WEEKEND TRADITION THAT BEGAN 17 YEARS AGO (CHICAGO, IL) The Auditorium Theatre is thrilled to announce its 2021-22 Season, with Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater officially reopening the historic stage on October 16, 2021. Subscriptions are now on sale, and tickets to individual productions will go on sale on August 13 and October 27. "We are thrilled to share with Chicago our 2021–22 Season, and welcome back audiences to our National Historic Landmark," said Auditorium Theatre CEO Rich Regan. "For over 131 years, the Auditorium Theatre has captured our hearts and sparked our imaginations through the collective experience of live performance, and this season is no different! There is something for everyone here: music, dance, and lectures featuring the finest performers from all over the globe including the very best artists from Chicago." The International Dance Series opens in February with Ballet Folklórico de México de Amalia Hernández celebrating their 70th anniversary! Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater makes its annual visit to Chicago where the company has been performing at the Auditorium for over 50 years. Ballet Hispánico presents the Chicago premiere of a new full-length work about the life of Eva Perón, and Eifman Ballet of St. Petersburg brings back a reimagined version of their infamous Russian Hamlet. The “Made in Chicago” Dance Series continues to highlight the city’s world- renowned dance companies. Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater's performance will reopen the theatre in October with the company's year-long celebration of their 45th anniversary, followed a week later by Deeply Rooted Dance Theater presenting the world-premiere of a work dedicated to Quincy Jones. In 2022, Trinity Irish Dance Company returns to the Auditorium once again with a program focusing on the company’s powerful women dancers, and Giordano Dance Chicago closes the 2021-22 Season with a high-energy evening from America's original jazz dance company. The Music Series features the Auditorium Theatre's signature production of Too Hot to Handel: The Jazz Gospel Messiah, an annual tradition every Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The complete 2021-22 Music Series is still being curated and will be announced this fall. The Auditorium Theatre's National Geographic Live speaker series will feature photographer and filmmaker Ami Viatale in Wild Hope; paleontologist Nizar Ibrahim in Spinosaurus: Lost Giant of the Cretaceous; and biologist-turned-photographer Ronan Donovan in Social by Nature. Ticket Information Renewals and subscription packages will be available starting today, June 16, 2021. Group discounts available for groups of 10-40 @ 20% and 40+ @ 25%. Discounted group tickets may be reserved with a 25% deposit by contacting 312.341.2300 or [email protected]. Tickets to individual productions scheduled through January 23 go on sale August 13 @ 9AM, and shows scheduled February 12 through June 11 go on sale October 27 @ 9AM. The Auditorium Theatre offers a variety of special ticket offers to community groups, students, and young professionals throughout the season. The ADMIT ONE program provides complimentary tickets to Chicago-area community groups that face obstacles to attending live performances. Through ADMIT ONE, community groups receive tickets to events at the Auditorium Theatre, in addition to free round-trip transportation, if available. The Auditorium Theatre also offers $15 student rush tickets to full-time college students, and $5 tickets to young people ages 13-19 with Urban Gateways' Teen Arts Pass program. With “whirling, kaleidoscopic splendor” (Boston Globe), the Auditorium Theatre’s Visiting Resident Company journeys from the ancient Aztec era to modern day through dances inspired by rituals, revolutions, and festivals. Featuring the renowned choreography of company founder Amalia Hernández, who “brought a brilliant visual and theatrical sense to her dances” (The New York Times) and live music provided by the Ballet Folklórico de México ensemble. Led by Artistic Director and CEO Eduardo Vilaro, who founded Chicago’s legendary Luna Negra Dance Theater, this innovative company has been celebrating and exploring Latinx cultures through innovative dance performances for over 50 years. “Ballet Hispánico is an example of what makes our country beautiful. Eifman explores the full spectrum of human emotions in this story ballet that serves as “a catalyst for re-examining the soul- crushing alienation of unbridled ambition” (Chicago Tribune). "MADE IN CHICAGO" DANCE SERIES Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater Saturday, October 16, 2021 @ 7:30PM “Style, flair, and bravura are never lacking” (Chicago Tribune) when this world-renowned company returns to the Auditorium with its fiery blend of flamenco, folkloric, traditional, and contemporary styles. Celebrating their 45th anniversary season titled “Zafiro Flamenco (Sapphire Flamenco): New Era, New Works, New Legacies,” the Chicago-based company brings the spirit of España to this one-night- only performance. Featuring passionate dancers, live flamenco music, and vibrant costumes, Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater “never [fails] to demonstrate a grand theatricality, precision-tooled technique, and flamenco-based fire” (Chicago Tonight). Deeply Rooted Dance Theater Saturday, October 23, 2021 @ 7:30PM Reimagining contemporary dance by uniting modern, classical, American, and African- American traditions, this remarkable company, celebrating its 25th anniversary, makes its full-evening debut on the Auditorium Theatre’s historic stage. WTTW says “Deeply Rooted dancers set the stage on fire. The dancers are striking, with superb technique and an emotional heat ideally fitted to the choreography.” The program features works by nationally renowned choreographers including the world premiere of an untitled work dedicated to Quincy Jones by Deeply Rooted’s Artistic Director