During one of our walks we passed by the barn and fell in love with it the minute we set eyes on it, and as luck would have it, it was for sale so we decided to sell up and move.” “It was in quite a poor state when we bought it,” says Karl, “and I’d say it took us around two-and-a-half years to completely finish the renovations. We’ve done things like putting in a new kitchen and bathroom, added both a utility room and office, and redecorated throughout. We’ve also updated the exterior and completely redone the garden. The entire house is now absolutely lovely.” “It’s an incredibly spacious house,” says Paula, “but I’d say that the room that we all tend to gravitate to is the living room. It’s absolutely huge and has a log burner at one end so it has a very comfortable and cosy feel. We have a large family, and it’s a room that we can all comfortably fit into. It also has French doors which lead out onto a pretty decked area that has the most wonderful views of the stunning countryside beyond.” “Although the house is wonderfully cosy and warm during the winter, it’s very much a summer house,” continues Paula. “We’re set back from the lane, so it feels very private, and when the weather is warm we like to fling open the doors and really bring the beautiful outdoors in. We sit out on the decking and have BBQs and just soak in our glorious surroundings.” “It’s also a lovely place for children,” adds Karl, “as the house is so open and there’s plenty of space outside; our grandchildren absolutely love it here.” This lovely family home enjoys an idyllic setting surrounded by glorious countryside, and yet everything one could possibly want or need is very close at hand. “It only takes around ten or fifteen minutes to walk into Craven Arms,” says Paula, “and it has a great selection of shops as well as a mainline railway station, but I tend to drive into Church Stretton, which is another lovely little town just a ten minute drive away.” “We’re also very close to Ludlow,” adds Karl, “which is a beautiful town, and one that is famous for having the greatest number of Michelin star restaurants outside London. In fact we’re extremely well placed to get just about anywhere in the Midlands and beyond as the transport links are excellent.” “We have decided that the time is right to downsize. Thursdays 2 – 23 August 2012 From the highest of the high to the lowest of the low, the roles and lives of fascinating folk from the last 600 years will be explored this summer at Stokesay Castle, near Ludlow as part of English Heritage’s Time Travelling Summer at the beautifully preserved fortified manor house! Visitors to the castle on four consecutive Thursdays (from 2 – 23 August inclusive) will have a chance to meet a host of characters pulled from history to share their lives and experiences – from members of the royal family, to those who made their living sifting through the sewers of Victorian London in the hope of finding lost coins or jewellery! The season launches Thursday 2 August, with the Time Travellers Go... Knights and Princesses. Turning back the clock to the Middle Ages, a real medieval knight and a princess will hold court within the castle’s precincts, engaging visitors with tales of chivalry and lessons in knightly etiquette, as well as leading new recruits in mock contests and conflicts, from junior jousting to sword battles! The following Thursday’s (9 August) activities are far less glamorous, as the Time Travellers Go... Gruesome. Visitors will meet with the most unpleasant ‘tosher’ – someone who would have waded through stinking sewers to find lost treasures to make ends meet – and meet Simon the Tudor Sailor for tales of slavery and torture on board an Elizabethan ship! “These jobs might seem a million miles away from our lives today, but they are still evident in the language we use.
