Dr. Mahfouz has visited me and brought with him the suggested Sunday school curriculum for the land of immigration. I have studied with him the basic topics of the curriculum without getting into details. Although that I have pointed out some concerns on the doctrine and dogma curriculum, it is clear that the amount of work spent on preparing the curriculum is huge and worth thanking. Nonetheless, the Bible study part of the curriculum needs to be increased. God willing, I will also send you additional details on this curriculum. May the Lord bless all the effort that our son Mahfouz has done in preparing the Sunday school curriculum, in collecting the relevant topics, and in performing the translation of subjects. May the Lord also bless all those who have joined him in preparing this project and those who revised the topics. Let our goal be performing our best to try and arrive at perfection given what we have from abilities. Lastly, I would also suggest the addition of different recognized pictures according to our doctrine, dogma and history to the Sunday school curriculum. May the Lord be with you. Be in peace.     Arab-West Report, May 26, 2014 St. Demiana’s Monastery: an oasis of spirituality Author: Weston Bland Photos: Weston Bland On Friday, May 16, as part of a group of diverse national and religious background, I had the opportunity to attend the moulid, or festival, of St. Demiana [Dimyana] at her namesake monastery in the villaGe of Demiana in the district Barrary-Belqas in the Egyptian Delta. In general, the trip, orGanized by the Center for Arab-West Understanding, provided a fascinatinG look into the dynamics of a popular reliGious celebration, as well as into the lives of the nuns that live and work on the grounds of the monastery. St. Demiana’s festival is a popular Christian celebration that attracts larGe numbers of visitors every year. Traditionally, the celebrations include activities both within the monastery complex, as well as on the Grounds surroundinG the complex. This year however, the outside celebrations were significantly scaled back due to security concerns; these concerns were underscored by the heavy security presence we encountered at the perimeter of the festival Grounds upon arrivinG. Ultimately though, such concerns seemed to have had little effect in deterring the significant crowds of the faithful that still turned out for the celebration. In the front of the hall, our group was given a brief audience with Metropolitan Bishoy, the Orthodox Metropolitan for Damietta, Kafr al-Sheikh, and the abbot of the monastery.

Each participant was required to present a piece of art using paper either by drawing, making shapes or using paper mache. Fady enjoyed making paper shapes so he was very excited to participate. Fady decided to make a model of a city using paper. He dreamed of living in a perfect city. He wanted to call it “The City of Virtues”. Because Fady’s dad was an architect, he helped him draw a plan for the city. Fady started to follow exactly what was on the drawing his dad made. Two weeks later, Fady completed his model for “The City of Virtues.” The highlights of his city included: the Virtues Street, the Values Island, the River of Life, the Paradise of Saints, the Tree of Love and the Tree of Peace. At the centre of the city there was a High Tower where the Wiseman lived.

Cairo‘s Tahrir Square and the Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church (KDEC) continued to be the principle focal points up to and including the June 30 uprising some three years later. During this period of massive change in the history of Egypt, the Coptic church realized the need for political action in the face of persecution, and Kasr Dobara Evangelical Church was a focal example of leadership and service in this new Christian activism. For the first time in the history of Christianity in Egypt, Christians ventured out of the sanctuary of their churches to protest against the traditional oppression of government. Last year, in addition to the usual participation from Egypt and Sudan, we had a great worldwide participation from 192 Churches representing more than 20 countries and 8 languages. Ramzy A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Music, University of Toronto 2014 This dissertation explores Coptic Orthodox political (dis)engagement through song, particularly as it is expressed through the colloquial Arabic genre of taratil. Through ethnographic and archival research, I assess the genre's recurring tropes of martyrdom, sacrifice, willful withdrawal, and death as emerging markers of community legitimacy and agency in Egypt's political landscape before and following the January 25th uprising in 2011. Specifically, I explore how Copts actively perform as well as sing a pious and modern citizenry through negations of death and a heavenly afterlife. How do they navigate the convergences and contradictions of belonging to a nation as minority Christian citizens among a Muslim majority while feeling that they have little real civic agency? Through a number of case studies, I trace the discursive logics of “modernizing” religion into easily tangible practices of belonging to possess a heavenly as well as an earthly nation. I begin with Sunday Schools in the predominately Christian and middle-class neighborhood of Shubra where educators made the poetry of the late Coptic Patriarch, Pope Shenouda III, into taratil and drew on their potentials of death and withdrawal to reform a Christian moral interiority and to teach a modern and pious Coptic citizenry.
