Gavin Webber and Regurgitator Create A
29 October 2009 ARE YOU READY FOR A REAL ROCK SHOW? We’re talking 75 mind-blowing minutes of explosive dance and electrifying rock…Regurgitator live in concert with ground-breaking choreographer Gavin Webber and 5 of Australia’s most powerful contemporary dancers. Opening as a world premier in Toowoomba on November 18, and in Brisbane from 25 November, at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), Rock Show is presented by QPAC as part of Q150 Queensland’s 150th celebrations 2009. Bringing together one of Australia’s most exciting creative talents, Gavin Webber and international rock-electronica band Regurgitator, Rock Show is an assault on the senses - loud, dirty, sexual and playful – as dance, theatre and a rock concert merge into a catharsis of explosive movement, thrashing guitars and keyboards. Regurgitator manager Paul Curtis said: "As a long standing 'rock band' Regurgitator is excited about the upcoming collaboration with Gavin Webber and his exhilarating approach to contemporary dance. "Here is not only another opportunity to step outside the standard live performance scenario of a rock show, but in conjunction with a true genius of dance choreography, question and distort that scenario into askewed artistic realms," Mr Curtis said. Mr Webber said the show was a unique concept. "It is a show that I have wanted to make for a lot of years and now that Regurgitator are involved it's the only thing I can concentrate on," he said. "It is not a theatre show, it is not a dance piece, it is not a rock concert and yet it will be all those things. -
The Girl with Bright Blue Hair FEW Evenings Ago, As a I Waited for a Taxi I Found Myself Standing Next to a Pretty Girl with Bright Blue Hair
The girl with bright blue hair FEW evenings ago, as A I waited for a taxi I found myself standing next to a pretty girl with bright blue hair. (I suppose it was a wig.) Her eyelids had' been painted to match, and there was' even a blue tint to her eyebrows. And I thought—believe it or not- how attractive she looked, and in a] odd way even rather domestic, as though she might at any moment delve into her bag and bring out her knitting. On the following day, I saw a pretty girl with bright grey hair. She was hardly out of her teens. It wasn't a wig; it was her own hair, quite ob right viously dyed and silvered. And she didn*t look in the least attractive, nor, most certainly, domes tic ! She looked dreadful. Like a silly perverse child who had strayed into a world where she did not belong. •n-...:: Ladies^ beware! •^"^ ^HY was the blue right and the grey wrong? I think one can answer that without '*«»."? tying oneself up in psychological knots. The blue was right because it was a ^ fantasy, a fairy story . like dressing up. The grey was wrong because.it was too close to life; it was a grim X, reminder of what was to come. Moral for les Girls? Go on dressing up. ABOUT THE SHOW “I am deeply consumed, I am deeply committed, I am becoming, A Cowboy.” Michael Smith Cowboy is an interactive, solo contemporary-dance work that unpacks one’s ability to have a complete, genuine and meaningful experience as an imagined self. An original sound-score composed by Ben Ely transforms our surroundings into that of a Western Film. “From surfing trains and taming horses to wandering the desert, Cowboy holds a deeper inquiry into the existence of human persona beyond fantasy. By committing entirely to the iconography of a cowboy, I seek to expose desires and vulnerabilities that exist in our pursuit to form identity.” Michael Smith Cowboy utilises its performance space to create both intimate settings and vast, open landscapes with a free-roaming audience. The work is site 'adaptable', tailoring the imagined reality to both indoor and outdoor locations, day or night. Michael operates the show from the inside, using a bluetooth remote to cue tracks and sound effects that transform active audience-members into saloon doors, brawlers, pianists, and other instruments of the Western world. Cowboy is poignantly humorous yet sensitive, where Michael's personal attempt for self-realisation and connection resonates beyond the Cowboy fantasy. A Faint Existence Reviews
The Crossing By Kayah Guenther & Gavin Webber Produced by ABOUT THE SHOW The Crossing explores the desire for self expression from two different artists and the meeting point between them. Both of these artists face challenges that affect their need to communicate. Kayah Guenther is a young man with Down Syndrome who uses dance to show the way he sees the world and the way the world sees him. Kayah has difficulties with his voice but in the mostly non-verbal world of dance he finds a freedom that is denied him in other forms of communication. He wants to show the world he is strong, he is masculine, and he is sexual. He also wants people to know he is vulnerable and “not always happy”. Gavin Webber has been working in contemporary dance for over 25 years but faces the challenges of an ageing body as he nears his 50th Birthday. Dance is considered a young man’s game so what does Gavin’s body still have to say? The Crossing explores the need for self expression and the forms it can take. It also examines a unique bond that exists between these two men and the way it has been forged through the language of dance and improvisation. The work is partly a frank discussion based around Kayah’s determined trajectory in the world of dance where Gavin has acted as his mentor, and partly a physical journey into the intersection of two bodies with different histories, voices and desires. This performance/discussion has been created by Kayah and Gavin together to reflect their common likes as much as their differences. -