Nicole Clarke-Springer. Unboxed features choreographers Yin Yue, Edwaard Liang, and Peter Chu using their voices and vocabularies to imagine their own versions of the Chinese Tea variation from The Nutcracker. These Asian and Asian-American dance-makers engaged in three-day workshops with Hubbard Street dancers exploring the questions: “What are the traditions we want to protect?” and “What do we want to leave behind?” Unboxed welcomes viewers to tear free from the confines of tradition and invites audiences to glimpse the promise of a future rewritten. HSDC is challenging what is known as canon, in this case, the Chinese Tea variation from The Nutcracker to ask, “Can a dance, only a minute long but fraught with stereotypes, exist within a more inclusive future?” Hubbard Street Dance Associate Artistic Director, Jessica Tong says “the idea for Unboxed was always about challenging conventions and stereotypes.     LETTER FROM OUR DIRECTOR Millions of men have lived to fight, build palaces and boundaries, shape destinies and societies; but the compelling force of all times has been the force of originality and creation profoundly affecting the roots of human spirit. —Ansel Adams When handled by a master, the arts act as a creative force that open a conversation, expand our understanding and have us reconsider our perceptions. After looking back last season on the milestone of 40 years of presenting, this season focuses on the creative process — new visions and new perspectives. Attending a dance concert inspired Ira Glass to re-explore the elements of storytelling — showcasing the similarities between his flavor of journalism and contemporary choreography. Doug Varone exposes his creative process to share the impact of the individual’s choices as part of the final artistic expression of his work. Rohina Malik brings a new voice to a greater cultural understanding of our Muslim neighbors. These are the kinds of conversations that have most intrigued me in my 15 years as executive director at the Edison Theatre. Columbia audiences will be blown away by the caliber of choreographers and dancers that have been assembled by Artistic/Executive director Karen Grundy. In addition to world premieres by Grundy and Resident Choreographer Fernando Rodriguez, ‘Intersections’ features original works by guest choreographers Sean Carmon (New York), Alice Bloch (St. Louis), and Joshua Blake Carter (Chicago). Presented by the University of Missouri Concert Series, ‘Intersections’ th th will be performed November 16 ​ and 17 ​ at the historic Missouri Theatre. ​ ​ The full company of nine professional dancers will take the stage in ‘Intersections’. Dancers travel from all across the country and internationally to perform full-time with Missouri Contemporary Ballet. Current company dancers hail from Michigan, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, North Dakota, West Virginia and Brazil. Simmons College, BA Education and Psychology. For the past two decades, Ann has performed with all of Boston’s major modern and jazz dance companies, including Peter DiMuro and Associates, Back Porch Dancers, and Dance Collective of Boston, and has toured New England, New York, and Europe. She has also been a guest artist with several ballet companies. Molly Baechtold, Part-time Instructor of Aerial Dance. University of New Hampshire. BA Studio Art with minors in dance and philosophy. In college, Molly studied static trapeze and silks intensively and performed with the UNH dance company for four years. Since graduating, she has performed professionally in musicals at several regional theatres, trained with Cirque Du Soleil's Ivo Georgiev in New York City, and danced in Times Square for Cirque Du Soleil's 25th anniversary celebration. She currently shares her love for aerial arts by performing at corporate events, galas, and special events with her trapeze partner, Erin Sullivan, in Airly Acrobatics. Molly is currently teaching circus arts at Trapeze School New York, and several other schools in the area. Ian Berg, Part-time Instructor of Tap. The Boston Conservatory. BFA Contemporary Dance Performance. Ian is a Boston-based tap dancer from Chicago, Illinois. He is trained in tap, ballet, modern, jazz, and improvisation. He studied at the Joffrey Academy and danced with MADD Rhythms, and is an alumnus from the School at Jacob's Pillow along with the Boston Conservatory.

    Dance Program Newsletter 2020-2021 DANCING ON THE HILL The WKU Dance Program made many adjustments this academic school year to follow COVID-19 protocol and social distancing. This experience was an incredible learning opportunity that opened new windows of communication and exploration. To allow for social distancing, students were spaced out in studios, and some courses were moved to the Preston Activity Center on campus. Masks were required among all dancers and faculty for both classes and performances. Virtual learning and master classes offered new opportunities and connections between dancers, faculty, and guest artists. The WKU Dance Company members participated in both live and virtual performance opportunities in the fall and spring. Dance Program Newsletter 2020-2021 The WKU Summer Dance Intensive is designed for high school dancers as a unique opportunity to S explore college level dance and the WKU experience. The event embraces the Dance Program's D mission of "creating thinking artists" and provides students with a variety of classes to enhance their technical and artistic skills. Students engage in dance technique and movement theory classes and I have the opportunity to learn WKU Dance Company repertoire. The week-long intensive culminates in a performance featuring university faculty and guest artist choreography. Unique to summer '21, all participating dancers are required to reside in the dorms, thus gaining a complete college experience as faculty work to keep everyone healthy. Selected WKU dance majors serve as RA's and accompany 2 dancers throughout the intensive.
