Longitudinally veined with 3 or 5 veins, obscure on both surfaces. White tomentose or scurfy on leaf surfaces with an indumentum of very small, obscure, more or less stellate scales/hairs, becoming sparse with age. Flowers Inflorescences axillary, flowers in umbel-like triads (groups of 3). Central flower sessile and lateral flowers stalked; pedicels 1-3 mm long. Flowers bisexual, actinomorphic, 5-merous. Calyx cupular about 1 mm long, entire without any lobing. Petals 5, free or shortly fused at base, becoming recurved at anthesis, 1.5-3 cm long, green, maroon to red tinged, with a short whit tomentum. Flowers in triads. Declared Weeds in the Northern Territory A weed is broadly considered to be a plant that requires some form of action to reduce its negative effects on the economy, the environment and human health or amenity (Australian Weed Strategy 2017-27). Some weeds are declared and have legislative controls in place to assist with reducing their impacts. In the Northern Territory, a declared weed is a species of plant identified for eradication, control, or prevention of entry in all or part of the Territory under section 7 of the Northern Territory Weeds Management Act 2001 (the Act). The general duties and specific requirements relating to declared weeds are described in section 9 of the Act. Weed management plans apply to some declared weeds under section 10 of the Act and describe additional legal requirements for these species. A person may apply for a permit to use a declared weed under section 30 of the Act. New declarations, and the area to which they apply, are published in the Northern Territory Government Gazette. A weed may be declared as: Class A To be eradicated Class B Growth and spread to be prevented Class C Not to be introduced to the Territory All Class A and Class B weeds are also considered to be Class C weeds. The lists of weeds below are currently declared in the Northern Territory. The last change to the declared list occurred on 20 December 2017. The objectives of this study paper were (1) evaluate the growth, biomass and survival of different woody plant species established through direct seeding in a semi-arid degraded land; (2) identify woody plant species that could be further used for restoration of degraded lands. To achieve the objectives eight woody plant species seeds were gathered, their seeds were sown in a degraded land, in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) (n=4). Data on germination, growth and survival of the different woody plants were collected at regular intervals during an eleven-month period. At the end of the study period, the remaining woody plants' dry biomasses were assessed. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used for the data analysis and mean separation was performed using Fisher’s least significant difference (LSD) test (p=0.05). The result revealed significant differences on the mean heights, root length, root collar diameters, root to shoot ratio, dry root biomasses and dry shoot biomasses of the different species (p < 0.05). -
