the Telltale

2015 Easter Regatta Special thanks to everyone that made this year’s Easter Regatta a success. Sail Club showed up once again to put on an outstanding event. Even mother nature pitched in with some great weather and most importantly...wind! Below are photos from that weekend.

At The Helm Commodore J.C. Moore

The Easter regatta has come and gone, and most folks will remember it

as a great affair. What was not to like? decided to grace us

with some of their best work for all three days – almost unheard of! But

before the race committees could work their , a many members and

spouses put in a lot of work to make it look effortless. Spring Work Day

turned into two days with crews coming early and staying late. All of

that hard work showed inside and out. The Auxiliary and their helpers

added the special touches around the clubhouse and laid on the food. The crews could not believe the quality and quantity of the meals. The crane work, the parking – everything that goes on just below the surface went beautifully. Many thanks go out to everyone that contributed to the effort.

As every youngster will tell you, the regatta is just a nice way to get ready for the Easter Egg Hunt with the special visit for Mr. Bunny. The kids really had a good time which is what it is all about. During story time, one little guy kept nudging his friend and whispering, “It’s Mr. Bunny! It’s really Mr. Bunny!”

Thanks go to the commodore’s wife and her group of volunteers for a great Easter Egg Hunt.

May 2 is the Past Commodores / Past Presidents Party. A terrific way to honor those who have served before. Please RSVP. If you have not gotten your invitation, please let me know.

CSC Auxiliary News President Diana Wrisley

Notice how quickly we forgot the bitter cold snaps of winter when Spring sprang into action! And, as almost always is the case, CSC produced plenty of breeze for its famous Easter Regatta on Lake Murray. And your loyal CSCA was ashore working its magic to feed and entertain. The auxiliary helped with serving breakfast each morning and served its awesome Burger Lunch on Sunday. And the packed weekend did not end ‘til trophies were awarded and the children waited in anticipation of the appearance of a giant Easter Bunny. Would he make it again this year? He did! Right on cue. And lots of helpful folks pitched in to make the weekend unfold successfully, including Kim Milling, Marybeth Mahrer, Elizabeth Selkinghaus, Dan Clayton, Lee Bell, Pat & Bill Freeman, Dupre Young, Karen Brooks, Rebecca Dotterer, Joan and Scott Leamy, Rick McGill and ALL who helped in every way, from food preparation, cooking, serving and clean-up, to help make the regatta’s hosting duties so successful. Teamwork like this keeps ‘em coming back for more. Although we did not have a Ladies Night Out in March, CSCA was not idle. We planned for the Easter Regatta and other projects. Also, CSCA’s March 27th Friday Food and Fun Night Potato Bar was a smashing success. Many thanks to Pat and Bill Freemen, Elizabeth and George Selkinghaus, Rebecca and John Dotterer, Nan Nussler, and David Wrisley for making it such a fun evening. Our April meeting was well attended and focused on continued support for Sistercare. Donations throughout the year are requested as the need runs non-stop. Special thanks to Nan Nussler and Kris Kenline for their hard work at the Ship’s Store, which was open several times during the Easter Regatta featuring new items for all ages. Mark your calendars – May 2nd. Planning is underway for the upcoming Commodores/Past Presidents Party. We need help preparing for this event, so if you didn’t make April’s meeting to sign-up, you may be getting a call from us. This is a special party where we honor those who have served as CSC Commodores and CSCA Presidents, so please mark your calendar and plan to attend. It’s always a fine party! Many thanks to Redick Loring and Donna Rone for the delicious and nutritious meal served at April’s meeting. Our next meeting is May 12th with dinner served at 6:30pm by Alecia Milling and Candace Leaphart. The meeting follows at 7:00pm.

Hope to see you soon!

As I write this article just a few days after the Easter Regatta, I am in awe of the efforts of our club members who made this regatta a success. Many of you spent the entire Easter weekend at the club and on the water to support our first major event of the year. Alex Bolan, the regatta chairman, deserves special recognition. In his second year in this role, Alex increased the number of boats entered and provided excellent food and entertainment to ensure that our guests had a memorable time. His organizational skills and ability to rally his fellow sailors to host a first class regatta is impressive. We should all take great comfort that the future of our sport is in good hands with young men like him. Of course, I can’t go without praising the efforts of Dick Dommel, the regatta PRO. He assembled a strong team of race officers and race committee volunteers who ran excellent races and gave the competitors a full dose of sailing over the weekend. It is what we have come to expect from the Admiral, and he always delivers. Now it is time to move on to our next sailing events. We have some time to get rested and prepared for the full slate of summer activities. The Thursday night dinghy races begin June 4 and continue into August. The first week of Youth Sailing Camp follows on June 8 and the second week wraps up on June 19. Finally, the U.S. Junior Women’s Doublehanded Championship begins on June 25. What a month! The work to plan and host the sailing events for the year at our club is a marathon. Through the dedication and perseverance of our club members, all of our sailing events are sure to reach the level of excellence achieved for the Easter Regatta.

