to keep it this way. We are therefore committed to trying to use cleaning materials that do not harm the environment. The orange power, washroom cleaner, toilet cleaner, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets and hand soap provided all meet stringent environmental criteria set by the South Hams Green Tourism Business Scheme. Please do use them as required, and then leave them for the next guests. Damage deposit Your damage deposit is refundable providing there is no damage to fixtures, fittings or inventory, and no excessive cleaning required. Damages Please report any damage or breakages as soon as possible. This allows us to buy replacements or organise repairs before the next visitors arrive. Departure Please leave by 10am on the day of your departure. This allows us time to clean and prepare properly for the next guests. We would be very grateful if you could make sure you leave the cottage clean and tidy, particularly making sure that you have cleaned the fire grate & BBQ if you

have used them and it would be very helpful if you could strip the beds. Please lock the door and return the key to the key safe. Also each individual radiator has a temperature control knob on it and so can be turned up or down individually as required. Hot water The hot water is provided by a biomass boiler. The boiler will fill the large hot water storage tank whenever required and so you should have a constant supply of hot water at all times. In an EMERGENCY ONLY there is an immersion heater. The switch is the cupboard at the top of the stairs. Inventory The cottage is very well equipped, please click here to see the inventory. Internet access There is free internet access at the Cottage. We want everyone to enjoy this magical area, so please do make sure that children are supervised at all times and play safely. Please also be aware that, whilst we have taken all precautions to make this area safe, you use it at your own risk. Other guests have access to the play area too, so please wipe down any equipment after you use it and before you leave the area and observe social distancing measures. You are very welcome to walk your dogs in the meadow but please be considerate of other guests, especially children, and make sure your dog is always under control. Please DO NOT allow your dog to foul in the meadow and, if an accident does happen, please make sure that you clear up thoroughly. Store cupboard We will leave fairtrade tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper. Sometimes we will leave essentials you some apples or eggs from our free range organic chickens, depending on the time of year and what is in season. Telephone Lambside House has a telephone for incoming and 999 calls only. It is in the children’s playroom and the master bedroom. The number is 01752 872752. Utility room Please use this for storing things like coats, fishing rods, wetsuits, and for washing and cleaning (especially muddy footwear!). The washing machine and dryer are for your use and there is a washing line at the front right of the house. Washing There are instructions in the manual in the kitchen but it is very straightforward. In machine & Dryer line with our environmental policy, we have put two laundry ‘aqua balls’ for you to use to wash your clothes. These use no detergents, and so are not only better for your skin but are better for the environment. They are easy to use; simply place the two Aqua Balls in the machine drum on top of the washing, select chosen programme and start wash.

To help us with our environmental aims, please do try to dry washing naturally – there is an airer for use inside and the rotary line is at the front right side of the house which gets lots of sunshine! If you must use the tumble dryer, it is easy to use - the operating instructions are in the Manuals File if you need them. Woodburner The woodburner is easy to use. You won’t need fire lighters, just a good bundle of newspaper and plenty of kindling. To close down the fire at night, close the slits in the doors and the fire will burn more slowly.

