Edgeworth was an innovative writer of nu- merous tales and novellas for children and young people, whose work was enjoyed by generations of juvenile readers from the late eighteenth until the early twentieth century. She was also the author of Practical Education (1798), an important manual on early education that broke away from the speculative approach of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the class-specificity of John Locke (both of whom focused their efforts on the education of boys) to create an experimental, scientific pedagogy, based on observa- tions and anecdotes drawn from the experience of bringing up real girls and boys (eight of her half-siblings from her father’s third marriage).1 Edgeworth’s prolific writing for and about children was grounded in a sympathy for young people strengthened by her own turmoil in early childhood: she lost her mother when she was five years old, and her father (a virtual stranger to her) remar- ried within a few months. -

CARDIFF CORVEY: READING THE ROMANTIC TEXT Archived Articles Issue 4, No 2 —————————— SOME PRELIMINARY REMARKS ON THE PRODUCTION AND RECEPTION OF FICTION RELATING TO IRELAND, 1800–1829 —————————— Jacqueline Belanger JACQUELINE BELANGER FICTION RELATING TO IRELAND, 1800–29 I IN 1829, just after Catholic Emancipation had been granted, Lady Morgan wrote: ‘Among the Multitudinous effects of Catholic emancipation, I do not hesitate to predict a change in the character of Irish authorship’.1 Morgan was quite right to predict a change in ‘Irish authorship’ after the eventful date of 1829, not least because, in the first and most obvious instance, one of the foremost subjects to have occupied the attentions of Irish authors in the first three decades of the early nineteenth century— Catholic Emancipation—was no longer such a central issue and attention was to shift instead to issues revolving around parliamentary independence from Britain. However, while important changes did occur after 1829, it could also be argued that the nature of ‘Irish authorship’—and in particular authorship of fiction relating to Ireland—was altering rapidly throughout the 1820s. It was not only the case that the number of novels representing Ireland in some form increased over the course of the 1820s, but it also appears that publishing of this type of fiction came to be dominated by male authors, a trend that might be seen to relate both to general shifts in the pattern for fiction of this time and to specific conditions in British expectations of fiction that sought to represent Ireland. It is in order to assess and explore some of the trends in the production and reception of fiction relating to Ireland during the period 1800–29 that this essay provides a bibliography of those novels with significant Irish aspects. -

Public and Private Meanings in Maria Edgeworth’s Patronage Claire Connolly Announcing her intention to write ‘a big book about England’, Madame de Staël asked Lord Byron his opinion of Maria Edgeworth’s novel Patronage. The conversation occurred in March 1814, just a few months following the novel was first published, at a dinner hosted by the poet and patron Samuel Rogers. Byron responded (in his own account of the evening) by saying that he thought it ‘very bad for her, and worse than any of the others.’i -

A Biographical Note Maria Edgeworth was the third child and eldest daughter of Richard Lovell Edgeworth (1744-1817) and his first wife, Anna Maria Elers (1743-1777). Richard Lovell Edgeworth was an Anglo-Irish politician, writer and inventor and a leading light of the Birmingham Lunar Society (founded in the 1770s). Maria was born at Black Bourton, Oxfordshire on 1 January 1768. Her mother died of puerperal fever following the birth of a fifth child in March 1773 and her father swiftly remarried only three months later to Honora Sneyd of Lichfield (1751-1780). Maria went with her surviving brother and two sisters to live with her father at the family estate at Edgeworthstown, County Longford briefly before she was sent away to a boarding school in England. She returned to Edgeworthstown in the summer of 1782 by which time her stepmother had died (1780) and her father married again, this time to Elizabeth Sneyd, the sister of his late wife. Maria now formed a strong bond with her father and participated in educating his ever growing family of children as well as managing the estate. Her first published works were Letters for Literary Ladies in 1795 ? which made a vigorous case for female rationality and skills as writers and a collection of children?s stories (The Parent?s Assistant, 1796, but it was Practical Education of 1798, co-authored with her father, that propelled Maria Edgeworth to international fame. -

Eighteenth Century Fiction, 22 (1):115-130. Abstract One of the earliest novels set in Ireland to achieve popular and critical acclaim was Maria Edgeworth‟s Castle Rackrent (1800). It is reported that King George III got great entertainment in reading this short novel, which relates the rambunctious genealogy of the various squires who were lords of Castle Rackrent as narrated by the family retainer, Thady Quirk. The delighted King is said to have declared: „I know something now of my Irish subjects‟. It is this issue of knowing, specifically knowing the Irish subject that is the focus of this article, and the argument is made that knowledge and the processes of identification in the novel are ultimately made unintelligible by the gap between the different standards and practices of oral and literary cultures.
