It can be further divided into peripheral odontogenic fibroma (PODF) and central odontogenic fibroma (CODF). This retrospective study evaluated the clinical and histopathological features of 15 ODFs in Taiwanese patients. Methods: Fifteen consecutive cases of ODF were collected from 1984 to 2009. The clinical data and micro- scopic features of these cases were reviewed and analyzed. Results: Twelve PODFs were excised from six male and six female patients (mean age: 35 years) and three CODFs from two male and one female patients (mean age: 11 years). Eight of the 12 PODFs were found on the mandibular gingiva and four on the maxillary gingiva, with the most common site being the mandibular anterior and premolar region (5 cases). Two CODFs were located in the molar region of the mandible and one in the anterior maxilla. Two CODFs showed a mixed lesion and one a radiolucent lesion.

  • Optical Microscopic, Microradiographic and Scanning Electron Microscopic Observations of Some Dens Invaginatus
Original J. Showa Univ. Dent. Soc. 15: 7-16, 1995 Optical Microscopic, Microradiographic and Scanning Electron Microscopic Observations of Some Dens Invaginatus Tetsuo KODAKAand Shohei HIGASHI SecondDepartment of Oral Anatomy,Showa University School of Dentistry 1-5-8 Hatanodai,Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, 142 Japan (Chief:Prof. ShoheiHigashi) Abstract: The simple or branched invaginations of dens invaginatus were histologically observed by using 6 ground sections (2 molars and 4 incisors). In all the teeth, the invagina- tions have hypoplastic enamel showing a variable thickness and an irregular outline. The rel- atively thick enamel irregularly arranged the Retzius lines and prismless structures were present in the innermost layers besides the surface layers. In 4 teeth, enamel-free areas were partially found on the dentin surfaces, and afibrillar cementum occasionally covered the enamel-free areas as well as the enamel surfaces. The dentin of a molar tooth had giant tubules between the dichotomously branched invaginations and other giant tubules opened into the invagination floor. Some dentinal tubules in the terminal regions had abnormal structures similar to the Tomes' granules adjacent to the invaginations of the 2 molar teeth. In all the incisor teeth, a seam line of dentin fusion or a slit line succeeding to the dental pulp cavity was present in the dentin under the linguogingival ridge. Thus, the gross formation of dens invaginatus also causes the invagination to form locally abnormal structures, especially in the enamel regions; although some findings have been previously reported. Key words: dens in dente, invagination, prismless enamel, afibrillar cementum, enamel-free area It is strongly suggested that most of the dens lar cementum25) including cementicle-like globular in dente, recently named dens invaginatus, are structures26) on the floors, although the dentin formed by the abnormal infolding of an enamel under the fissures generally shows a normal organ towards the dental papilla during a tooth structure.

  • Oral Histology Lec.1 Lab.1 Preparation of Histological Specimens
Oral Histology Lec.1 Lab.1 Dr.Munir Nasr Preparation of histological specimens Histology (compound of the Greek words: histo “tissue”, and logy “science”) is the study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues of plants and animals. It is commonly performed by examining cells and tissues by sectioning and staining, followed by examination under a light or electron microscopes. Histological studies may be conducted via tissue culture, where live cells can be isolated and maintained in a proper environment outside the body for various research projects. The ability to visualize or differentially identify microscopic structures is frequently enhanced through the use of histological stains. The steps of sample preparations: 1. Tissue fixation 2.Tissue processing 3. Tissue cutting or sectioning 4. Tissue staining Tissue fixation Fixation is a complex series of chemical events that differ for the different groups of substance found in tissues. The aim of fixation: 1- To prevent autolysis and bacterial attack. 2- To fix the tissues so they will not change their volume and shape during processing. 3 - To prepare tissue and leave it in a condition which allow clear staining of sections. 1 4 . To leave tissue as close as their living state as possible, and no small molecules should be lost. Fixation is coming by reaction between the fixative and protein which form a gel, so keeping everything as their in vivo relation to each other. Factors affect fixation: -PH. -Temperature. -Penetration of fixative. -Volume of tissue. According to previous factors we can determine the concentration of fixative and fixation time. Types of fixative: Acetic acid, Formaldehyde, Ethanol, Glutaraldehyde, Methanol and Picric acid.

