Stephen Harrington Thesis
PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE BEYOND JOURNALISM: INFOTAINMENT, SATIRE AND AUSTRALIAN TELEVISION STEPHEN HARRINGTON BCI(Media&Comm), BCI(Hons)(MediaSt) Submitted April, 2009 For the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Creative Industries Faculty Queensland University of Technology, Australia 1 2 STATEMENT OF ORIGINAL AUTHORSHIP The work contained in this thesis has not been previously submitted to meet requirements for an award at this or any other higher education institution. To the best of my knowledge and belief, the thesis contains no material previously published or written by another person, except where due reference is made. _____________________________________________ Stephen Matthew Harrington Date: 3 4 ABSTRACT This thesis examines the changing relationships between television, politics, audiences and the public sphere. Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production. -
Ciaran Gribbin
Ciaran Gribbin Ciaran Gribbin is a Grammy nominated songwriter and performer who, in addition to working with word class artists such as Madonna, U2, Paul McCartney, Snow Patrol and Al Pacino, has toured the world as the singer of INXS. Ciaran was born in war-torn Northern Ireland growing up in ‘The Troubles’. As a young musician he cut his teeth doing gig after gig in the tough bars of Belfast and Derry. During this turbulent time in a divided society, Ciaran witnessed and experienced the bombs and bullets of sectarian abuse and paramilitary attacks. Ciaran’s first big break came in 2010 when he received a Grammy nomination for Madonna’s worldwide hit single ‘Celebration’, which he co-wrote with Madonna and Oakenfold. Since then, in addition to performing at many music festivals including Brazil’s ‘Rock in Rio’, Ciaran has opened shows for Paul McCartney, Crowded House, The Script and Gotye. Ciaran has worked extensively as a songwriter for acts such as Groove Armada and Dead Mau5. He has also worked on multiple movie soundtracks including writing all of the original songs for the U2 supported movie ‘Killing Bono’. This movie was released through Paramount Pictures with a Sony Music soundtrack album. In 2011 Ciaran became the singer of the legendary Australian band INXS. He has toured extensively with INXS throughout South America, Europe and Australasia. 2015 ended with an Oscar shortlist nomination for Ciaran’s song 'Hey Baby Doll' which was sung by Al Pacino in the critically acclaimed movie 'Danny Collins'. “Ciaran has one of the most Ciaran is the founder of Rock and Roll Team Building and extraordinary voices I’ve heard in along with original INXS member, Garry Beers, is a founding member of the super-group ‘Stadium’ who are based in Los a long time.” Angeles. -

Kate Ceberano stages mini I’m Talking reunion while curating a new festival in Daylesford Cameron Adams, National music writer, Herald Sun August 27, 2018 2:22pm KATE Ceberano is staging a mini reunion of her band I’m Talking later this year. Ceberano is a co-curator of the Live. Love. Life festival in Daylesford from November 14 to 18. The event will see Ceberano and Zan Abeyrante performing I’m Talking songs with local dance band Sex on Toast. “Zan and I haven’t sung together in 30 years, so it’s going to be ace,” Ceberano said. “It’s just a little pop-up show, we’ll do a few tunes and dance our brains out. Zan and I have reconnected since the reissue of (I’m Talking’s 1986 album) Bear Witness a few months ago. This could lead to some I’m Talking shows, we’ll see.” Kate Ceberano poses in front of a David Bromley painting. Picture: Jake Nowakowski The Live. Love. Life festival will focus on music, art, culture and wellness, with Ceberano working on the project all year with the likes of artist David Bromley, a co-curator of the event. “People are escaping to Daylesford because they’re looking to an alternative way to escape the future,” Ceberano said. “Daylesford is facing the future using every single ounce of knowledge in the history of food, culture and wellness. There’s no other place like it in Australia as far as I’m concerned.” Ceberano has curated a string of musical guests including Katie Noonan, Deborah Conway, Vika and Linda Bull, Lior, Paul Grabowsky and more. -

Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award!
MEDIA RELEASE 28 November 2018 Mt. Gambier Local Wins 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award! Scott Maxwell from Grant High School in Mount Gambier is the winner of the 2018 ARIA Music Teacher of the Year. The win was announced at the star-studded ARIA Awards, held at The Star in Sydney. The ARIA Music Teacher of the Year Award is run in partnership with leading arts education organisation, The Song Room and sponsored by Telstra. It’s been a wild ride for Scott, who was selected from hundreds of submissions. His inclusion as an official ARIA Nominee was celebrated with a surprise visit by Guy Sebastian, who made the trip to Grant High School in October and sang his hit song Battle Scars with students from the music program. Since then, four nominees from across Australia have been put to a public vote, with tens of thousands from around the country showing their support for their favourite music educator. ‘Maxi’ as he is affectionately known, has transformed the music program at Grant High since he took over in 2009. There are now double the amount of music programs offered at the school, and triple the number of students enrolled in the music program. Scott’s success is attributed to his aspiration to make as many music genres accessible as possible, to adapting his teaching to suit the needs of his students, and to placing an emphasis on creating opportunities for public performances. His approach has seen the cohort at Grant High School thrive. What started as small live shows in the school canteen at lunch time, has quickly grown to full community festivals for students to perform under Scott’s guidance.
