Date completed: July 1977 Problem One of the major concerns in education today is the improve­ ment of behavior. Over the years various strategies have been pro­ posed to modify human conduct. A careful review of these theories shows many similarities and divergences. Albert Bandura and Ellen G. White, two proponents from different eras and with widely disparate cultural and intellectual heritage, have strongly recommended modeling or example as the major factor in shaping human behavior. The present study sought to determine what, if any, similarities or differences exist in their modeling concepts. 11 Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. Procedure This investigation is a descriptive analytical study con­ cerned with concepts and philosophies. The general procedure of the study is conceptually oriented, moving from a broad overview of behavior modification toward basic conceptual aspects of modeling. After an introduction and a review of literature, two chapters provide the reader with necessary background material. Bandura's conceptual framework and experimental studies are discussed in the next two chapters. Then follows a synthesis of White's philosophy of example. Chapter VIII concentrates on the comparison, with ten concepts in Bandura's writings and experiments as the frame of reference. Chapter IX reports the writer's interview with Bandura. The summary, conclusions, and implications of the study are presented in the last chapter. Summary and Conclusions The modeling positions of Bandura and White are based on entirely different frames of reference. They bring to their writings divergent approaches, purposes, and values, and non­ corresponding philosophical orientations of human nature and reality. Significantly, in spite of these differences, Bandura's modeling concepts were found to corroborate the much earlier views of White. Commonalities exist in the following concepts: 1. Behavior is learned by obcerving the behavior of other human beings. 2. Real-life models are the basic sources of modeling influences. iii Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction prohibited without permission. 3. Modeling is a potent means of behavior transmission and modification. 4. Modeling involves different complex variables originating in the observer and the model. 5. Words and deeds do not possess equal power for changing behavior. 6. Children's behavior results from an interaction of parental modeling and other models in the immediate environment. 7. Parents establish conditions for learning and value acquisi­ tion of children during the children's early years. 8. Children are receptive and vulnerable to shaping influences in their environment. 9. Children's learning is facilitated and increased in a warm and supportive atmosphere. 10. Symbolic models are nearly equal to real-life models in effecting behavioral patterns. 11. Aggressive responses result from dangerous thoughts generated by exposure to aggressive symbolic models and generalize to new settings. 12. Some human models are more imitated than others because of their position, competencies, and responsibilities. 13. People choose as models associates with similar values and conduct patterns to themselves. 14. Reference-group models are sources of attitudes and values which are imparted by example. 15. A Schools are where teachers and children work. One of the goals of the National Educational Goals Panel (2000), an independent agency of the executive branch of the federal government, is the following: Every local educational agency will develop and implement a policy to ensure that all schools are free of violence and the unauthorized presence of weapons. The goal applies to the safety of students, faculty, and staff. The purpose of this chapter is threefold. First, the chapter summarizes what is known about the prevalence of violence and weapons in U.S. schools. Other prob- lematic behaviors that plague schools, including verbally assaultive behavior and drug use, are not addressed. Second, the chapter examines theories that bear on school violence and the empirical evidence linked to those theories. Third, the chapter looks at attempts to prevent school violence and, conse- quently, the suffering school violence causes. Cultural learning is identified with those instances of social learning in which intersubjectivity or perspective-taking plays a vital role, both in the original learning process and in the resulting cognitive product. Cultural learning manifests itself in three forms during human ontogeny: imitative learning, instructed learning, and collaborative learning - in that order. Evidence is provided that this progression arises from the developmental ordering of the underlying social-cognitive concepts and processes involved. Imitative learning relies on a concept of intentional agent and involves simple perspective-taking. Instructed learning relies on a concept of mental agent and involves alternating/coordinated perspective- taking (intersubjectivity). Collaborative learning relies on a concept of reflective agent and involves integrated perspective-taking (reflective intersubjectivity). Zentall University of Kentucky Observational learning is presumed to have occurred when an organism copies an improbable action or action outcome that it has observed and the matching behavior cannot be explained by an alternative mechanism. Psychologists have been particularly interested in the form of observational learning known as imitation and in how to distinguish imitation from other processes. To successfully make this distinction, one must disentangle the degree to which behavioral similarity results from (a) predisposed behavior, (b) increased motivation resulting from the presence of another animal, (c) attention drawn to a place or object, (d) learning about the way the environment works, as distinguished from what we think of as (e) imitation (the copying of the demonstrated behavior). Several of the processes that may be involved in observational learning are reviewed, including social facilitation, stimulus enhancement, several kinds of emulation, and various forms of imitation. With the reintroduction of a cognitive perspective in the 1950s (e.g., Miller 1956; Miller, Galanter, and Pribram 1960), researchers began to look for ways to integrate the behavioral and cognitive perspectives. Social learning theory, as developed by Neal Miller and John Dollard (1941), Robert Sears (1951), and Albert Bandura (1977), contributed to connecting behavioral and cognitive approaches to learning, and is an important step toward modern versions of learning theory. Bandura (1962), building on the earlier work of Miller and Dollard (1941), proposed that learning first occurs cognitively through imitation, and then is modified through the application of consequences. In contrast to a purely behavioral approach, social cognitive theorists propose that individuals are active participants in their own learning. Based on a series of studies during the 1960s and 1970s (e.g., Bandura 1963, 1965a), Bandura in 1977 proposed a four-step process for how individuals learn through observing others’ behavior. This process has been referred to as observational learning or modeling, and involves: • attention—the individual notices something in the environment; • retention—the individual remembers what was noticed; • reproduction—the individual produces an action that is a copy of what was noticed; • motivation—the environment delivers a consequence that changes the probability that the behavior will occur again (reinforcement and punishment).

The first part of this study answers three questions: “what is vicarious reinforcement?” “how does vicarious reinforcement take place in observational learning?” and “how does vi- carious reinforcement affect observer’s behavior change?” Bandura con- ceptualizes the learning process with observational learning and imi- tative or non-imitative performance. Based on this concept, Bandura de- fine the roles of vicarious reinforcement in the four steps of ob- servational learning process: attention, retention, motor reproduction, and motivational process. Also, the three effects of vicarious reinforce- ments are explained in the following categories: the observational learn- ing effect, inhibitory or disinhibitory effects, and eliciting effect. Adapting the structure of observational learning theory in terms of the effect of vicarious reinforcement and the function of role models, the second part of this study examines the biblical concept of imitation of Christ and the modeling strategy of discipleship. Especially Paul’s spiri- tual role model serves as positive vicarious reinforcement for the Christian believers to perform the desired behaviors. Also, Paul’s con- demnation serves as explicit negative vicarious reinforcement. Kelly, PhD, Marguerita Lightfoot, PhD, and the National Institute Mental Health Healthy Living Project Team Background: Being a parent, especially a custodial parent, living with HIV was anticipated to increase psychological distress and challenges to self-care. Methods: Mental health symptoms, substance use, and health care utilization were assessed among 3818 HIV-infected adults, including custodial parents, noncustodial parents, and nonparents, in 4 AIDS epicenters. Results: Custodial parents demonstrated significantly poorer medication adherence and attendance at medical appointments but were similar to nonparents and noncustodial parents in mental health symptoms and treatment utilization for mental health and substance use problems. Noncustodial par- ents demonstrated the highest levels of recent substance use and substance abuse treatment. Other markers of risk, such as African American ethnicity, lack of current employment income, and injection drug use moderated many of the apparent psychosocial disadvantages exhibited by parents.
