    Celebrating the Centennial of Naval Aviation in 1/72 Scale 2010 USN/USMC/USCG 1/72 Aircraft Kit Survey J. Michael McMurtrey IPMS-USA 1746 Carrollton, TX [email protected] As 2011 marks the centennial of U.S. naval aviation, aircraft modelers might be interested in this list of US naval aircraft — including those of the Marines and Coast Guard, as well as captured enemy aircraft tested by the US Navy — which are available as 1/72 scale kits. Why 1/72? There are far more kits of naval aircraft available in this scale than any other. Plus, it’s my favorite, in spite of advancing age and weakening eyes. This is an updated version of an article I prepared for the 75th Anniversary of US naval aviation and which was published in a 1986 issue of the old IPMS-USA Update. It’s amazing to compare the two and realize what developments have occurred, both in naval aeronautical technology and the scale modeling hobby, but especially the latter. My 1986 list included 168 specific aircraft types available in kit form from thirty- three manufacturers — some injected, some vacuum-formed — and only three conversion kits and no resin kits. Many of these names (Classic Plane, Contrails, Eagle’s Talon, Esci, Ertl, Formaplane, Frog, Griffin, Hawk, Matchbox, Monogram, Rareplane, Veeday, Victor 66) are no longer with us or have been absorbed by others. This update lists 345 aircraft types (including the original 168) from 192 different companies (including the original 33), many of which, especially the producers of resin kits, were not in existence in 1986, and some of which were unknown to me at the time.

    CONTRIBUTORS Dr. John D. Anderson, Jr. joined the U.S. Naval Ordnance Laboratory in 1966 as Chief of the Hypersonic Group. In 1973, he became Chainnan of the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland, and since 1980 has been a professor of Aerospace Engineering at Maryland. Dr. Anderson works with the Air and Space Museum one day each week as their Special Assistant for Aerodynamics. In addition, in 1993 he was made a full faculty member of the Committee for the History and Philosophy of Science, and in 1995 an affiliate faculty member of the Department of History at the University of Maryland. Dr. Anderson has published seven books and over 120 technical papers. Dr. Anderson is a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. From 1988 to 1992, he served as Vice President of the AIAA for Education, and from 1997 to the present as the AIAA Vice President for Publications. In 1989, he was given the John Leland Atwood Award jointly by the AIAA and the ASEE "for the lasting influence of his recent contributions to aerospace engineering education." In 1995, he was given the AIAA Pendray Award for aerospace literature. Roger E. Biistein teaches courses in the history of technology, recent America, and aerospace history at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, a suburban campus for juniors, seniors, and graduate students. He is the author of several books on aviation and space flight, including The American Aerospace Industry: From Workshop to Global Enterprise (1996). I am guessing that much of your British readership is of a vintage to remember the gentleman. As I recall the flight pattern of this model was in the duck and cover class, definitely an adrenalin generating experience, but there again I would hope my trimming has improved a bit since I built this so it may have been more my lack of trimming experience than the model. There are, however, several structural differences which make it most interesting from an engineering point of view. As with the "Mai1p1ane, it is a two-bay biplano with two engines mounted highup between the wings direct- ly above the widely spread wheels of the landing gear. The engines, which are two Armstrong Siddeley Jaguar VIA's,-.-are mounted on built-up dura.lumin ring-type mount- ings slung from the under side' of the top wings by st.eel tubes and built-up girders, and cowled with Townend ring- form cowlings. These mountings coincide with the inner interplane struts and the points at which each separate half of the landing gear is attached beneath the lower wings (figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4). The sketches (fig. 5) explain the construction of the landing gear, and from the photographs it can be seen how neatly each half is faired in. The Dunlop wheels, which have Dunlop brakes, are carried between oleo-pneumatic shock-absorbing legs. The fairings are detachable and are fabric-covered structures of spruce, light stringers being bent around formers to carry the fabric. This system of building up fairings has been used for a number of other places on the airplane, notably under and above the fuse- lage, between the wings, and around the nose of the fuse- lage, their detachability being a useful feature.

This specification called for a two-seat all-metal land-plane with one or more engines, to have a mail capac- ity of 1,000 pounds, and range of 1,000 miles at a cruis- ing speed of at least 150 miles per hour in still air. The P.64 is a two-engine tractor biplane which has been designed to give the specified normal speed with each engine throttled- down to approximately half its output. Under these conditions the engines should have an exceed- ingly long life and a singular freedom from breakdown. Should one engine fail the P.64 will still be capable of flying level at 4,000 feet at 85 miles per hour, With the remaining engine throttled- to 1,950 r.p.m. This should give the nearest approach to absolute immunity from forced landing owing to engine failure that is at present available.     308 Chapter 3: The Design Revolution Document 3-15(a-e) 309 INTO THE NacELLE The problem becomes easiest when there are outboard engine nacelles, for the nacelle usually provides ample space for housing the gear and gives the proper tread with the wheels located under the concenetrated loads On a high wing monoplane design with engines in the leading edge, the landing gear must be very high Because of the great height it is almost impossible to take the side loads as a cantilever, and therefore the design must be complicated by side struts to the fuselage as on the General YO-27 (see illustration) where they remain out in the air-stream when the wheel is retracted In the new Dutch built Fokker F-XX a compromise apparently has been reached by retaining the high wing and lowering the engine nacelles below the wing so that a completely retractable gear can be obtained with no side struts to the fuselage, the nacelles carrying all the load Fokker seems to have decided that the slightly increased drag of the lowered nacelles did not offset the advantages of the high wing, with its inherently less drag and greater lift as well as its absence of buffeting and better passenger vision (see page 59 and references 3, 4 and 5) How- ever, some designers have reached a compromise in another fashion, locating the nacelle in the best position with reference to the landing gear and then lowering the wing to have the engine in the leading edge Examples of this are the new Martin bomber, the Boeing bomber and the new Boeing transport, and the new Douglas