WALKING If you like walking, you’ve come to the right place – there are enough walks nearby to last a lifetime! Children and dogs are in heaven here, either on the coast path, on the vast expanses of sand at Mothecombe or on the wide open spaces of Dartmoor. Please note Lambside House is located in a rural area surrounded by farmland. Please walk with care, paying attention to signs and shutting gates behind you. Keep your dog on the lead when on farmland and don’t let your dog chase sheep or cattle. South West The South West Coast Path offers plenty of tremendous walks not far from your Coast Path cottage. To reach the South West Coast Path on foot, turn right out of Lambside House (heading east) and follow the lane until you reach the road that runs parallel to the sea. Turn right along this road and walk until you see a stile – hop over and follow the lane until you come to the coast path. Turn left to head towards St. Anchorite’s Rock and Mothecombe (do check out The School House for a drink or meal!) or turn right towards Wadham Beach, The Tea House, Stoke Beach and eventually Noss Mayo (about 7 miles away via the coast path). Drive a short distance to find even more spectacular coastal scenery – drive to Noss Mayo (2 miles), walk along the Yealm Estuary then follow the section of coast path known as Revelstoke Drive; drive to Bigbury-on-Sea (14 miles) then walk west past Challaborough, Ayrmer Cove and Wyscombe Beach towards Wonwell Beach; drive to Bantham (16 miles) then walk eastwards past Thurlestone, South Milton Sands and Hope Cove; or drive to Salcombe (19 miles) then follow the coast path past Overbeck’s, Soar Mill Cove, and Bolberry Down towards Bolt Tail. Visit the South West Coast Path website for more ideas. Dartmoor Dartmoor is home to fantastic views and spectacular rural scenery. The national park offers a great contrast to the coast and is a must to visit, particularly for those who enjoy walking and for families looking for plenty of space to run and play. There are numerous walking options on Dartmoor, find inspiration on the Visit Dartmoor website. Why not try a circular walk followed by lunch in a Dartmoor village pub, such as The Royal Oak in Meavy (17 miles), The Rock Inn at Haytor (28 miles), The Rugglestone Inn in Widecombe-in-the-Moor (35 miles). The nearest entrance to the moors is at Ivybridge (9 miles). Princetown (22 miles) is known as being the rugged home of Dartmoor Prison and also has a fantastic information centre and brewery. Dartmoor’s highest village is a good starting point for exploring the High Moor plus an old disused railway provides a great cycle route leading to Yelverton.

www.carswellcottages.com 01752 830020 [email protected]

16

The circular drive from Carswell to Ashburton (22 miles) then over the moor to Tavistock (24 miles from Carswell) and back to Carswell is a great way to spend a day. BEACHES Wadham Beach Wadham Beach is the nearest beach to the cottage, a peaceful option which is (1 mile) good for swimming (but please take normal precautions). Walk to the coast path then turn right and walk down into a big dip. Head towards the sea instead of following signs to walk up a big hill, and you will see a gate at the bottom of the lowest field. Go down the steps to Wadham beach through the gate. The Blue Lagoon Carswell Cottage guests can access our private cove, which we call The Blue (1.5 miles) Lagoon. Follow the directions above to reach the coast path, turn left and head for St. Anchorite’s Rock then continue for about 50 yards until you see a gate in the fence. Walk down the steep hill at 45o and head for the middle of the hedge at the bottom of the field. As you get closer you will see a gate hidden in the middle of the hedge, padlocked shut. The combination for the lock is 4321 or 54321 – you will need to remember this! Go through this gate (please close and lock it behind you) and go down the rough path. PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL as the path is steep, including some steps at the bottom. Please use this path at your own risk and with great care…Once there the Blue Lagoon is enchanting. We recommend taking a picnic and spending a sunny day there - you won’t regret it! Mothecombe Mothecombe Beach (officially called Meadowsfoot) is privately owned by the Flete (3 miles) Estate but access is allowed at any time. The beach can be accessed by walking about 1 hour along the coast path and has 150 acres of sand at low tide - spectacular and an absolute must. Visitors can also wade across the River Erme to the neighbouring Wonwell Beach. Dogs are not allowed on the main beach during the summer months. Parking is available at a small charge in a field by the fantastic Schoolhouse Restaurant. To reach the beach by car, drive to Battisborough Cross then turn right and follow the signs for Mothecombe. Bigbury-on-Sea Bigbury-on-Sea is a popular beach for families, with rock pools and a great expanse (14 miles) of sand at low tide which creates a causeway to historic Burgh Island. There are lifeguards present during the summer months, a beach café and water sports including surfing and paddle boarding. Bantham Bantham is one of the most popular beaches in the area for surfers and families (16 miles) alike, located on the opposite side of the River Avon to Bigbury-on-Sea. The shallow waters are perfect for children to play and learn to surf, while a huge area of sand is exposed at low tide. Lifeguards are on duty during the summer months. A couple of food trucks serve drinks, snacks and larger meals including burgers and pizza. Dogs are not permitted on the main beach during the summer months but are allowed on the area beside the river. Wembury Wembury is a family-friendly beach with a National Trust car park, clean waters, (10.5 miles) plenty of sand and lots of rockpools for children to explore.
