THE STORY Based on the Stephen King’s first novel, Carrie is the story of a high school girl with telekinetic powers. Bullied by classmates and abused by her overbearing mother, Carrie finds herself on a path toward independence and acceptance by her peers- until everything comes to a brutal end on prom night. THE CAST • Carrie White • Margaret White- Carrie’s mother • Sue Snell- the first to befriend Carrie; the story is told from her memories • Tommy Ross- Sue’s boyfriend who takes Carrie to the prom • Chris Hargenson- Carrie’s biggest foe, determined to bring her down from her ascent • Billy Nolan- Chris’ boyfriend and cruel partner in crime • Reverend Bliss- church leader • Mr. Stephens- English teacher/guidance counselor • Ms. Gardner- PE teacher • Named Students- George, Freddy, Frieda, Stokes, Helen, Norma • Chorus- students and other smaller roles The cast will feature ~25 performers (principals and chorus). THE PRODUCTION Attendance at all rehearsals is mandatory for principals and for support cast as needed. “We Walk Your Dog at Night!”: An Interview with Stephen King by John C. Tibbetts Stephen King is a phenomenon. He is without question the most popular writer of horror fiction of all time. In l973 he was living with his family in a trailor in Hampden, Maine, struggling to make a living as a high school teacher, when he published his first novel, Carrie, a tale of a girl with telekinetic powers. Its sales in hardcover were modest (l3,000) but enough to inspire a paperback reprint and a popular film adaption by Brian De Palma in l976. His “breakthrough” book, Salem's Lot, came out that year and quickly sold 3,000,000 copies. Within the next four years The Shining, The Stand, Night Shift, and The Dead Zone—all best-selling horror fiction—established King as the reigning Master of the Macabre. When he co- authored The Talisman in l984 with Peter Straub [See the Straub interview elsewhere in these pages], it was a publishing event unparalleled in modern times. Today over l00 million copies of his books are in print. King's work is frankly derivative of the traditions of l9th century gothic horror. Carrie is written in the style of the "epistolary" novel of the late l8th century. Salem's Lot is an update on Bram Stoker's vampire novel, Dracula. Christine is a variant on Oscar Wilde's The Portrait of Dorian Gray. Pet Sematary is a retelling of W. W. Jacobs' "The Monkey's Paw." And The Dark Half draws from the rich vein of "doppelganger" stories by Poe, Hoffmann, and Stevenson.

11/22/1963 By Stephen King (Discussion Questions) About the Author: Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947 and grew up in Durham, Maine. He attended the University of Maine at Orono, where he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, The Maine Campus. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate, and supporting the anti-war movement. King graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, with a B.A. in English. He married Tabitha Spruce in 1971. King sprang onto the literary scene with the publication of Carrie (Doubleday, 1974) which was later made into a movie. The success of Carrie allowed him to leave his high school teaching position and write full-time. Other bestselling novels followed including The Shining, The Stand and The Dead Zone. RE-ANIMATED: THE CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN HORROR FILM REMAKE, 2003-2013 Thesis submitted by Laura Mee In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy De Montfort University, March 2014 Abstract This doctoral thesis is a study of American horror remakes produced in the years 2003-2013, and it represents a significant academic intervention into an understanding of the horror remaking trend. It addresses the remaking process as one of adaptation, examines the remakes as texts in their own right, and situates them within key cultural, industry and reception contexts. It also shows how remakes have contributed to the horror genre’s evolution over the last decade, despite their frequent denigration by critics and scholars. Chapter One introduces the topic, and sets out the context, scope and approach of the work. Chapter Two reviews the key literature which informs this study, considering studies in adaptation, remaking, horror remakes specifically, and the genre more broadly. Chapter Three explores broad theoretical questions surrounding the remake’s position in a wider culture of cinematic recycling and repetition, and issues of fidelity and taxonomy. Chapter Four examines the ‘reboots’ of one key production company, exploring how changes are made across versions even as promotion relies on nostalgic connections with the originals. Chapter Five discusses a diverse range of slasher film remakes to show how they represent variety and contribute to genre development. Chapter Six considers socio-political themes in 1970s horror films and their contemporary post-9/11 remakes, and Chapter Seven focuses on gender representation and recent genre trends in the rape-revenge remake.