See you at the finish line!

She also served on the race committee in March 2014. Jeff and Lindsey have one son, Jones, who will be one year old this August.

Something New... We have taken steps towards digitizing our membership application. Now it can be filled in from a computer. All required steps in the membership process remain the same. And all required signatures still need to be gathered. The intent is to make information on the form more legible. So with this little bit of streamlining of the process, I ask each of you to keep an eye out at work, in your professional organizations, at church, or in other circles of interest for folks you feel would be a good fit for our club. And most importantly, if you do plan to bring someone you’d like to propose to the club, please let me know and I will make either myself and/or someone else on the membership committee is available to meet as well.

As a reminder, this year’s membership committee members are: Charles Bumgardner, Harry Davis, Jim Edwards, Stanley Hassinger, Brion Kenline, Steve Szymanski, II & Andrew Clarkson.

Stay tuned... There are also other great candidates in the pipe. If anyone questions or needs a membership application, please contact Andrew Clarkson, [email protected].

CSC Flashback John Wrisley 55 Years ago...

Some 90 people attended the club’s first party at its very own site in late March. Apologies were made for the unpainted interior walls and curtains not yet hung. The bar and galley area awaited finishing but Phil McLain, Jack Elliott and House Committee members rushed installation of sinks, lights, and other necessary touches for the party. . . $3.50 was charged for the lobster/oyster/salad meal and the ticket seller reported that several members, including Martin Jones, Sr. and George Sumner, paid $4.00 and left their change on the table. A $100.00 profit was turned over to the club Treasury. The April, 1960, newsletter published a membership roster containing the forty-eight members’ names and addresses. Details of new member recruitment were reported and the club’s revised member applications had been printed and were available upon request. Eight member clubs of the South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association published their schedules; CSC would host its open regatta May 21-22 with some forty out-of-town boats expected. It would be the first big regatta hosted by CSC at its own property. WIS-TV promised to assign a film crew to attend the May Midlands Regatta and other media also voiced interest in the event. Variety show host Johnny Evans (WIS- TV) invited the club to bring a boat to the station’s parking lot where it would serve as background for one of his programs. George R.P. Walker, Jr. was nearing completion of restoration of an E Scow. Bob Webster was about to re-canvas the deck of his Hampton and paint the hull. Members were busily rushing repairs in anticipation of Regatta Weekend.

Upcoming Sailing Seminars Andrew Clarkson

Intro to Race Committee Management On Friday evening, April 24th @ 7:30 pm Dick Dommell will present an “Intro to Race Committee Management.” This seminar is directed towards volunteers who want to know what it takes to contribute as an effective RC to ensure safe and competitive competition for local and visiting sailors. Also, knowledge of RC actions will make seminar attendees better competitors. Experienced volunteers are encouraged to attend as a review. Make your plans to meet inside the Club house 6:30 pm sharp – earlier if happy hour beforehand sounds enticing.

USCGA Vessel Inspections On Saturday May 9th, make plans to meet with members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to have your sailboat or powerboat inspected and receive 2015 USCG Vessel Inspection stickers. We plan to get started at 10am and run through 2pm. Trailered boats should queue up in the back circle. Boats on the water can be inspected at the designated front dock. I’m grateful to Mark Alexander for being us this idea forward and for his assist in making it happen.

Columbia Sailing Club - June 25-30, 2015 for the Ida Lewis Trophy

This US Sailing National Championship will be sailed by young women, ages 13-18 from all over the United States.

Once again U. S. Sailing has selected the Columbia Sailing Club to host another national event. On June 25th we’ll have 80 competitors arrive at our Club. Prior to their arrival we’ll be receiving 40 boats. The competitors are young women aged 13 to 18 and they’re coming from all over the US. There are also a dozen adult officials that will be joining us. This event will last from June 25th until July 1st. Jan Jernigan and Robert Key have put together an outstanding agenda for this competition and are asking you to join them. Host Families Needed These sailors need families to be their hosts. The plan is to keep a crew of two together in a home. However, if you can keep more than one crew it would be great. We realize that this is a sizable commitment. But think of the memories these guests will have of not only the competition but also the hospitality of CSC members. If you can be a host family for either the young girls or the adults please contact the following folks: Sarah Weiss: 803 260 4384 [email protected] Rose Wilkins: 803 359 2077 [email protected] Charlie Calhoun: 803 446 4099 [email protected]