  • Dental Follicle, Hyperplasia, Odontogenic Fibroma
    J. Nihon Univ Sch. Dent., Vol. 33, 166-173, 1991 Pathological Study of the Hyperplastic Dental Follicle Yohko FUKUTA 1, Morio TOTSUKA 1, Yasunori TAKEDA 2 and Hirotsugu YAMAMOTO 3 (Received 22 February and accepted 9 April 1991) Key words: dental follicle, hyperplasia, odontogenic fibroma, impacted tooth Abstract Eleven specimens of hyperplastic dental follicles were studied clinicopath- ologically, with reference to the patient's sex and age at the time of diagnosis, site of the lesions, and histopathology. The patients comprised 6 males and 5 females with an average age of 15.7 years (range 10 to 23 years). Two cases involved multiple lesions, and 9 a single lesion. The lesions were related to impaction of the canine, second premolar, second molar or third molar. Radiographically, the lesions showed various degrees of radiolucency around the crown of the impacted tooth. Most of the cases were diagnosed clinically as dentigerous cyst. The histopathological features of the lesions were similar to those of normal dental follicular tissue around the developing tooth. No tumorous features such as odontogenic fibroma, odontogenic myxoma or myxofibroma were evident in the lesions. Introduction Hyperplastic dental follicle around an embedded tooth is an asymptomatic lesion occasionally showing slight swelling in the affected area. It appears radio- graphically as a well circumscribed cystic radiolucency surrounding the crown of the impacted tooth and has often been misdiagnosed clinically as dentigerous cyst. Histologically, such hyperplastic dental follicles are composed of a mass of densely or loosely arranged connective tissue containing scattered odontogenic epithelial rests, and such findings have been confused with odontogenic fibroma, odontogenic myxoma, odontogenic myxofibroma or other odontogenic tumors.

ABSTRACT Localised gingival enlargements are commonly seen in the oral cavity. Most of these lesions are reactive and non-neoplastic in nature. Clinically it is always not possible to differentiate one specific gingival enlargement from other. Confirmatory diagnosis is made by histologic analysis. Peripheral ossifying fibroma(POF) is one such entity the confirmatory diagnosis of which is made by histopathological features. It is a reactive beningn lesion. The present case report describes a 20- year- old male, who visited the Department of Periodontology with the chief compliant of swelling of gums in the upper front teeth region since 3 months. His past dental history reveals that he had similar type of overgrowth 1year back and had undergone surgical excision 6months back. Intraoral examination revealed a solitary, pedunculated mass involving interdental papilla in relation to 11,21. His intraoral radiograph showed boneloss in relation to 11,21. Surgical excision of the lesion was done by scalpel method followed by histopathologic examination for confirmatory diagnosis. As the overgrowth was re-occurred in this patient the present case report mainly emphasis about the surgical procedure to be done and the close post operative follow up required.

Our previous studies have shown the presence of LCs in immunohisto- some odontogenic tumors and cysts. In this study, we further examined the presence of LCs in chemistry; odontogenic epithelia of 16 odontogenic fibromas (OFs). Langerhans cell; Methods: Anti-CD1a and anti-S-100 immunostains were used to detect the presence of LCs in odontogenic nests or strands of odontogenic epithelia of 16 OFs. epithelium; Results: These 16 OFs included 10 peripheral OFs excised from seven male and three female odontogenic fibroma; patients (mean age, 38 years) and six central OFs (including one recurrent OF) removed from S-100 protein five male patients (mean age, 28 years).

  • Concomitant Cemento-Osseous Dysplasia and Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Mandible: a Rare Case Report with Literature Review Han-Gyeol Yeom1 and Jung-Hoon Yoon2*
Yeom and Yoon BMC Oral Health (2020) 20:276 https://doi.org/10.1186/s12903-020-01264-7 CASE REPORT Open Access Concomitant cemento-osseous dysplasia and aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandible: a rare case report with literature review Han-Gyeol Yeom1 and Jung-Hoon Yoon2* Abstract Background: Concomitant cemento-osseous dysplasia (COD) and aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) are rare in the head and neck region. In our search of the English language literature, we found only one case report describing the simultaneous occurrence of COD and ABC in the head and neck region. Here, we report a case of COD associated with ABC. Further, we performed a systematic search of the literature to identify studies on patients with COD associated with nonepithelial lined cysts of the jaws. Case presentation: The patient was a 32-year-old woman who was referred from a private dental clinic because of a cystic lesion below the mandibular right first molar. She had no pain or significant systemic disease. After performing panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography, the imaging diagnosis was COD with a cystic lesion, such as ABC or solitary bone cyst. Excisional biopsy was performed, which revealed concomitant COD and ABC. Conclusion: This case of ABC associated with COD provides insight for the diagnostic process of radiographically mixed lesions with cystic changes.
