I relate various tribal reactions to the tragedy of cultural genocide as experienced by those indigenous groups within the "Black Hole" of Southwest Oregon. My desire is to provide an "inside" (ernie) perspective on the history and cultural changes of Southwest Oregon. I explain Native responses to living primarily in a non-Indian world, after the nearly total loss of aboriginal Coquelle culture and tribal identity through v decimation by disease, warfare, extermination, and cultural genocide through the educational policies of the Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. -

The ORE BIN Volume 24, No.8 August, 1962 GEOLOGY OF THE CAPE BLANCO AREA, SOUTHWEST OREGON By R. H. Dott, Jr. * Introduction Cape Blanco, the most westerly headland in Oregon, encompasses some critical geological relationships important to the understanding of the western Klamath-Siskiyou region. The cape was named by 16th century Spanish sailors, as were many other Oregon headlands such as Cape Se bastian and Cape Ferrelo. Figure 1 shows the location of the Cape Blanco area, which includes also Blacklock Point, lying 3 miles to the northeast within the undeveloped Newburgh State Park. Cape Blanco and Blacklock Point lie along the northwest landward end of a great sheared zone which is at least one mile wide. Though Ce nozoic deposits mask most of the region to the east and south, the zone is considered co-extensive with the previously named Port Orford shear zone exposed 8 miles southeast of the cape (Koch and others, 1961). This is one of a series of such zones which lace the southwest Oregon coast just as they do in the northern California Coast Ranges (figure 1). The bedrock types and ages exposed in the area are extremely varied, ranging from the Dothan? Formation of uncertain but presumably Jurassic age to extensive Cenozoic deposits. Particularly noteworthy is the rec ognition of Late Cretaceous strata north of Blacklock Point (Koch and others, 1961). These, together with the Dothan? Formation and rocks in Cape Blanco, were all mapped as the "Myrtle formation" by Diller (1903). Only those in Cape Blanco are here regarded as representing true equiv alents of the Myrtle Group as defined by Imlay and others (1959). -

In Oregon, DOGAMI manages the and the Alaska Maximum. All tsunami simulations were run assuming National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, which has been that prevailing tide was static (no flow) and equal to Mean Higher High administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Water (MHHW) tide; MHHW is defined as the average height of the Administration (NOAA) since 1995. Riding on the leading edge of the moving North American plate, Oregon reflects the underlying mecha- nism of the plate collision boundary in virtually all aspects of its geology. In the seven years since the fourth edition was written, an irregular but continuing drumbeat of earthquakes reminds us of the forces beneath our feet and the need to prepare for catastrophic changes be they quakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, floods, or massive earth movements. Most profound is the discovery of irrefutable evidence that these catastrophes have been visited on the state quite regularly over the past few thousands of years as well as the absolute surety that similar disasters will oc- cur in the near and distant future. -
