We are especially excited to celebrate this evening with you in Appleby’s new, 80,000 square foot, state-of-the-art A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life. Tonight marks the first (of many) community events to be held in this extraordinary facility. Thank you for your support in helping to make this landmark addition to our campus possible and enhancing the educational experience of our students.

Tonight’s Field of Dreams would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of Alexandra Blum, Gala Chair, the Gala Committee members, and the many parent volunteers and employees who have worked tirelessly in planning this evening’s festivities.

We are also grateful for the many donors and sponsors who contributed to this year’s gala – from the live and silent auction items to gifts-in-kind. Your support has had a direct impact on the success of tonight's gala and is greatly appreciated.

Tonight, you have the opportunity to support two of Appleby’s philanthropic priorities: student financial assistance and the funding of the new A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life. Both initiatives are committed to the advancement of the Appleby experience for all. Additional details can be found on pages 4 and 109.

Thank you for joining us this evening and for your support of Appleby College!

1 Letter from the Gala Chair

Welcome to Appleby College’s Gala Field of Dreams. It is an honour to celebrate this evening with you – marking the first Appleby community event to take place in the new, state-of-the-art A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life!

As Chair, it has been my great pleasure to work alongside an extraordinary committee of parent volunteers who have worked tirelessly in making this evening possible. Thank you to the Gala Executive Team of Eva Alaali, Shereen Aly, Jennifer Buckley, Claudia Eichhorn, Baillie Howard, Jenny Ma, Sarah McMillan, and Ann Watkin for taking part in over 40 event planning meetings. Also, a special thank you to the 17 members of the Gala Committee and the many Appleby employees who over the past 19 months have volunteered their time, expertise and creative talent in supporting this year’s gala.

I encourage you to take some time to review the contents of this program, which provides a wonderful overview of what’s in store for you this evening – including the silent and live auction items carefully selected to meet varied culinary, travel and entertainment interests. You will not be disappointed!

By being here this evening and participating in the festivities, the generous contributions that will be made will help support the school’s two philanthropic priorities: student financial assistance and the funding of the new A.W.B. Alumni Centre for Athletics and Student Life. Both initiatives will have an extraordinary impact on the Appleby community for many years to come.

Thank you for your support and enjoy the evening!

Alexandra Blum Gala Chair

14 15 Table Side Games Heads & Tails

This is always a highlight of the Appleby College Gala. This year, it’s winner's choice with a $2,500 gift certificate to Knar Jewellery! Select from timepieces that include Rolex, Breitling and Grand Seiko, or a jewel from one of many fine collections including Forevermark Diamonds, Mikimoto and Chopard. This gift certificate can be used towards any items or services (such as custom design or restyling) offered by Knar Jewellery and does not expire.

Game Rules

• You will find an envelope marked “Heads and Tails” on your table. If you are interested in participating in the game, please deposit $20 per player before the game begins. • Listen for the cue to play, everyone will be asked to stand and congregate on the dance floor. • On the count of three, each participant puts their hands on their “head” or on their “tail.” • The auctioneer flips a coin and announces heads or tails. • Those who have their hands on the correct corresponding body part are still in the game and remain standing; the others sit down to watch the rest of the game. • The auctioneer then starts another round, asking the remaining participants to place their hands on their “head” or on their “tail.” The coin is flipped and elimination continues. The last person standing is declared the winner.

108 Appleby College's Financial Assistance Programme A world class education not only requires exceptional faculty, programmes, and facilities, it also demands a diverse socioeconomic student body. Having a talented range of students, regardless of their backgrounds, is one of the central hallmarks of great schools and it’s a vital part of the Appleby College experience that benefits the whole community.

Today, financial assistance is provided to students in the form of need-based bursaries, loans and merit scholarships. Over 90 per cent of Appleby’s financial assistance is provided through bursaries. The remainder are loans or scholarships. This includes two of the school’s hallmark programmes – the Centennial Scholars Programme and Global Access Programme, which offer full support to recipients, including tuition costs, incidental fees and boarding costs.

Currently, over 18 per cent of Appleby families receive financial assistance annually. But we’re not stopping there. We have ambitious plans to increase the percentage of students receiving financial assistance to the range of 20 to 25 per cent by 2021. Thanks to generous donor support, we are excited to see this number grow year-over-year as we work to achieve this goal.

Compared to other leading independent schools, Appleby funds less of its financial assistance from philanthropy. This is a consequence of our relatively small endowment and lower levels of gift support.

It is our goal for an increasing proportion of financial assistance to come from donations and endowment, ensuring the sustainability and future growth of this key deliverable.

109 Appleby’s Financial Assistance Programme changes lives, and with the continued support of parents, alumni and alumni parents, financial assistance will continue to have an extraordinary impact on the Appleby community for many years to come.
